I usually wear 8.5 in sneakers. I got these wide width as I'm always looking for space for bunions. Width is perfect but they're too long and kind of clownish looking. Comfort is great. I'll try non-width and I'll try going down a half size and see. I don't care about look as much as comfort but this pushes my limit on that philosophy.

I did not realize the toe box was going to be so wide. I cannot wear them running because there is to much open space so I wear them at work. I feel like I have duck feet due to the width!

First, the positive: these are super cute compared to other versions of the Superior. Great color options, and I really like the overall look. Also, I believe these are true to size. Other reviews are saying these run small, but I wear an 8.5 in every running and hiking shoe I own, and the 8.5 fits me perfectly, as far as length is concerned. ( i think there may be confusion among customers because the sizing throughout the last few models has been really inconsistent. The 4s ran super long).
Now for the negative: I've been hiking in the Superior since version 2.0, and I'm sad to say that these don't have that sock- like, snug, flexible feel that the 2s, 4s, and 4.5s had. They feel a bit clunky and clumsy, not what I expect from the Superior. Also, i am unable to tighten the laces all the way, because when I do, it causes pain across the top of my foot and numbness. So, I can't get that snug feel through the mid foot and my foot is kind of slipping around. I think the discomfort has to do with the way the side reinforcements ( that attach to the laces) do not extend at enough toward the center of the top of the foot. There is a lot of pressure on top of my foot from the laces, and I would prefer each side of the lace to be closer together - more shoe across the top of my foot, less lace.
These are a great looking shoe, and I really wish they had that "signature" superior feel. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next version!

I’m a huge fan of Altra, and have several other styles that I wear. This particular style felt a 1/2 size smaller. I returned them, thanks to Zappos wonderful customer support.

I've been buying the Superiors for years and went through about 7 pairs of the 4.5's in the last year (I hike 1,600+ miles/year). VERY disappointed in how the 5's fit and feel. Bring the 4.5's back!!

I originally bought a pair of Timp 2 and loved them. So I decided to try a different style and bought the Superior 5. Not the same experience. I think I've narrowed it down to the wrap around tongue. It makes the shoe feel a little narrow and doesn't seem to have the same flexibility. TI can wear the Timp 2 all day and my feet still feel great. I was thinking of ordering the Olympus because I wanted the extra cushion but unfortunately they have the wrap tongue. I am not going to spend that kind of money on another pair I don't love. I wonder if they could offer the same styles with and without the wrapped tongue. I will probably stay with the next generation Timp for my next purchase.

They fit okay but the back of the shoe was too stiff without much padding and it injured my Achilles.

I was, for the first time, VERY disappointed in Altra. They have always had an ample toebox shape before which is what set it apart from all the other running shoes which now feel like Chinese foot binding to me. At least this model had some overall flexibility and weren't completely stiff.

Not sure, I've always bought Altra for running. Will have to do research now to get the right type.

Looks good but hurts the big toe significantly. There must be a manufacturing defect.

This shoe is so stiff that I hate how it feels to wear them. It's like walking on a wood or metal sole with barely any flexibility. I'll give these away.

These shoes are really comfortable because they are designed to accommodate the toe spread that the human foot has naturally. They have good traction for short hikes. Because of how they are designed, I feel I am less likely to twist an ankle (no big foam layer!).

After wearing my Superior 3's until they fell apart, I've had these new Superiors 5's for only 2 months, and put 27 miles on them. Suddenly the inside of the toe guard has come off and rubs against the top of my toes in a way that makes them unwearable. From other reviews, that seems to be a common problem with this shoe, but Altra's warranty department has denied my warranty claim since they can't see a defect in the pictures they asked me to send. (Have you ever tried to take a picture inside a shoe?) I'm looking at different brands for foot-shaped trail runners now, because I tried the new Lone Peaks and hated them too.

I always wear a 5.5 in Altras. This style feels an entire half size short. My toes hit the end of the shoe. The height of the toebox is very tight and I wasn’t able to wiggle my toes up and down in the shoe. The height of the shoe around the arch is also very tight. For high volume foot this shoe does not work at all. Such a shame because the previous models of the Superior have been wonderful. I’ve noticed that Altra is really starting to skimp on materials and I’m not sure how long this brand will be viable which is too bad since they are one of the few with a wide toebox. Returning.

I have these and after 100 miles the toe guard /front part on the inside of the shoe became unglued and now rubs my toes. Didn't think it was going to start falling apart so quickly.

The material on the top of the shoe is way too thin. You can see and feel your toes pushing up through it. The lacing also does not extend down the foot far enough to give enough support to keep your foot from sliding forward in the shoe. Anytime I was on a decline my foot slid forward and my toes were crushed into the front of the toebox. This was my first Altra purchase and overall very disappointed.

Bought this shoe for my kiddo who typically wears a size 5. Couldn't get this shoe on even though it's a 5.5. Worn Altra's before in a size 5 and they were great. Not sure what's different with these ones.

The tongue is sown in on one side. Makes shoe too tight. Tongue should have elastic on both sides.

I've been loyal to Altra for years and this is the worst shoe I've owned! The soles are garbage - not only do they have terrible traction, they started separating within two weeks of wear.
