I should have read the reviews more carefully - it seems that people who purchased this backpack in 2021 - 2022 mentioned that the materials seemed to be less durable than previous versions and that was exactly our experience. I didn't look at the condition of the backpack until the end of the school year (missing the 1yr return policy) and noticed holes worn out on the bottom of the backpack. When I called the rep told me to mail it in anyway but it was sent back to me and I was told that they deemed it not due to poor materials but misuse.
This was used by my 5yr old kindergartener who is very careful with belongings (pants don't even have holes in them!) and he honestly doesn't have the strength to pull a backpack on the ground causing holes to form. The bottom of any backpack should be made with material strong enough to deal with daily wear and tear, so if there is any chance that your child may leave this bag on the ground, make sure you check on the bottom of the backpack before the 1yr window for returns! I sure learned my lesson.

Awful quality! This is cheap material, do not purchase if you expect it to last the school year .

I have had three of these L.L. Bean backpacks throughout school and university. I decided to order one for my 6 year old daughter. All of the backpacks I had were made of a quality thick durable canvas, that seemed cotton-like. My daughters new Lilac back back arrived and I was definitely disappointed to find out that it was made of a shiny thin stiff almost plasticy feeling material that is definitely some sort of nylon/polyester. It is awful and not soft or durable feeling at all. I am sad to say that we will not be purchasing another L.L. Bean back pack when my daughter is ready for a bigger back pack.

bought this for my son last year who is in 2nd grade, after 3 months there were multiple holes in the front pockets of the book bag..
i thought after many reviews of it lasting years it was worth the price...I know boys are rough on things but his previous bookbags from a different brand held up much better and still look fine

My daughter used this bag for both school and camping. A few other reviews stated that this bag lasted for 6 years, and this didn't even last for 1! Came in terrible condition, and when I called them, asking for a refund or a better backpack, they sent another bad conditioned one. Thought that we could at least use it for one year and ripped on the first day.

I'm honestly shocked at how cheaply made this back pack feels. Super thin and plastic-like. I'm embarrassed for my son to start school with it but since I paid over $40 with shipping and monogramming, he's gonna use it til it falls apart (I give it a few months max).

The bag came with the top ripped from where the thin material rubbed on the solid back. The material is almost see through and not durable. We have a 15 dollar bag from another place that is more durable. Do not purchase, it will not stand up to ine bus ride.

Very dissatisfied. The red fabric is so thin, it's almost see-through. Zippers are cheaper, the threads were already fraying when it arrived. Not the quality I've come to expect from LLBean, but the same prices. Can not recommend.
