I wore my new hiking shoes for the first time today. I want to love them, but I can't. They have definite pros and cons.
PROS:
- The traction was appropriate and didn't result in any trail slips on the rocks or gravel.
- The sole is firm enough to prevent excessive foot pain from hours of trekking on a rocky trail.
- I love the (blue) color far more than I thought I would.
- I ordered my regular Salomon size and wore them with my usual merino wool hiking socks. The boots felt true-to-size.
- The height of the boot prevented gravel from getting into my shoes. (That was a usual occurrence with my low hikers.)
CONS:
- The insoles are poorly padded. Compared to my low Salomon hikers, these are shockingly poorly padded. If I continue to use these boots, I'll definitely need to add a better insole.
- The padded collar of the ankle support is stiff. It's not the worst I've experienced, but I'll be feeling the pressure for a couple days. I didn't have them too tightly laced today, and I'm hoping this area breaks in at some point.
- While the boots fit well on level terrain and on the inclines, I had some toe-rubbing on the lateral edges (big and little toes) of the toe-box during the descents. This was surprising, but I think I've escaped any blisters.
If Salomon could make me a pair of hiking boots that combined the Vaya from the insoles up resting atop these soles and traction, I would be super stoked! I hope by eventually adding some aftermarket insoles, I can come close to that wish.

Used this new X ULTRA 4 Mid a few time on the road, trail and irregular icy snow condition and I found it had not good lateral stability and too soft sole. For now on, I will only use it on the street and flat trail. However it is very light

I think I would really love these if they fit. I read the reviews so I made sure to measure my foot and use the sizing chart which put me at my usual hiking boot size 8. I normally am a 7.5 in most other shoes. I think I might need a 7 in these and I haven't bought size 7 shoes since middle school. They aren't available anywhere in my area to try on so I guess it is just take a guess and order, then exchange and then exchange again until I get the right size. I'd love to comment about their performance but I haven't been able to use them yet. Good luck!

Getting the correct size was a challenge but I eventually got the right size in June. I have found the boots so comfortable but now the weathers changing and I'm walking on wet/dew grass I find I have been returning from walks with one wet foot. Very disappointed, unfortunately I've lost my faith in this brand and will be going elsewhere for my next pair of boots.

I bought these boots a month ago and was able to wear them straight away, no blisters, great fit true to size. I have walked through a stream no problem with water getting in until this morning when I walked through a field and my feet got wet. It had not rained it was just morning dew. Not sure why as these are meant to be waterproof. This is very disappointing as I walk everyday with my dog and I need a good pair of waterproof boots.

Seemed to be a bit larger than normal size 10. I own the Ultra 3 in the low version and it fits completely different. Wanted to love them but sending them back.

Got these as a warranty replacement for faulty Salomon Cross Hike Mid GTX shoes. Loved the fit on the Cross Hike but were not waterproof at all. Got these hoping the fit would be similar but they are much roomier in the toe box and longer. Unfortunately the half size down was too small. I'm disappointed in the huge disparity between the two half sizes. I have owned three pairs of various Salomon hiking shoes and have always been a size 7.5. This pair is way bigger. Now I'm stuck with a pair that is a poor fit.

I didn't take them for a hike, but for anyone who needs more support for their arch and ankle I wouldn't get these. I have flat feet and these shoes just collapsed at the arch. So I got the x ultra 3 that has better arch support.

Would rather exchange for a smaller size (8.5) but item is not exchangeable? These are huge, maybe mislabeled? I have older pair of the same boot and love them. Why are they non-exchangeable?

this is so annoying! I've had salomons for years, always size 8.5, which is size 39-40 in European. This pair is 8.5, but 40 2/3 european and they are too big.

I wanted waterproof boots so that I can use them to walk through the horse pasture in the morning for chores and then head out with the dogs for our daily 1-2 mile hike (on flat ground) and also use them on my moderate hikes (3-6miles) 3-6 x a month.
Unfortunately, from the start my feet would get wet going through the grass in the morning and both boots started breaking down on the top within the first month.
By month 3 they were so broken down that not only water, but also dirt would get in.
You will see by the photo. The tread is still great but I will be throwing them away due to the dirt/mud getting in.
I would expect this from a $40-60 boot, not a $190 boot.

I have been travelling South America for 8 months now and have completed over 70 hikes/treks with these boots.
Good points - they're extremely comfortable and require minimal breaking in (if any). The grip with the sole is very good and the flexibility in the boot allows me to hop around mountains easily.
Bad points - the manufacturing is terrible. After just 3 months of wear, the seams were compromised by the creasing in the toe of the boot. Eventually this meant that the stitching came undone and holes formed on each side of the crease, meaning they were no longer waterproof. I received a new pair as compensation and noticed immediately the stitching on the upper inside was already coming apart before I'd even worn them. I've worn this new pair for around 10 hikes now and can see the creasing issue looks like it'll be a problem again a few months down the line. I'll update with progress.
Overall - I'd recommend these for light hiking use (i.e. if you only go on a few gentle hikes a year) or if you want a pair of waterproof dog walking boots. I wouldn't recommend these for regular mountain use. They simply don't hold up to the strain like other sturdier boots as the integrity of the boot has been compromised for flexibility.

Salomon boots are well made and I have worn out several pairs. However I returned the latest purchase. The tongue was much smaller than previous pairsl and I didn't like that they eliminated one upper lace hook. Picture is deceiving. As a result couldn't lace tightly enough and they were uncomfortable.

Loved the look of them but when I received them I found that when walking, the shoe folds and digs into my foot. The sizing is correct but just didnt fit my foot shape correctly and was very uncomfortable. Had to return.

Boot fits well, is comfortable on long hikes but it needs another hook at top for laces. With just one hook, the laces keep loosening even with a double bow.

Good enough fit comfort-wise. Although material is listed as Goretex, these hiking boots are definitely NOT waterproof.

The material on the top of the toe is very stiff and the crease it creates is painful on the top of my foot. I keep hoping that it will soften with more use but it hasn't yet and is very uncomfortable to wear. Also, why can't Solomon use a decent quality insole at this price point instead of the thin piece of paper they pass off as a foot bed.

I have not had these long, I have worn them over the winter months and done my utmost to look after them more than I have ever looked after any of my previous boots. However the fabric is already showing wear and fraying at the toe crease. This happened to my previous pair which were the older style but they lasted years before they did this, these have not even got me through a couple of winter months. I am disappointed with quality, I feel like it has gone downhill which is a shame as I have always had Salomon shoes and boots and find them extremely comfortable but I can't afford to buy a new pair every couple of months.

I bought a pair of these boots late last year and within a few weeks they were leaking at the toe crease. However, the customer service department were fine about sending a voucher for a replacement pair. So, I was forced to buy another pair of Salomons and went for the same boots in half a size smaller. Having previously worn a pair of wide speed cross and seeking advice and trying shoes on in my local shop, I have found Salomon's usual width too narrow so went for the wide fitting. The wide fitting, plus the placement of the reinforcements, means that there is a substantial crease at the bend point resulting in bruising on the top of both of my big toes. My little toes are also both bruised.
I'm so disappointed as these boots are just what I was looking for in terms of weight and technical detail and were recommended by a friend. I was prepared to overlook the lightness of the colour (they looked rubbish after one walk on the North Yorkshire Moors) but they have been an expensive mistake. Back to my heavy but reliable Meindls.

Unfortunately the quality is not the same as before. I used to have previous versions for many years. They fitted perfectly but not these ones. Theses are made with cheap materials, not hold the ankle properly. There's are not hiking boots. Very disappointed.

I had to replace my old Salomon walking boots as they had almost fallen apart - I'd had them 7 years and they have been outstanding in all that time and they fitted like a glove. I didn't realise that Adidas now own Salomon but on receipt of my new footwear it seems obvious as they certainly don't have to hiking boot quality of my last pair - more of a trainer feel to them than a serious boot, unfortunately. They're also far too wide in the foot now (why?!) so instead of them hugging my feet, my feet now slide from side to side and I now have sores on the top of my foot from rubbing following my first foray in them. I'm really very disappointed in them. What a waste of my hard earned money.
