Born and raised in Florida and was heading north so I needed something much warmer than I normally wear in FL. This jacket did not disappoint. Wore this jacket in weather that was in the upper teens/lower 20's. Was very warm with appropriate layers underneath. Normally order a medium but choose large on this jacket to accommodate layers. The large was perfect to wear a bulky, hooded sweatshirt underneath. Did not feel large or sloppy with just a moderate weight sweater underneath. Wore this jacket hiking and being that it is so light weight and compressible I was able to put it in a small stuff sack when I got too warm and that was a giant plus. The hood and the extended neck/face protection when zipped completely up eliminated the need for a hat and scarf in windy conditions. Washed the jacket as instructed after returning from trip and it came out looking great. No separation or clumping of the fill. Highly recommend for warmth and durability.

I bought the size 1X and the fit was too snug to wear over a sweater. So, I returned it and bought the 2X which fits much better. I love that this jacket is very light weight, but plenty warm. Worth the price!

Nice vibrant red color. Not the same typical color you find everywhere. Jacket is warm, comfortable & light weight.

Highest quality materials, superb construction, and PERFECT fit! As a new LL Bean customer, I was hesitant to order clothing online, due to fit/quality issues experienced previously with other online retailers. Rest assured, LL Bean delivers as promised. Merchandise looks even better out-of-the-box/bag than in the online photos---which are great to begin with. You get what you pay forand in my view, LL Bean sets the bar on clothing standards. I expect to enjoy my investment in LL Bean merchandise for years.

This is my fourth season wearing this jacket and I absolutely love it. It's cozy and comfortable, and the hood is just wonderful--it covers the chin and lower face when zipped all the way. I love how the jacket packs small into its own stow pocket. I also like that I can cinch down the bottom to block out the cold wind. I like the cut of the jacket--nice space in the shoulders and a slight drop hem. I *don't* agree that this coat is good down to -25* with moderate activity...I purchased this as a winter coat but only wear it into extended fall and early spring ranges; I needed a warmer coat for the coldest months of winter. I agree with other reviewers that the pockets would benefit from a warmer liner, but it's not a dealbreaker for me.
I find this jacket quite durable and sturdy for a lightweight down jacket! Unlike other reviewers, I haven't had problems with feathers coming out of pinholes in the jacket; on the rare occasion it does happen, I just pinch the fabric from behind to pull the feather back in, then message the fabric where the feather was poking out to close the pinhole (which is SOP for any down product). Unfortunately my cat did cause a small tear in my jacket but I repaired it with a bit of Tenacious Tape.
The only thing I absolutely hate about this jacket is the zipper which gets caught in the storm flap almost constantly. I have to remember to always pull the zipper firmly away from my body every time I zip up my jacket which gets old quick. Even so, I have a stubborn snag at least once a week, sometimes requiring help to get the zipper down and/or the jacket off. That being said, once this jacket wears out I will definitely buy another one. I'm hoping my zipper problem is an anomaly since I haven't read many other reviews that mention it.

I bought the coat for my wife, she wears it regularly. Its so light weight, I was afraid it wouldn't keep her warm but she often has to take it off when walking our dog when temps are in the 30's or 40's. She is very happy with it, I will likely have to get her an additional color before spring.

This jacket lives up to being very warm as well as very lightweight. I've worn it in temps approaching zero, and it was comfortable even without an extra layer underneath. I ordered a large online, and it was a very good fit, but I decided I might want an XL because the style itself is a bit more fitted than I'd anticipated. Went to our local LLB to try on the XL, and decided it would better meet my particular needs. The exchange was very pleasant and easy. Overall a positive experience and an excellent product for my needs.

We are from Florida but travel frequently and work outside in very cold areas. With a trip to Norway on the schedule this year, it was time to invest in a better winter coat as I am a wimp about cold weather. This coat has been wonderful, it is so warm and comfortable, yet seemingly weightless. I've worn it for two weeks now and with a flannel shirt underneath I am cozy in windy 30 weather. The jacket hasn't gotten too hot either when I am outside when the wind stops, yet active. This coat has been wonderful while flying too as it makes a nice headrest/pillow. My husband has a jacket from another outfitter but last night he was glancing covetously at mine, saying that the fill in the 850 was thicker than his and he was surprised that I hadn't complained once about the temperature. Time to order another jacket!

I bought this Ultralight 850 hooded down jacket for my 16 day late November/early December hiking and rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. I couldn't be happier with its performance! I stayed warm and cozy, thanks to this jacket and the hood. I wore it every night around camp and again each morning. I found that it made a perfect cold weather top layer when paired with wool thermals. I wasn't expecting the heavy dew we saw most nights in the bottom of the desert canyon and had several occasions when my jacket got wet/damp. I am so glad that I got DownTek down, as damp did not diminish the warmth this jacket offered. I loved that it packed small and doesn't require a separate stuff sack too. This jacket stood up to substantial wear and tear, emerging from the canyon still looking new. I washed it after my trip (cause it stunk) and was very pleased at how well it rebounded. If you're on the fence, buy it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I really like this jacket because it is stylish, very lightweight, warm and, very importantly, has a real hood. I bought petite medium. It's great! Sleeves are the correct length and the jacket length is good. I chose purple and have received many compliments on the color.

For years, I have trusted LL Bean, they consistently provide good products. So I was not surprised with this coat, it is comfortable, fits perfectly, and has all the pockets in the right places. I also have received several compliments. I bought it because it is light weight but warm and I can stuff it in my pack when traveling in planes because it is not bulky. Yet, it is perfect for walking the dog.

Thanks LLBean for making this jacket in plus sizes! It fits great, and is really warm (wore yesterday morning in 17 degrees and was toasty warm). Love the technical details - 850 treated down, ripstop shell of recycled poly, and relatively light weight - 1x is a hair over 13 ounces on my scale. I'll be using this jacket on shoulder season backpacking trips and around town this winter. Love this jacket!

The color was a major eye catcher. Perfect fit and you would not believe the comfort. Hello to warmth and goodbye to the breeze. Easily breathable and light weight. Best money spent on a jacket ever.

I really wanted this jacket in dusk blue, size medium, but they were sold out online and in my local store. The fantastic folks at LLBean found one in the Freeport store, so I bought it over the phone and it was delivered in two days! It fits great, is very lightweight and warm. I often get compliments on the color.

I'd normally order petite, but ordered this in regular for the extra length, and it's perfect! I can still wear a layer underneath if need be, and it doesn't look bulky. I love the adjustable bottom, and the adjustable hood!

I moved to Michigan from the south and knew I was in dire need of a great winter jacket. I was surprised it was so thin and couldn't understand how it would be warm but it's incredible. I think at the coldest so far, it's been 4 degrees and I've worn this jacket over a short sleeve t shirt and I'm warm and not at all affected by the cold. The fit is true to size and it's a very nice looking jacket. A definite must buy!

I'm SO pleased with my new beautiful blue ultralight 850 jacket. Quality and workmanship are the best. Exceptionally comfortable. I like how it "moves with me"... no binding or pulling. Where I live we have long, cold and WINDY winters --and this Ultralight jacket keeps me WARM. Just about the best jacket that I own in terms of comfort, warmth, 'breathability', and light weight. Definitely my 'favorite'!

I ordered this coat to replace my old down coat and I am really pleased with the fit and quality. It is very warm for being so light and it is easy to move around in. I am on the taller side and I like that the sleeves are long enough that they don't ride up on my wrists when I raise my arms. The juniper color is nice and it looks as I was expecting based on the photos.
