Bought my first pair to go hiking and loved them right out of the box. There so comfortable that I wear them as an everyday shoe. I bought another pair to keep as hiking shoes, there the best shoe Ive bought in a long time.

I loved the shoes overall but had to return them because the sides of the shoe below the ankle dig into my ankle. They put material too close to the side front of the ankle. This problem wont affect people with tall feet and higher ankles, but for those whose ankles arent as high, it makes the shoes unusable. Bummer.

These shoes are not as supportive as the x ultra 3, which Ive been wearing various versions of since 2015. These shoes seem more focused on design over function. Please bring back the 3!!

Let me preface this by saying I've been wearing X Ultra 3's since 2016. I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with X ultra 3's in addition to being a daily shoe for me as I spend alot of time outdoors not hiking. So several thousand miles of testing in every region of the United States and some in Canada. The X Ultra 4's are noticeably softer and more flexible than the X Ultra 3's, specifically in the mid foot area. I prefer to have a stiffer shank when carrying a 30-40 lb load. They honestly just feel like soft tennis shoes with some tread on the bottom. As far as the tab on the back of the ankle I haven't found it to be a problem with rubbing but I typically wear micro crew socks that come to base of calf. The 4's simply will not last as long as the 3's and don't have as much underfoot protection on rocky trails. I could easily get 1000 trail miles out of the 3's. I honestly don't understand changing up the 3's. I bought as many pairs of 3's as I could after trying the 4's out. Here's hoping they go back to the 3rd generation.

As a long-time loyal customer of Salomon shoes, Im very disappointed in the X Ultra, as the upper construction around the toe box started breaking down within a month of purchase from light use. I'm really surprised Salomon is making such a poor quality shoe. A Warranty claim had an unsatisfactory result.

I had owned four pairs of the Ultra 3, it was a great shoe. Then you discontinued it and replaced it with X Ultra 4 worst shoes i have ever owned. The tongue was not sewed in place and would slide all the way to the side. I did a warranty on them and Salomon kept changing the requirement to get my money back, it took months.

I bought this in April, 2022 and the soles are already wearing through on the heels and forefoot. The rubber compound is soft, which may be the reason for the premature wear. Ive had other Salomons that Ive had for over six years that have better soles than this shoe. I like Salomons but highly dissapointed in the quality of this one. Is there a resole option for this shoe since I still like the fit and would like to continue wearing this shoe?

I love this shoe!!!! It fits well and is pretty comfy. BUT, the glue/adhesive is failing near the inner toes from the rubber to the fabric. Also, I thought it is waterproof and it is not. Bc the shoe is failing after a few weeks of use I will be getting a new shoe to replace it. I had the Ultra 3 before this and it was a solid 2 year boot that I'd buy again if it was available. The 4 is a bit to tough to get on and off and the glue failing so soon is a killer for me. Looking at other brands now after being an only Salomon person for 15 + years.

This is my second pair of ultras and they are the greatest shoes Ive ever had. They are so comfortable and cushy, and so versatile. I wear them around on a daily basis, or they can be used for hiking. They have a waterproof sole, and the tread grips perfectly on ice and snow. They are also super light and flexible and look fantastic in either a work situation or at the gym. I will continue to buy this model for a long time to come.

I've been wearing the X Ultra for around 7 years I believe. I loved the 3s, but they were a tad narrow for me. This new 4 is way wider and feels like my foot is swimming. That being said, I also have the goretex version, and they are a proper fit for me. Maybe the goretex fills in some space. I also found that these feel like they have a thinner outsole, so you feel the ground a lot more, which I don't really like since this is my more heavy duty low cut shoe. Overall though it's a good shoe, but just know that it will feel a lot wider compared to the goretex version, or the X Ultra 3.

I bought the X Ultra 4 Low about a month before a 35-mile backpacking trip in Utah. I wore them probably 10 times on training hikes before the trip, carrying a weighted pack on mostly flat dirt roads, and some multi-floor stair workouts. Right out of the box these shoes felt great. From my research, I was aware that there may be some discomfort at the top of the shoe at the ankle. I felt it slightly at first, but after wearing a couple of times, that was NOT a problem for me at all. I bought one size larger than my "street" shoes, and using a thin liner sock and good padded hiking socks, the fit and comfort were perfect. I just completed the Utah trip. We had some mud, some steep climbs, some rocks, a little of everything, and these shoes were great on the 5-days of hiking with loaded backpacks. Stable, grippy soles. Comfortable and light, yet supportive. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the construction. In my month of training BEFORE the backpacking trip, the very thin rubber toe cap of one shoe came loose from the mesh fabric, so there is about a 2 inch "pocket" that catches dirt and debris. Again, these shoes had great performance through the 5 days in Utah, and I plan to keep wearing them, but I am disappointed with the lack of durability so far.

Serial Salomon owner (the only brand of hiking shoes / boots I buy) and this is the first time I've been disappointed. They're comfy, feel sturdy to walk in, but sadly not impressed. First of all, they really are not water tight - not ideal hiking in England. Since January 24 I've done 200km in them and one of the lace things has broken, the S logo has come off the rigth shoe and I've worn a hole in the lining by the heel on both shoes. Hugely disappointed.

The overall look of the shoe is nice, but the design change in the ankle/tongue area on the Ultra 4 was not comfortable for me.

The Ultra 3 was comfortable. The Ultra 4 is a different shoe in a bad way. The plastic side structure pushes against side of my feet. Overall it feels like a cheaper plastic toy shoe compared to the Ultra 3. I wanted to love them but not going to happen.

Was looking to replace my XCrest that I have been buying for years. Apparently they are discontinued. These don't have nearly the arch support that the XCrest had. In fact I have put them on the shelf as my feet hurt after an 8 hour day. Won't be buying these again. :(

I bought these for a thru-hike. 100 miles and a week in, they started rubbing my feet very painfully around the ankles and heels. I tried wearing another pair of socks and putting on moleskin, but nothing worked. They seem like an alright shoe, but they do work for my feet.

They are hot with regular athletic socks. There's a weird tension on the inside of the right foot and no clue of the purpose of the speed laces.

Bought a pair of X Ultra 4 hiking shoes to replace my X Ultra 3s. The fit is entirely different than the 3. The sides are bulky and bunched up while just standing in the shoes. Makes me fearful of getting blisters should I try them on a long hike or trails with significant climbs and descents. Even when cinching the laces tight, the sides of the shoes appear loose and feel baggy (which is a weird descriptor for a shoe). The tongue seems shorter than the 3 also. Once the laces are tightened, it's difficult to stow the extra in the tongue pocket due to the pocket opening being too low toward the toe of the shoe. Had I known what these would be, I would have shopped like crazy to find a leftover pair of X Ultra 3s. The 4 is quite a disappointment. Hope the next gen builds on the strengths of the 3. Pass on this model if you're able.

The shoe is very nice out of the box, however in around 8 months of street usage, the shoe developed cracks making the waterproofing useless.

I owned two pairs of Ultra 3s. It's pretty much all I wear. I bought them a long time ago when trying out shoes for a long Europe hiking trip and fell in love with them. When I needed a new pair, the Ultra 3s were no longer made so I bought a pair of Ultra 4s. The 3s were sturdier and my foot felt more secure. But by far the biggest issue I have is with the tongue of the Ultra 4. The tongue of the Ultra 3s would stay up so I could easily slide my foot in and go (yes, I'm lazy and always in a hurry). The Ultra 4s have a completely different tongue material and it always falls down, so I now have to pull the tongue up to put my foot in the shoe, every. single. time! Such a small thing, but omg, it's a pretty annoying inconvenience to do this daily when I never had to do it for years with the Ultra 3. Please, I beg you, update your amazing shoe and fix this issue!

If you wear these for a while, you may get an abrasion on top of your foot from where the shoe tongue is sewn on. They just won't do.
