My son loves this now, but on his first day of use the top zipper got jammed on the cover flap. He came home barely holding his backpack together. We worked for an embarrassingly long amount of time to fix. All seems good now!

Bought for my 9 year old grandson. Great size for him, he loves the water bottle pocket on the side and the compartments in the smaller front zip pocket. Wish the bigger section had a few more pockets on the inside-thus the 4 stars. This is his 3rd LL Bean backpack-his other 2 have been passed down to siblings as they last forever! He is now the 3rd generation using LL Bean backpacks for school-what more can you say!

Pack is smaller than I expected. More for smaller children.

Overall it looks great. I am concerned how long it will last, since it is not lined/reinforced.

Practical, handy, and sturdy. Doesn't feel fancy. Nice to be able to monogram.

We'll built bag for my 1st grader. I wish it came with a strap to reinforce the water bottle pouch. Bottles easily fall out. Otherwise great bag for elementary students.

Good size for my kindergartner. Holds everything he needs and there's room to spare. The silver stripe on the front is peeling off a little already and he's only used it for 3 weeks. It's fine and still functioning but a little annoying. Embroidery looks good.

I have this backpack from my youth (20 years ago!) and it's still in good shape! I have 1 for each of my kids now and am looking for a new color. I wish LL Bean would stick to the classic colors and offer more options! What about the classic hunter green, eggplant purple, regular black! I would keep buying if the colors were better!

This Original Backpack is perfect for me. It is roomy enough to hold a computer notebook plus various items. Although it is probably intended for younger users, it is ideal for older users. The two colors could be better integrated with the backpack design. Currently, they look like two different pouches stitched together. So, I have bought one with solid color. The new colors are interesting. I look forward to seeing a wide range of backpack with those colors.

I got 2 of these for my boys (5th and 7th grade) at a great price. Once they arrived I was a little surprised at the "fabric" it's like... The lining of a rain jacket. I thought it would be nicer looking, but I didn't pay full price so I was fine with this in my case. Once we got them all packed up, they are of course heavy. So my big guy started complaining about his shoulders and my little guy says " it's because the padding is squared off, it's not conforming its holding its shape and digging into your shoulder" so I maybe should have gone with the one that has the strap across the belly at least for the 7th grader with the larger (read:heavier) load of books and such. Overall satisfied with my purchase. 1 star knocked off for the above reasons.

I miss the LL Bean back pack of my youth but I loved the simplicity and quality of this bag for my boys. The zipper did stick a bit so we had to fold back the zipper cover flap. The straps are well padded. The interior has the right amount of room. I am very happy with my purchase. Perfect for second graders.

Classic backpack and just the right size. My only gripe is that the side pouch is small and regular sized water bottles frequently pop out. But I'm really here to say how much I love the new more muted and interesting colors, amber and dark plum. The two-tone are cool too. We got the royal blue last year and wish we'd had the chance to get one of these instead. Keep it up.

Agree with other reviewers. Same great quality but the two tone colors are hideous. Please bring back black, and other solid colors. Why change a good thing?

Get rid of the garish two-tone. Offer black. Add an unpadded laptop panel like on the Deluxe. Perfect!

first off, i love this bag. i had one as a kid in the 80s and now that i have to send a little one to school, what better bag to equip them with? the backpack is quality. what else would you expect from llbean? plenty of room for books, binders, notebooks; as well as room for tiny treasures in the front pocket. it was a struggle to pick a color though. why can't there just be a green bag? or a black bag? the addition of the contrast front pocket cheapens the look of the bag. for the price, you won't find a better bag out there. but for the price, you are very limited to the colors to choose from. good luck!

Shipping problem I purchased a back pack and a lunch box and got free shipping the next day I ordered a flannel shirt and requested that they admit to the other order so I could get free shipping . They did not/ would not even though it had not shipped yet. I asked them to correct it by waiving the shipping fee and the answer was "no"! Llbean is very expensive and this was awful customer service!. They sold a customer for a few dollars

The monogram is exceptionally small for this child size bag. It is not the size they used to be as I have always purchased book bags for my other four children and had them monogrammed. I was disappointed in the charge for such a tiny monogram. Also the thread did not come close to matching the trim in the bag.

Quality pack, but disapointed that monogramming is no longer available with on-line purchases and at my local store.

I love the backpack and it fits my 5 year old son perfectly. The embroidery looked awful though. I wish I would have just gotten the backpack and gotten his name stitched on locally. you can barely read his name -

The backpack was well built and we bought 2 of these after many recommendations and research! Both my kids complained about the shoulder straps being too thick and not liking how they sat on their shoulders. More my kids' problem than a quality issue!

Quality backpack. The only problem is the shoulder straps are very stiff and don't seem to have any cushion in them.

I used to love this backpack but the material is thinner than I remember. I would NOT recommend monogramming as it is so small! Find someone local who can utilize all the available space.

A little thin. I was hoping that it would be a little thicker. It feels like it might rip easy and you can see through the fabric but it's been good to be so far and the straps have a good thickness to them :)

It is a nice pack but too small for my needs, I was hoping to use it for traveling, but not enough compartments or space for what I have to bring. I will be returning it.
