I prayed that it wouldn't happen to me as I LOVE running in these shoes, but, alas, the uppers are blowing out where the protective layer ends on the outside edge of both shoes. Im going to try strengthening that spot with a thin layer of rubber and apoxy on the 2 pairs I have waiting in the wings.

This is the first pair of Altra shoes that I have ever purchased. I bought the Timp 4 with the idea of using them both on treadmill and on trail. They have felt really good on the treadmill and walking on pavement. This weekend I was able to get on my first trail with them. A 5 mile trail hike. The trail really cut up the outer mesh on these and my new shoes that have less than 15 total miles now look like they are an old everyday pair. I do like how these feel and grip but really wish they would have held up better, especially for the price. Will consider another pair of Altra in the future just not this model.

I had my feet measured in a running store before buying these online - my right foot is an 11 and my left is 11.5. I bought these shoes in 11.5 and my left shoe is too short and too narrow. My foot is smashed in the shoe.

Primarily bought these because of the wide toe box which is great. The problem is they breakdown fast. I have owned them for about 13 months and used approximately 60 miles. The tread wears fast (90% trail use) and the mesh uppers started fraying quickly and on my hike yesterday the upper completely blew out into an inch wide hole.

Typically able to get through a season with one pair of Timps; however, after buying these in late November and alternating with other shoes, the sides on both totally ripped.

This is my 4th pair of Timp's over the years - I had the 1.5's and a couple pairs of the 3's. I use them for light trailing, some walking and casual - they are comfortable. The Timp 4's have been quite disappointing. Narrower toe box, the material covering the midsole (new to timp) gets destroyed and stained and the outsole is gone after just 8 month of light use. I'm not a runner. I still have my 3's with more outsole than my 8 month old 4's. I think the Timp is no longer a good shoe

The timp 4 has disappointed me. Being that I was a hardcore timp 3 lover I was super excited to try these, but even looking at them it feels like ALTRA is selling out and trying to fit into the stereotypical shoe mold, which is something I loved that they weren't! I don't understand the holes by the midsole and don't think it adds anything. I already have blow out on the edges after not hard use. Lastly the tongue is not comfortable as it rubs on your ankle area and the tuck in for the laces is lacking. I really really hope ALTRA goes back to the timp 3 design framework instead of continuing this. I LOVED this show and it was my best cringe, but the 4 has left me sad to see those others gone instead of excited for more adventure.

I've used and followed Altra for years. I typically try to buy the ones they still put Vibram soles on. But, I tried these for
Comfort and easy hiking. Soles worn off in less than 150 miles. Don't waste your time with these shoes until Altra can figure out a way to dial in comfort with a shoe that lasts more than 150 miles. Please go back to the drawing board, and engineer a better sole.

The shoes were too short for my feet. Also, the tongue is plastic so the edge is sharp (funny they chose this material) instead of something soft.

I am a first time Altra customer so I did a bit of research before I bought these shoes. I noticed some folks had issues with the durability of the shoe but I figured I would not use the shoes as strenuously as some of these more avid runners so I would be fine. I went to a local store so I could try them on and make sure the fit was correct. The next day I went on one neighbor trail run, nothing crazy with roots or large rocks. I enjoyed the feel of the shoe; however, when I went to take the shoes off I noticed the side of the shoe was starting to come apart and fray. I sent the warranty team an email with pictures of the problem and a picture of my recipe showing I bought them the day before. They qualified the shoe starting to fall apart after one run as "wear and tear" and not under warranty. New shoe company here I come. So much for buy local, get good customer support.

I am a long time Timp fan from the first generation through to this shoe. Warranty took care of issues with the Timp 3 I had (peeling outer layer after one run (10 miles). Unfortunately, the replacement Timp 4 here is now showing a tear inside on the heel after a few miles walking/breaking in. Only shoe I had brought for the destination trip, so on I went through 25 miles of the hike through the Grand Canyon (Rim to Rim). The tongue design was questionable when I first got them and with short socks started rubbing at the top of both ankles. Pulled up socks some but still left red marks and would have started to get worse if I took these through any more miles (used KT tape as protection too). Hope to try another Altra shoe as they have always been my go to. I shipped them back as Altra has been great about warranty issues and like/don't like. A few days past the 30 days so hoping I'm still taken care of.

The fit and comfort of these shoes were excellent. Every other trip to the woods, I swapped them with some Hoka SpeedGoats to decide which pair of shoes I'm taking with me on a multi-day App Trail hike in SW VA next month. The shoes were purchased them in mid-June 2022 and when I stopped wearing the Timps I covered about 150 miles. I noticed that the bottom of the sole was pealing back in the exact same place on both shoes (see pics).
Same trails, same person, same distance. The Hokas are in great shape. The Altras are not. I'm sorry to say that even if the dished me $100 toward a new pair I would have taken it, bought a new pair and been happy. I love the fit of the Timps. No love back from Altra. Hokas are still going strong and will be used on this trip.
I sent images and information to Altra and their response was: "We apologize for the inconvenience but this would be considered wear and tear. Since this is not considered a defect, we are unable to offer you a replacement."

I was very excited for the new TIMP 4 hoping they would be a good shoe for longer 50+ mile ultras vs running in my Olympus'.
The good- I like some of the updates with the TIMP 4. I did not like the 2s or 3s, way too narrow with a "standard" fit. The last TIMPs I liked were the 1.5s. The updates to the cushioning and better toe box on the 4s were a huge upgrade to the last two versions, I normally only wear the "original" fit shoes.
The bad- the upper blew out with only 164 miles of normal trail running. The forefoot outsole has already worn down to nubs. Maybe I received a defective pair, but numerous reviews have shown the same upper defect.
The ugly- No shoe should fail after 164 miles! I have twice used Altra's warranty with zero issues when pairs of Lone Peaks had similar early defects. Trail shoes should last 400 miles or more with no issues on the uppers, anyone running in Altra shoes is aware of their durability issues. I've defended Altra to other runners informing them if they have early defects the Altra warranty will take care of you. If Altra is going to no longer take care of their customers they will be losing us in masses.

I used to love Altras; unfortunately, I've been extremely disappointed with their quality lately. I wanted to like these shoes, but they just fell apart so quickly.
Starting with the good, the Altra fit is - as always - superb for someone with wide feet and the zero drop makes the ride so balanced. The stack height and cushioning is cushy on these shoes and I feel like I could run forever on them. When they're new, they rip on all terrain. Additionally, the heel is nicely padded and there's no movement back there. Overall, a great feeling shoe.
However, the poor durability and design detracts from almost all of this. While I do love big mountain runs, I didn't do any in the pair of Timps I have; I've put in about 170 miles of dry hardpack with maybe 20 miles of sidewalk running to and from the trailhead. And with that little of mileage on mellow trails, my shoes are completely falling apart. The forefoot lugs have completely worn down and don't do anything on trails anymore, causing my feet to slip everywhere. As someone in the PNW noted the same issues, they also don't work well on the dry trails of the mountain West once the forefoot lugs wear down.
The largest disappointment is that the sides of the upper are disentegrating, which affects the way the fit and gets worse each time I wear them. They've been relegating to road shoes for the few times I run on roads because they're useless on trails now. I'm not sure if this issue is due to the narrower fit (why??) which causes the outer metatarsal area to rub against the shoe. An additional bit that I noticed is that the ride is extremely unstable due to the draining vents in the midsole - they form what feel like tubes going through the foot and the edges collapse when cornering sometimes and it's resulted in me nearly breaking my ankles several times. I'm not sure if it's my build ~185lbs 6'3", but it's something to be weary of. Regardless, I won't be buying Altras anymore. It seems their shoes are going in the wrong direction (lightweight at the cost of durability with poor user testing).

I've had the Timp 2, 3, and now the 4. I loved the 2, but the upper blew up. The 3 was immaculate. Tougher upper, great midsole, and grippy outsole.
Enter the Timp 4. The new upper is fantastic. Seriously breathable, seriously comfortable, and very durable after 200 miles. The midsole is likewise great. Ego Max is a bit bouncier than the quantic and seems to be holding up just as well or slightly better. Then there's the outsole, which is a huge disappointment. It's still maxtrac, but they've changed the lug shape and have tapered the lugs for some reason. The result is that the grip is not nearly as good as the previous versions, especially when you run in the Pacific Northwest. On dry packed trails it's probably fine, but for the wet woods up here it doesn't work well. On top of that, the lugs underneath my mid foot (where it strikes) have rounded off even more and worn down very quickly, to the point that I'm worried about using them for an upcoming race.
When these stop being usable (which I fear will be sooner than later), I will look for a deal on the Timp 3. If there aren't any around, I'm not sure what I'll do.

The tongue that other reviews mention is a show stopper. It’s stiff and pokes into the front of the ankle. Immediate showstopper, and these are going back.

Bring back the 1.5s! This shoe has fantastic cushioning but this and the previous model lost width and volume and continue to be unwearable for me. The tongue has a rough edge but that’s a secondary issue. Another Altra model going mainstream when many of us flock to Altra for its width and have no other place to go - disappointing.

I love my Timp 2's and wanted to love these, but I could NOT get a heel lock no matter what size or lacing technique I used. I tried both my size (9.5), and a size smaller, and neither size would stay put. Plus, the smaller size meant the wide foot shape wasn't very wide anymore. The shoes were really cushioned, which was nice, but they're trending towards Olympus territory. If I wanted that much cushion I would have gone Olympus. Instead the gap between the Lone Peak and the Timp feels wider and wider instead of being more middle of the road. I wish Altra had just put a little bit of EGO Max on the Timp 2 platform and called it good. Unfortunately these went back to the store and I'm now left wondering where to go next in the Altra lineup.

Not going to purchase Altra’s again. Really disappointed with the durability on these. The mesh on the instep has completely worn away and separated from the sole. I’ve logged 140 miles on this pair and will be retiring these. This is my second pair of Timp 4’s, the previous pair had the same issue after 100 miles. Which is a bummer because these are comfy shoes out of the box.

The shoe arrived with a big knot on the inside of the upper which caused a blister. That didn't really matter though because the whole seam along the the inside to the bottom ripped around 120 miles.
