Right out of the box I loved them. They were comfortable and felt secure. After a few long trail runs I started the question. Their durability. 30 miles into a 100 miler the inserts started sliding all over and eventually folded into balls under my feet. Had to ditch them. Now the inserts are ruined. Would probably be fine if I got a secondary pair of inserts. When put to the test they just didn't seem durable enough to be considered a true trail ultra shoe.

I've gone through two pairs of the Salomon Ultra Glide over the past 6 months logging 650km and 450km respectively on each pair. I've used them for everyday training, racing 50km to 60km ultra races, and fastpacking the Hardrock 100 route. After all this, the upper is solid and doesn't show much wear, the midsole shows a bit of decay but still provides a responsive bounce, the outsole is significantly worn out.
In general, the shoe is well designed but there are two aspects that should be improved in future iterations of the shoe: The outsole deteriorates much faster than expected. The lugs show significant wear after 200km and are completely gone after 600km. The shoes drain moisture poorly. After stream crossings, they stay wet for a very long time and even hold puddles of water if you don't flip them upside down to dry.

Part of the reason these shoes are not for me is my fault. I wear a size 12. I ordered a size 12- big mistake. I should have taken a second look at the size chart and I should have tried on a pair somewhere first. Toe killers. Can't use them. That's all my fault. First run- a painful 16 miler. Second run a successful 8 miler. Toes really didn't get too sore. Third run a painful and wet 14 miler in extreme Texas heat. These shoes hold water. It's like running in a bathtub. There's nowhere for water to escape and I literally wrung water out of my socks after the run. I wish I lived them, but I don't.

Generally a big salomon advocate, both for gear and shoes, and they fit me well . But these ultra glides aren't really up to it. The insoles are appalling, and slide around inside the shoe which is not what you want during a long ultra. The problem is exacerbated in the wet and on any slightly uneven terrain, and a recently I had to take off the shoe to re-place the insole 3 times, before swapping out my shoes to continue to race. I wouldn't buy again and I'm struggling to see when I'll wear them again. Disappointing for a sizeable investment

I have several pairs of Solomon trail shoes and love them. The ultra glide is comfortable and works great for long distance. Unfortunately, the outsole durability is a problem. I have 150 miles on them and already several lungs are completely worn smooth. My previous Sense Ride and S/Lab Ultra 3 shoes have more than 250 miles each and have minimal wear. Salomon's has a winning shoe In the ultra glide if they can fix the durability issue.

Hi, I would like to know if the shoe is true to size. I always been 9.5 in all my salomon shoes but last year I had an issue with the ultra pro, they became bigger than all my other Salomon's so I had to order another pair in size 9.

Shoes are pretty good but the quick lace system is absolutely terrible. You can't even loosen them enough to get the shoe on without a monorail struggle. If the laces were bigger it would be much better. Most frustrating shoe I have ever had.

Have the ultra glides for almost 3 months now and loved everything about them. They were fast becoming my favourite salomon shoe but unfortunately after about 100 miles I noticed some of the lugs were wearing away. These were supposed to be Salomons long lasting trail shoe and looks like the sole is going to wear out in no time. I currently have 3 pairs of salomons in rotation, wildcross for very muddy terrain, sense ride 3s for everyday training and ultra glide for longer trail runs. I have 90 more miles done in my sense rides and the lugs are still perfect in them, I dont know if salomon have used a different compound in their contra grip soles for the ultra glide or not but it seems far less durable. Its such a pity because I do love everything else about the shoe and I am a big salomon fan, I have a lot of their clothing and 2 running vests. I usually praise their quality to everyone.
I've added a few pics of the difference between sense rides and ultra glides along with the miles ran in each.

I have about 200 miles on this pair already. The cushion took some getting used too as I am used to Salomon Pulsars and S/lab ultra 3. They felt comfy but also felt like I lost some power from the stride, every runner is different so worth a try. My only design complaints would be the road shoe like collar which easily allows gravel to enter the shoe and that the lacing system doesn't compete well against the thickness of the upper for a very snug feel.

Love the fit and the ride...up until a certain point. The shoes don't drain sweat well. Once they become saturated, the ride becomes slappy and squishy. I tried a few different types of socks with them and all produced the same results. I'll try them again when the weather cools down.

Had a long weekend run and the feeling is great but the problem started on the downhills when the inner soles started moving inside the shoes. Had to take them off couple times during the run and fix it. Please suggest if I need to glued them....

Bought a month ago. Did well in training hills/trail up to 17 miles. Used in Kettle 100 for the first 60 miles and then switched to Altras. I love the idea of the Ultra Glides. Slowish drop. Good lockdown. Good lacing. Good traction. The sum of the excellent parts is not excellent for me.

I put the shoe on in my house, walked around and the crease already pinched my forefoot. The only way to get the shoe runnable was to cinch it down all over and that alleviated the pinch, but then it cut off circulation to my foot. I can only run about 5 miles in this shoe before it hurts my foot. I wanted this shoe to work so badly too.

PROS:
-Build quality, materials and construction: Excellent
-Weight: Very Light
-Laces: Excellent
-Footbed, sole and tread: Excellent
CON - Toe box too narrow and tight
Purchased these for mixed road/trail running/hiking. Felt sufficiently comfortable in home, but eventually they must be put the paces outdoors. After about a 10 miler, both big toes had severe hotspots/blisters, some minor bone pain from being too squeezed and bleeding under nails. All this cleared up, but the narrow toe box caused the problem.
Again, everything else about these shoes is excellent. However, you should avoid if you have wide feet. Otherwise you will end up with minor injuries.

I want to love this show, but on my long mountain runs it falls short. Hurts my feet and not a lot of traction. Will use for shorter dirt or gravel races.

Review for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
Runs SmallRuns Large
Poor SupportGreat Support
I wear and review a lot of shoes. I’m looking for an ultra marathon shoe for then long haul. This is not it. Upper is a bit harsh and unforgiving. The midsole is not very plush. The forefoot feels a little narrow - and I ordered the WIDEs!
These are good for up to 10 or 15 miles on a gravel path - nothing technical.
Also the “garage” where you store the laces after you tighten your shoe is hard to get to.

Bought these with high hopes going into a 50 mile race. After a break-in period I started the race with them but wasn't able to complete it with the ultra glides. I developed major blood blisters on both heels. Rocky descents and rocky portions of the trails caused my heels to slide around quite a bit. The Ultra glides contributed to me missing my race goals. I also tried to use them in a 10m race a month or so later and developed the same hot spots during descents and had to change shoes again. Wasted money. I wanted to love them but they were destroying my feet. The grip was good and the stability/cushion was good, they just didn't fit me properly.

I have run a good few miles in these shoes and they are comfortable and good on trails, when it is dry. Unfortunately I found out, while doing an ultra in Wales, that they are not good in the wet! The grip pretty much disappeared and often felt like road shoes (stony, muddy ground).
Worst of all though - all the plastic around the sides keeps the water in! It rained heavily (twice) during the event and the rain happily went in through the top mesh, but had no way of coming out again. I spent the last few miles feeling like I was running in a river.
Unfortunately I will not be buying these again, nor would I recommend them to anyone :-(
Bring back the Ultra/Pro, they were great.

These seemed like a great shoe, comfortable out of the box, decent traction, breathable, Salomon's great lacing system. Unfortunately in my case I completely wore through the sole to the point they are throwaways in about 3 months of usage. (50/50 dirt and pavement, 2-3 miles per day walking the dog).
I have multiple pairs of Salomon's still in rotation that had 4x the mileage on them with no problems. Can't recommend this shoe. Still like Salomon, they fit me the best, but no go on the ultra glide.

I left a review having first bought these shoes a few months ago and said I'd leave another long term review as those were lacking at the time.
The first major caveat with this review is that out of the 200+ks I've done in these shoes, only about 50 have actually been running. That's principally because all the talk of "wider toe box" is fine but for my mildly wide feet the midfoot is simply too narrow, this combined with the harshness of the overlays means blisters. I cannot run more than 6 miles in these shoes before blisters appear just back from the ball of my feet on the instep. After this happening a few times I lost patience, bought another pair by a different brand and thought I would break these in with some low impact dog walks, in the hope that they would ease and I could enjoy the lightness and bouncy ride.
So after over 200k of walks + runs later these are my findings:
- Upper; has just about softened up so a 6 miler is now more comfortable but still stiff, on the plus side the upper would likely last for 1000 miles, it's that intact still. The overlays are great for fending off early morning due on walks but are still a real issue for me working in tandem with the tight midfoot to cause blisters.
- Quick lace; I still love this system, lockdown is great, no heel slip at all. I've even enjoyed using the shoes as slip ons with the system untightened for ultra comfy quick outings.
- Lace garage; it's not hard to work this out but after time it does become frustrating that with a tight lockdown you are spending a minute or two simply trying to get the toggle into it. It's just unnecessary faff when you're keen to get out the door. The right one's stitching also frayed and came loose after 2 uses.
- Heel counter material; the material on the inside of the ankle and heel isn't great, it started bobbling and gathering material from my socks after the 3rd run and now looks like it's a veteran of many years of action, a side effect of this is it's now a bit coarse when wearing thin socks (which I need to do due to the fit)
- Midsole; no issues here for me, still really fun to run in, light, bouncy, comfortable, but I have only actually run 50ish k.
- Outsole; here is another real frustration, I am just about getting the upper to a tolerable place and yet the outsole is noticeable worn already, where I strike with the outside of my foot I reckon ive got another 50 miles before the tread is completely gone, that really isnt good enough.
So there it is, 200k of frustration as this shoe has great potential and is really fun to run in, until it starts shredding my feet. I really want to use it more but it's only ever going to be a sparing quick and short runner and vastly over qualified summer dog walker I'm afraid.

First impressions out of the box were good. The shoe is light and rolls along nicely. So much so that after a week I ordered a second pair half a size smaller than the first. As others have mentioned UK sizing is out by about half a size compared to all other Salomon shoes.
There are a few areas that can be improved. The lace garage is poorly executed with the top lace covering it entirely, collar and tongue are too thick to give a good ankle and heel lockdown and the rand that runs around the entirety of the shoe means that water does not drain out at all.
The big issue with these shoes is durability. The extremely poor inner sole not only slides around when wet but becomes paper thin after less than 50 miles of normal use. The lugs wear extremely quickly - the image shows my Blue UG's on the left with 183 miles, Black UG's with 195 miles and XA Elevates at 446 miles. All have been used in similar environments and the difference in wear is huge from front to rear.
This however, is not the major issue with the shoe. From 100 miles the midsole degrades significantly and is now totally destroyed. Any pebble in the mid or forefoot can be felt and there is zero bounce left in the shoe at all. These are now firmly in the short recovery run pile which is very disappointing for a Salomon shoe as I normally get 400 to 500 miles out of a pair and have never had the midsole break down yet.
They should be a great shoe for mild trails (definitely not a mountain shoe due to lack of foot protection and lockdown) but unless the mid-sole and outsole are addressed they simply do not offer value for money disappointingly.

I bought this shoe with the idea of using it for an upcoming r2r2r in the Grand Canyon. It was fine on the 1st couple of shorter trail runs I tried it on. Not so for the first longer run. We had planned 22 miles on jeep roads which turned out to be much rockier and overgrown than expected. The shoe was not grippy enough on rocks or skree and did not do a good job of protecting my feet. My feet took a serious beating that day. I tried them the following week on one of my regular routes with the first half a rocky uphill trail and then a downhill on a paved road. Again on the rocky parts the shoe was unstable. Worse, coming down the road, I had to cross water several times and the insole ended up bunching up in my toes. Even when I stopped to pull it back out, it would not stay flat under my feet. Having said that, the shoe is comfortable on dry, flat roads and well maintained dirt roads - so I will keep it around for those situations (with an aftermarket sockliner now). It seems to be more of a beefy road shoe.

My first Salomon shoe in the last 4 years, and i will say that i am disapointed. Had high hopes due to the hype. They are quite comfortable and agile on less technical trails and in very dry conditions. on more technical terrain with a lot of rocks and roots they are very slippery underfoot. In wet or humid terrain these are the worst trail shoes i have tried, as they are slipping constantly. I almost died twice in my first two runs in humid/wet condition. The fit is also weird, as they run quite long. Not true to size compared to other brands.

Was disappointed.
I bought another wide model from you a few months ago and love it. That's why I ordered this wide model. Unfortunately, this one squeezed my foot to the point it was uncomfortable. I had to return it.
I must say your return policy and customer service was exact!!
I will solve the problem by buying the first wide model that I love in a different color.

I used these shoes for a long technical run on the Appalachian Trail and very disappointed with the overall performance of the shoe. They do not hold your foot in place and are not good on technical terrain. They do not grip on the rocks and you feet smash into the front of the shoes on the steep downhills. I tried to adjust them several times, but it didn't help. My feet were pretty beat up after the 20 miles on the trail and wouldn't recommend them for that application.
