Capacious, even if a bit heav. Fits bulky school binders fairly well.

I think it is very nice but I think it should have more space in the main compartment to put binders in it because it is a very tight fit and can't put anything else.

So far the backpack is good. There are some useful compartments. I am very concerned about the strap that connects the shoulder straps to the pack. They are made of the same material that the last backpack that only lasted a year was made of. North Face, please make sturdier connector pieces in this aspect of the backpack. Sorry to be so skeptical, but I remember North Face backpacks used to last all four years of high school and I to college, not barely through freshman year.

I bought this bag for my son who is going into 9th grade. He likes that it has a lot of small pockets. He also likes that he can carry it to school and not have a sore back. The shoulder straps are comfortable and padded, so he doesn't have any shoulder pain. Overall, it's a great bag for high school students who have to carry it to school every day.

This back pack is very spacious. Great quality and durable. More room for a few extra dollars. The only thing is I wish the sides expanded more where the water bottles sit, for the backpack to open wider.

Great backpack for a teacher! I love all the pockets that fit everything in it. I did buy the backpack made for guys because I liked the color more than what was available for women. Seems to be a tad long. Doesn't quite fit as comfortable on the back and at my chest as I would like. I would not personally use this backpack for hiking or outdoor things as a female. But it's great from going to my car to work or to professional developments. For reference I am 5'4"

Purchased this backpack just prior to a trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Could not be happier with it. It worked great to transport two laptops, clothes etc to the west coast. It also worked great in the parks to pack water and food for hikes etc. Very happy with this purchase.

This is a great backpack for trips, vacations, and school. It has three main compartments and two other pockets that can hold stationaries ,sunglasses and other smaller items. The first compartment is a sized one that I use for holding my phone, charging cables, and my wallet. The second compartment is a full sized main compartment for you books. The third compartment is a computer sleeve and folder sleve. The computer sleeve can fit a 15.6" laptop at max comfortably. The only thing I didn't like about this backpack is that doesn't hold as many books as comfortably as I would have liked. So I would say if you're going to use this for school then I would suggest taking another bag or cart with you so that you don't crumple the books.

This backpack was a warranty replacement for my surge I bought 8 years prior. My new surge is even better. It's much more comfortable and the water bottle pouches are better designed. I am really impressed. Northface received my old backpack and replaced it with a gift card in under 2 weeks. That's great service.

The bag is definitely good for everyday use. However, I found it useful for Rucking with a 30lb plate (which fits perfectly in the Computer Sleeve).

I love my Surge. I bought it about 4 years ago for weekend trips. I've dragged it along in the car, boat and airplane for ski trips, fishing trips, hunting trips, and just regular short excursions. I can fit both my laptop and iPad in the laptop section and still have plenty of room in the main compartment. The smaller compartments are great for toiletries, phone chargers, snacks, etc. I highly recommend the Surge. The Surge is very durable and shows no signs of falling apart.

Great bag, a lil short on space for my use. Well made, durable and comfortable, lots of pockets to organize your things, just wish it was slightly bigger.

I bought this to replace a North Face Overhaul 40 backpack that I've had for about ten years. It was great, but the lining had started to disintegrate with age and I found that my stuff always had little black flakes all over it. This bag is a major step backward from the Overhaul 40. First of all, it's just as large physically, but somehow it holds 10 L less (the Overhaul 40 was rated at 41 litres, this one is rated at 31 liters). How does that work? Secondly, the pockets are nowhere near as convenient the Overhaul 40 had a few pockets inside of the main compartment which were very useful, and now they're just gone, replaced by a completely open space. So much for being able to organize anything. This one has more outside pockets, but I don't always want to put everything (especially medications, etc.) in outside pockets. The Overhaul had a convenient, flap-covered pocket in the top specifically for sunglasses, that is lost here. It also had a small, semi-hidden pocket in one side that was good for stashing things that you want to keep out of view (cash, etc.) but want to have easily accessible. Again, that's gone in this one. What we get with this one instead is a stiff back (it feels like maybe there's a stiff sheet of plastic in there?) which might or might not be helpful in carrying it but is almost definitely adding weight. And some oddly placed, not particularly convenient or usable pockets on the back. Finally, while the interior dividers are rather bulky, the outside fabric feels thinner and flimsier I hope it will hold up over time, but I've got my doubts. Honestly, I'm not very happy. But I need something for some upcoming travel, and this is the best I've found. So I'll live with it. But North Face really needs to rethink their design and bring back the Overhaul 40. Newer isn't always better, and in this case it's definitely not.

I had an old Surge Backpack and it was great to use and it fit everything I needed for a day at work or for a short trip. The new Surge does not seem to be able to fit all of the items I typically carry. I has some nice new features that I though may be worth giving it a try. Unfortunately it does not fit my need. So I am back to my old one after a quick wash.
