Boots were well made but the leather uppers were very stiff and made them uncomfortable to wear. I am considering the tumbled leather version which appear to be softer.

This pair of 8" boots was purchased for a gift. It was surprising that the lining inside was only at the bottom and did not go up fully to the top of the boot.
He says that they fit just fine...not too small as the size I bought years ago that I haven't worn much because they are too tight, despite them being the same size/width as my street shoes from various makers. LL Bean merchandise is usually pretty good, albeit a bit pricey.

I love regular bean boots. I ordered these for my son this time and followed the suggestion to order a full size down. It was still about a full size too big.
Also, like many here have described, the Thinsulate lining is so odd. It is only where the rubber is and does not continue up the ankle into the leather neck. I can't see how these would be very warm. See photo.
Although these were way too big overall and can't comment personally, others have described where the lining ends as something that digs into the side of the foot. See photo.

Purchased Size 13 Wide. The size was fine but only the footing area was thinsulated and not the whole boot. Did not like that from your ankle up there was only leather. So returned them. Did not understand from the description that the boot would only be insulated about 1-2" at bottom of boot.

Feet got wet on my new boots even when I was only walking on thin, but slightly slushy snow. Very disappointed. Will return.

These boots are very comfortable and following their sizing chart lead to a good fit. The boots are without a doubt water poof. With that being said I only gave them 3 stars due to the fact the laces leave a lot to be desired and their warmth in very low temperatures.
They are difficult to tie and will not stay tied. Warm is another issue for me. I'm not outside all day just going in and out over a period of time all day. Considering the boots I purchased are insulated and it's been in the single digits here in PA my toes were cold over the pass couple days, even with heavy wool hunting socks on.
I tried just wearing sweat socks but my toes were even colder.I went back to heavy wool hunting socks. Today the weather is more reasonable with the temps being in the low 30's my feet with heavy wool socks feel very comfortable!

The boots look great. I wear a size 10 shoe normally so i ordered a size 9 thinsulate bean boot. The boot is still way too big for my feet even with merino wool socks. The boots also make my feet extremely sweaty and uncomfortable. i need a smaller size but it is still winter and i need weatherproof boots to wear to get around campus. I know LL Bean has a legendary return policy and will make things right. I still love these boots and will hopefully be able to exchange for a smaller pair.

My last pair of these boots lasted 20 year! This fall, they simply disintegrated from old age. So I ordered a new pair and they were way to big, felt like clown boots!
I used the rapid returns and as soon as I told the representative what I had ordered, she said, I have to warn you, those come very, very large. I said, yeah, I wish that was told to me before I bought the ones I am returning.
I am sure they will be great boots, Bean does not sell any bad products. Kind of crummy that I have to pay to return the oversized boots that Bean knew was oversize to start with! Still, I recommend Bean boots to anyone, just order them one full size small, there will still be room for a heavy pair of socks!

I really wish these guys offered half sizes. I ordered a size down and it is close but pinches my toes, I ordered my regular size and it is too far too long. Doesn't fit with my thickest wool socks and the size down barely fit with regular cotton thin socks. I suggest trying these on in person if possible! I am also disappointed that the thinsulate insulation only goes around your feet and stops even before your ankles on the 8 inch boots.

Ordered a 13 - could have been a 15. I have a big foot and most 13's are right or a tad snug. There was a good 3 inches from my toe to the end of the shoe. Very well made. Great design. Materials seem top notch. Massively oversized. So much so that I honestly think one size down might not be enough.

The LL Bean boots are definitely NOT true to size. My son wears an 11 in all other shoes and can wear a 9 in these boots. We have waited over 2 months for these boots to arrive and they are way too big. I spoke with customer service prior to ordering and she stated that with a thick wool sock he should wear a size 11 so that is what I ordered. These were a Christmas gift and we finally received them on February 7th. Needless, to say I will be returning the boots and getting a refund. Hopefully next year we can order again and have them in time for Christmas with a size that fits!

I bought these boots (size 12 Medium D, father is 5'10" 178lbs.), he wears a regular size 12 boot and knew he was going to wear heavy socks if he had these, for my father in February of 2015. He always bought cheap 30 dollar boots for work that would last him 6 months and continued doing so for a couple of years. I decided to by him this pair of boots from L.L.Bean since they are known for quality products, if you want something to last you have to pay for quality. He decided to wait and wear them in November, I wanted him to try them right away because we live in New England and the last 2 months of winter were pretty bad, and that's were the problem began for him. He wore them to work with long heavy knit socks once, never wore them again, I asked him how the boots were in January of this year when I saw him again. Told me the boots rubbed the front and sides of his shin's raw and no matter what socks he wore it felt the same. Wish he had worn them sooner then i could have done something thru L.L.Bean customer service but too little too late I guess.

I wanted the 8" thinsulate boot in Dark Ash color. Size 10M was too big; size 9M too small. Would have liked to try a size 9EE but they don't come in Dark Ash color... disappointing...

I wear a size 12 sneaker. I ordered these boots at the same size, since the sneakers fit perfectly. The boots I received had just over one inch of extra toe room with thick socks on. The sizing error is a product defect, hence a star off. The fact that I have to pay $6.50 to return by mail, and schlep them to UPS, is worth another star off for the expense and inconvenience.
LL Bean should revise the boots or the specified sizes to conform to standard shoe sizes.
I am re-ordering a size 11. I hope they fit better; there are no half sizes.
They do not stock them in the stores, so there is no way to try them on before buying them.

These boots are rated to 15 degrees, but they are the coldest set of footwear I own - insulated or not - except possibly my summer flip-flops. The rubber seems to conduct coldness through the boot and thinsulate & my foot is typically cool. Stand in snow for any length of time that touches the rubber side of the boot & it is like putting your foot on ice. The boot doesn't leak, but I was looking for something warmer than my sneakers.

I wanted something warmer than the noninsulated rubber gum shoes that I have had for approx 4 years and absolutely love. These are very disappointing since they are not a bit warmer and cost considerably more. I wear my gum shoes all year long, but just wanted to try the taller and "insulated" style for extra warm during the winter. I am sure these are going to be good boots, but not for any warmth. So just get the ones without Thinsulate and keep the extra money. When the original order arrived the right boot felt like it had a lump in the bottom of the sole and it hurt my foot. I called customer service and the lady that I dealt with was absolutely fantastic in assisting me in their return and exchange for these. I have never dealt with a company whos customer service tops L.L. Bean, so even thought I am disappointed in the warmth, I will keep them, but I am going to order another pair of the gum shoes right away, they are great..

I bought these boots to replace another pair of Bean boots that I had for several years. My old model had thinsulate throughout the boot and were terrific. Based on the website description, I expected these boots to have thinsulate everywhere as well. Unfortunately, that is not the case. When I got the boots, I found that the thinsulate is barely there, only covering the bottom 1 inch or so of the boot...the insulation does not even fully cover the rubber part at the bottom.
The fit was just right and very comfortable and I think the general construction was excellent. My only complaint is that I bought these believing they would be "warm and dry" as the website description says, but seeing the actual amount of insulation was disappointing. Now I'm left with the hassle of returning them.
If you are looking for cold weather boots, these are not the right choice.

I previously had the same boots but only lined and with metal hooks to pull laces on. These had to be strung through like the hunting boots and were not as warm. Still a good boot but I felt it was not descriptive enough on the web site... at least for the price.

I followed the directions on size and am returning for a larger size. The directions indicate these boots run very large but when I downsized from a 10 1/2 to a 9, they were way too small. The quality looks great but I need the correct size to give it five stars.

The last pair of these type of boots I had ran small, so this time around I ordered one size larger and found that to be too big and will have to wear thick socks to make up the difference.
It would be nice if you could order them in 1/2 sizes so I am not dealing with a cramped foot or a floppy boot.
Also I have small ankles and the hole size for the ankles is rather large for me it would nice if you could specify a smaller opening to ensure it can tie tight to your ankle.

I have a pair of these that I bought while in college over 20 years ago & still love them! So when my husband asked for some new "mud boots" I knew exactly where to look...however, his are way too big & we will be sending them back. The construction is excellent & they are otherwise great, but even with thick socks they slide all over his foot. If only he could wear them, I am sure they would rate 5 stars

I bought the L.L. Bean 8" Thinsulate boot. I ordered a 12 Medium. I had a pair of L.L. Bean slip-on boots previously, and that was the size I had then.
Well, on these lace-up boots, that size is too wide. I put on heavy socks, and I lace the boots up as tight as they will go, and the boots are still loose on my feet.
I've already worn them too much to send them back, so I'll have to add even more socks. But in the future I would opt for the 12 Narrow.

The quality of workmanship for the product is excellent, nothing wrong there. The boots are incredibly light weight but still seem like they can take some serious abuse. The leather upper is a heavy piece of leather and the rubber boots itself is a decent thickness, the sole is thick but the heal of the boot is a little to narrow, it affects the wearers stability a little bit. My major complaint is that I was under the impression that these boots would be insulated on the leather upper as well as the foot area. There is no insulation on the leather upper and the insulation in the foot area is very thin. It consists of a piece of quilted fabric on the bottom of the boot and skirting the rubber sides of the boot, nothing is insulated on the leather upper. If you plan on standing around in these boots don't count on them keeping your feet warm. L.L Bean needs to go into more detail on how the boots are insulated and showed provide a comfort rating as well. I imagine with a thick pair of wool socks all should be well, but have yet to test them out in the cold.
