I purchased this coat two years ago and absolutely loved it. It is warm, stylish, and the small fits me perfectly (LL Bean sizes run large). It was appropriate for every activity from shoveling snow to commuting to work to an evening out. A couple of weeks ago I was dismayed to find a small tear in the fabric of the sleeve. I reached out to Customer Service for a repair solution. They recommended a patch tape product . When I applied the patch, it looked like a large piece of Scotch tape on the sleeve--except you can't remove the adhesive. Honestly, the tear looked better.
So now I will have to replace it. It looks too awful to wear except for maybe walking the dog. I'm so disappointed.

I have two 850 jackets that fit great but this coat was too big in the front. It wasn't tailored enough and looked baggy. It fit great in the shoulders and the sleeve length was perfect. I had trouble zipping it. The zipper seemed sticky. It was a plastic zipper and a metal one would probably have been better.
I don't think it was the quality of my jackets. I felt there were shortcuts that lessened the quality of this jacket. I hope LLBEAN continues to have the quality clothing I have been used to but I think the quality is slipping.

I agree with another reviewer that said the contrast inside grey lining makes the coat look very cheap. Returning.

I LOVE this coat. It is light weight but warm, great for recess duty! I read the reviews before purchasing, and while I was slightly worried about the "easy tearing" fabric, I decided to give it a try. I do not go hiking in the woods wearing this jacket, so I thought mine would not rip. WRONG. I have only had this jacket a short time and I have rip (about 1") in the front. I sewed it up so I wouldn't lose all of the down. The hole is sewn up but you can see it of course. So sad.

I tried on a similar coat (the stretch down puffer) in regular misses sizes at an LL Bean store, and loved it -- and was it WARM! But petite sizes fit me best, so I intended to order it online. After reading the reviews for that coat (thank you, other reviewers!) I changed my mind...and instead ordered the 850 ultralight in petite medium and large. The size large fit me beautifully (I like my clothes a little big; the medium would have been fine too if I preferred a closer fit.) The pockets were in just the right place, and the lines of the coat were very flattering. The plum color was beautiful. The zipper worked great. The hood was quite large and not adjustable at the back, but I could have lived with that. True to its name, the coat was ultralight. But it was not warm! At first, I thought maybe the down was compressed in its packaging and would fluff up, but so far it hasn't. It will have to go back, unless I decide I'm willing to keep it for wear in fall/spring only. Very disappointing! It's not going to be warm enough for winter in New England, which is why I would not recommend it. Haven't worn it outside, so can't comment on durability etc.
Dear LL Bean: please start putting some serious down in your outerwear again--or consider making versions suitable for the colder versus the warmer parts of the country! What works for a California winter is not going to work for Vermont. You have winning formulas for cut, fit and size, and a very loyal customer base, not all of whom are (or still are) young athletes. I would happily pay more for a coat like this if it had (1), way more down in it, (2), a better hood --maybe detachable, certainly adjustable--I own LL Bean outerwear with adjustable hoods so you definitely can do this, and (3), a storm flap over the zipper, and inner cuffs on the sleeves, to keep out drafts.

I love it but I disappointed the color I received. I expected it is purple plum and it is beautiful color on website when I ordered it. It's dark brown when I wear it because every told me it's brown. I don't want to return it because it fits me perfect and it's so cozy perfect for California weather

Great quality coat that is extremely warm. Sleeves and shoulders fit wonderfully, which is usually a problem I have in finding a coat as a petite woman. BUT the body of the coat was SO WIDE!! I could've been 8mo pregnant in this coat. Very sad that I had to return.

Sleeves way too short. Please add cuffs with thumb holes. Had to wear long glove to keep warm. Also, zipper sticks at the bottom. Love the two-way zipper. More colors please.

I got this jacket for a Christmas gift a little over a year ago. This jacket is warm and light. With that said I have had to return this jacket 4+ times in the past year because it rips so easily. I wear this jacket on a day to day basis, not rock climbing or hiking. Every time I brought it back I asked for a better option as this jacket isn't durable. I was told to just keep returning it. When I went to return this jacket after having it for TWO MONTHS I was told it didn't meet criteria for return. I paid almost $300 for this jacket and it should hold up for more than two months. I have friends with the same jacket who have had the same issue and have all had to go through multiple. Really frustrated and now don't have a winter jacket because this one is torn all over from brushing up against buildings, walking near a bush, etc. Really not conducive with LL Beans products.

Although the coat is comfortable, light weight and easy to pack, yet warm, the fabric easily ripped. For someone who is not active, it may suffice, but it has ripped from pressure from a shovel handle and from dogs jumping up. I am very active, work in home health care and need something more durable. It ripped in the first month and I have had more small tears since then, covering with duck tape to keep down from escaping. I can get away with it because I live in Vermont, but it's not very stylish. Wish it was more durable. I would recommend it otherwise, but a down coat loses its warmth pretty quickly when holes develop and the down escapes.

Was disappointed when I received my order. Although the size was true to fit the color of the coat was not as pictured online, dark plum, it was rather on the burgundy side. In past purchases I have noticed when an item is back ordered the fabric in the next shipment is of lesser quality.

I followed the sizes recommended by other purchasers. Beyond the sizes listed above, I am a 34B and size 10 pants, 155lbs. The large was HUGE! When I tried it on, I also had on a sweatshirt and puffy vest. Still too big! I exchanged it for a medium, so hopefully that is the right fit for me

I read reviews so I feel like I need to write one. I am always cold. I have two dogs and walk them daily. I need a warm coat because of this. I wish this were warmer. I do like the length and I will have to say I have been out in the rain and it has kept me dry. However, I have had feathers come out which is disappointing. But with seasons warming, which is scary, this coat will probably be fine. I'm a huge LL Bean fan so I don't blame them. Online shopping is tricky.

I really wanted to love this coat. It's so lightweight, and the length is good. But the idea that it is warm enough for cold weather places is a joke. I live in Vermont, and I'm cold in this coat when it is 25 F. above zero and I'm walking briskly. The wind goes right through it, and it is NOT warm. It would probably be great for Washington DC or Philly, but not for New England or the Upper Midwest. I also dislike the vertical pockets with zippers. Because there are no inner cuffs, the zippers scratch your wrists when you put your hands in your pockets.
On the bright side, the coat is flattering and the weight is fine if you are mainly staying in the car, with quick runs into stores from the parking lot. Don't plan for a long walk in the snowy woods in this coat.

The bottom of this jacket flares out which gives it an unflattering look - almost like an A line shape. Overall it was larger than expected. The color is also darker than what it appears on the website.

I love the coat but the sleeves are too short. I have another bean coat of a similar style that fits better. Would love more options for tall like there are for petite

It is lightweight, it fits well, it looks good but it is not warm. I will try it for a few more times but I will probably return it. I am cold when I wear it.

Color, style, and warmth were great. However, I wore this jacket for 2 days before I had to return it due to poor quality. Only wore in my car and to the office and running errands and already had down coming out of the sleeve and on the front. I expected much better quality for the price and just the fact that LL Bean has always served me well over the years. Disappointing.

I have ordered this coat on more than once occasion. The first time, I had the coat for less than a week and my friends puppy (still in the nipping stage) managed to put a small hole in it. Returned, and ordered it in a medium instead of the small (5'0 130 size 4) wrong idea follow the sizing online! The cut (when in your correct size) is feminine and fashionable accentuating the waist. However, this medium coat (which I ordered another small for) too got a hole from everyday use. Somehow my backpack (also ll bean) caught onto the coat, perhaps by a sharp edge of a folder or binder pressing against the (4 years old and well worn) backpack causing a hole in the coat and feathers to fly out. However I keep coming back to the coat because it is so warm and lightweight. I took it to Canada during winter and did not feel cold at all!

I've had this jacket in Ash Heather since Nov 2017. I have several of the bulkier Ultrawarm Jackets and Long Coats, but wanted something more professional looking.
PROS:
Color is great, very neutral brownish grey. It is ultralight and can roll up into a purse/bag if needed. Zipper works well from bottom or top & like the fitted hood. It is comfy but fitted (I'm 5' 4" 145 lbs, medium allows suit jacket or sweater underneath no problem). It's reasonably warm for everyday errands, etc.
CONS:
Strange toggles for hood that poke into my neck. Down escaping from jacket within a week, continues daily. Stitching coming apart in various areas. I'm not particularly hard on my clothes. I've worn this mainly indoors. I've been so pleased with the Ultrawarm Jacket line quality; but this Ultratlite is a big disappointment. Not the quality I expect for that price. I can get a down jacket that falls apart for much cheaper at a big box store.

While I like the cut, the jacket is not nearly as warm as I expected. No way I would wear it if the temperature was below 30.

Once again I am having a problem with the length of misses items. The sleeves on this jacket are much too short. I am 5'8" and the sleeves are not long enough. If you look at patagonia, north face and even columbia your sleeve length is about 2 inches shorter than theirs. I have had to return several outerwear items due to sleeve length. I hope you will consider altering them or making a tall option.

I bought this coat for my daughter who is at college. One week after I sent it, she told me there were feathers coming from the wrist area. Apparently it ripped and she didn't even know it. This leads me to believe it's a thin outer material, if it ripped and she didn't even know. It's an expensive coat to have rip so easily. Disappointing!

The coat was lovely in all ways, but it was just not warm enough for me, especially in the arms. I had to return it.

Did not realize this coat was so shaped. Nice for a slimmer look but at 4'11' this shaped coat waistline falls below my waist and also was so long it hit my knees.
