My wife and I have been wearing the original Smartwool hikers for 20+ years.
I started noticing changes several years ago. Now they aren't even close to the original.
After doing some research, I think I might have found the problem.
As is the norm these days, the original company and name were bought out, and now owned by a large corporation.
Thus, to improve that all important bottom line, changes were made.
Now, we have just a facsimile of the original.
Wikipedia:
Smartwool is an American clothing company. It was founded in 1994 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado by ski instructors Peter and Patty Duke. In 2005 The Timberland Company acquired Smartwool and in 2011 Smartwool became a subsidiary of VF Corporation upon VF Corporation's acquisition of The Timberland Company.[1][2][3][4]
The new socks are just cheap copies of the original.
Buy something else.

I am wearing hike classic light cushing smart wool socks for work daily and hiking for the last 15 years. The socks loose fit immediately within hours after first use. My new socks are too big already within the first day and build wrinkles in my shoes. The socks widened and enlarged both. Very disturbing and uncomfortable. I will switch to another brand.

BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL VERSION:
Disappointed in quality relative to the originals, which I have had for years. Unlike the originals, the socks don't stay up. They seem to have less wool and/or weaker nylon or elastic than the original. Here is the current composition: Knit in USA of Imported Yarn: 56% Merino Wool, 11% Nylon, 31% Recycled Nylon, 2% Elastane. If this is different than the original, that may explain the issue I am having. I will not be buying these again unless this problem is addressed.

Not the greatest socks for hiking 16 + hours in a day do not recommend for hiking boots. Used with Kenetrek boots
