I purchased three of these coats for my kids (6, 4, and 2) this year. They're ideal car seat coats, and have all the features I look for to keep cold air out - drawstring bottom, elastic cuffs, and a close-fitting hood with an elastic edge. However, the fabric is so thin and fragile I will never bother with these again. All three coats have ripped to the point of being ruined. LL Bean replaced the first, which ripped on the second wear, but the other two were purchased too long ago (purchased September 22, now March 23). I wanted these coats to work for us so badly because they're otherwise perfect, but the slew of negative reviews regarding the quality of the fabric are accurate. What a shame and what a waste.

I purchased this jacket for our 6 year old daughter. Fit well, warm and lightweight, but ripped in multiple places in less than one week of wear simply by playing in the (deep) crunchy snow at recess (snow angels, tumbling in the snow, etc). The outer layer is extremely thin! I was unable to exchange or return, and was told by a LL Bean rep that she purposely chooses not to buy these types of jacket for her kids for exactly this reason. I used outdoor gear tape to patch the holes, but it doesn't look great. For the price, I was extremely disappointed in the quality of this jacket; it's somewhat laughable that I purchased it with the goal of passing it down to her younger brothers. Also disappointing was LL Bean's response / lack of response; I am much less inclined to continue purchasing from this company in the future.

Over the years I've purchased several LLBean jackets for my family. This year I decided to purchase this jacket for my 7 year old son. After about a month of wear he pointed out three holes in the jacket where the feathers were coming out. I had similar issues with my own LLBean jacket and was advised to pull the feathers from the inside of the jacket. I tried this but it didn't work and the more you PULL the feathers out, the more feathers come out. I tried to sew one of the holes which only made the hole bigger, as the thread seemed to be ripping the fabric even more. I sent the jacket back hoping for a replacement but was told that it's accidental damage and that kids tend to be rough. They don't consider it product failure because the Ultra Light jacket is delicate and it's a trade-off for having such a lightweight jacket. Nowhere in the product description does it mention being delicate, not appropriate for kids, etc. For the price, I expect it to be durable enough for a 7 year old or at least to be repaired. They offered to repair the holes at my expense for an expensive jacket that were more than likely caused by feathers coming out of the jacket. I expected a lot more from LLBean.

We were disappointed that this coat couldn't withstand 1 recess. We were unable to get a refund due to "accidental damage" however my son has had many coats in his 9 years and all of them were able to withstand outdoor play. Would not recommend for use outdoors.

Sadly, the down stuffing is coming out through the shell in several locations after less than one month of ownership. It's as if the down is coming out through tiny pinholes in the shell. Otherwise, we loved the style, color and fit.

Unfortunately, this material is so fragile, it ripped within two days of us having it. Love everything else about it, but not worth the money when it rips so easily.

I've gotten LL Bean for my son every winter. We live in Minnesota and need warm, quality outerwear. This coat seemed great at the store when he tried it on. He loved the color and I liked the fluorescent logo for night time but it is leaking feathers and the threading is coming out. We bought it November 27 and it is December 27one month! I'm shocked about the really bad quality. I would not recommend this coat. What's up with the bad quality, LL Bean?

My son has had this for only 2 weeks or so. The jacket is great and warm but the material is thin. It snagged on something accidentally today, and it slightly ripped. Don't recommend, especially for active children.

We bought the same jacket last year and it was awesome. This year if came with a zipper missing teeth and it's lots less warm.

I have just spent the past two beautiful Maine days ripping out and replacing a zipper in my four year old grandson's LL Bean Down Tek jacket. A thought has been running incessantly through my head - how can LL Bean - the company that sources the best cashmere for my sweaters and the finest flannel for our sheets choose such an inferior zipper for children's active clothing. This jacket was purchased with the thought that it would be THE winter jacket for my grandson for a couple of years. Needless to say, with a faulty zipper - it's just a heap of material in the closet. Your motto "Be an Outsider" - clever and catchy as it is - is difficult to experience when the "outside" gets inside a little boy's jacket on a cold winter day because the zipper doesn't work!

This jacket ripped the first time my son wore it. The store manager's response was, "Just so you know this is fabric and fabric can rip." I would not buy this jacket again based on both the poor quality and customer service.

I almost never write reviews, but I am so unhappy and upset that I had to! The material on this jacket is so thin and does not hold up to a normal kid. This was a gift to my son at Christmas, but today it got stuck in the zipper on his backpack. There is a huge hole! I called and it was suggested I use some sort of tape over it! Or, I can mail it back, and in 4 weeks find out whether or not LL Bean will refund or replace it. Meanwhile, it is 9 degrees here in mid-February! His prior down jacket from LL Bean has held up beautifully! I had been a loyal Bean customer for myself and my son, but if a $149 jacket cannot stand up to a 3rd grader, and LL Bean won't stand behind its products, then I doubt I will ever purchase from them again.

In my mind I could not justify giving this jacket to my young son as he would literally freeze himself solid being outside in the northern Maine winter. It's been a few years since I've purchased anything from L.L. Bean and this year was going to be a special one where everyone got a new winter coat. All of the winter coats I got from L.L. Bean including this one are being returned because they're just not going to cut it and for the price we paid for them you think they'd be a much warmer, I don't think whoever rated these coats has been outside in the Maine winter. I can't tell you how disappointed I am being a Mainer in having some pride in L.L. Bean just completely shattered any confidence I have purchasing products from them since apparently they are just a name tag with no quality behind it and just cutting corners in skimping on material. This jacket is the thinnest and most non-suitable winter jacket I have ever seen in my 58 years of existence, you've got to have some serious guts to sell people jackets like these and demand such a high price for such items. I guess the saddest part of the whole experience is that we won't be seeing this money for winter coats until sometime in late January.
