I have tried a LOT of shoes over the last couple of years in search for the perfect backpacker. I've tried most variants of trail runners to boots, from mesh to gore-tex. My only main condition, outside of fit, was that the heel stack not be too high. These are some of the highest I've tried, but I won't knock Salomon for that, it's an industry standard practice, and Salomon is great about listing the drop on all their shoes. Despite the high heel in this boot, it was by far the best fit for me over all their other products. Even compared to the X Ultra 3, these are lighter, more comfortable, and just as supportive. The fit is pretty great, I usually wear a size 14 (13.5 would be perfect, but it's not a focus of shoe manufactures), and this boot is the perfect length (just enough room past the toe to avoid front pressure on downhills). Oddly, I tried their shoe fit guide and it recommended a 12.5 for me, which positively would never ever work, and nor would a 13. I'm glad I didn't go the recommended route. For those reviewers that found the boot too large, perhaps they're used to shoe brands that run too small (as some of the other Salomons I tried did). The 3 Ultra Mid was a touch shorter, but my biggest problem with that boot was the cramped foot box (both in width and in box height). This shoe took care of that problem, and I actually found it to be the roomiest Salomon in the toe box of any of their shoes (great for me, but maybe not for others). I only have a couple of gripes. For one, the heel is too large, with a barely-there heel cup and rough edges/material at the base. It's been a long time since a shoe has chewed up the base of my foot like this, but I'm trying to ride through it in hopes I soften the shoe back there or callous up my feet, because this is otherwise a magnificent shoe. My second issue is with the forefoot, which has almost no cushion to speak of. On harder terrain, I find the front of my feet tend to get sore and tired out. The heavier drop (11mm) exaggerates this problem by putting more weight on the front of the foot. Since the toe box is so accommodating, I'm going to try and add a half insert under the insole to increase padding and decrease the forward pressure. One final note in response to another review I read. Before these, I bought a pair of the X 3 Ultra Mids, and they developed a highly annoying "pop" feel and sound somewhere in the front half of the boot, on both the left and right boots. I of course returned them, but was worried these would develop the same problem. But 40 miles in, no problem. I expect if you have that same problem, exchange the boot immediately, as it could be a manufacturing defect.

so far very comfortable. Only issue is they make a loud popping sound with every step. Comes from the area near the bottom of the laces.

Really likes these but while the left boot held up fine, the right one didn't keep my feet dry on my daily walks through wet grass with my dog. Disappointing but needed to return them.

Very happy with the roomy toe box with just the regular width size. Good grippy tread and so far well wearing. Do not like the tongue as it gets pushed out when lacing up. Would be much better if atttached all the way up. Also the top speed lace tie points are directly where the ankle sits and there is no or minimal padding there so an uncomfortable pressure point if boots laced tightly. Shouldn't have to use corn padding or similar to protect the ankle.

I like the shoes but they're very narrow when I asked about a wide I was told it was offered in black but would prefer it be offered in all colors.

I bought these boots again because I like that they are light weight, waterproof and fairly durable. My girlfriend bought me a pair about 2 years ago, but unfortunately after about 18 months the seams of the boot began to separate. They were no longer water proof and the soles began to separate from the boot and wear significantly. I regret not saving the boots or taking photos before I donated them to a church, however I know I will do the same to these boots in about 18 months. I wear them everyday and definitely push them to the max a lot, but I wish they lasted more than 18 months. I had a similar pair of North Face boots that lasted about 3 times as long [5 years] but they were sadly discontinued.

I went for a wide fit half size up as my last pair of Salomon boots were very tight ..I'm finding these much too big even with two pairs of socks

I've had these for about a month and they fit well. Not to happy with the lacing, would have preferred the Kevlar laces. The tab at the top rear of the shoe above the ankle keeps my pants from covering the back of the shoe, and I'm not talking about the nylon pull tab. Kind of annoying actually. Overall, sadly they are not one of my go to shoes.

Ehhh I love the brand. I rock with them. Average 10-15k steps a day. Work with warehouse stuff. Just be careful with the tops. Kind of bummed. My last ones lasted longer. But just got new. Maybe file warranty claim

Overall they are ok, not as good as their predecessor the X-Ultra 3. I have owned speedcross, X-Ultra and Quest that have all been great but After just under a year of use there is some stitching coming undone and they have lost their waterproofness which has never happened. Boots were also much stiffer than the x-ultra 3 requiring an extensive and uncomfortable break in period. Once broken in they were decently comfortable, materials and durability arent on par with the X-ultra 3 for sure. For the price and solomon name I would expect more.

This is my first pair of Salomon's, and, so far, I'm not a huge fan. I've only worn them a couple times, but they seem to need a lot of break in time. It's been awhile since I've bought new shoes that require a lot of break in. At the moment, the uppers are stiff above the ankle and dig in a little bit. The crease point over the toes also digs in. However, they seem like they'd be pretty durable. With this experience, it would be unlikely I'd buy Salomons again, but if they improve after breaking in, I'll update my review if that's possible.

Solid boot. I wear them a lot for normal everyday not just rucking. I've put 230 miles o them in about 6 months and the heel tread has worn through. Would not call them heavy duty. Ankle support is decent. Lateral support is average to below average. Good boot for kicking around and normal hiking or rucking. Not your technical boot for super aggressive terrain

Purchased my 4th pair this fall, I have hiked for 5 or 6 seasons in GTX Mids. Sadly, in this pair, there is a seam in the liner that cuts across my metatarsals and makes wearing them on all day hikes a no go. Not sure whether to send them back and try again or give up on this brand all together.

overall great shoe! waterproof, good quality and great fit. One big problem I have is that the toe box of the shoe makes a loud "pop" sound EVERY time I take a step (only my right shoe). It is super annoying when going for a long hike and takes a lot of my enjoyment out of the shoes :(

Seriously love the features and looks of this shoe. Unfortunately, I have a pain point on top of my left foot when I walk. I'm seriously hoping that in time the boot breaks enough for the pain to go away. If it does, I will absolutely upgrade this review to five stars!

The soft cloth mesh comes to a narrow point, surrounded by the cut stiff shoe material. The stiff material rubs the mesh away and reveals the white goretex lining undearneath. These areas need to be widened to stop the rubbing. The wear happens on both feet in the exact same places.

I looked forward to receiving my X ULTRA $ MID WIDE GORE_TEX boots to replace my old Salomon boots. Unfortunately, although I ordered exactly the same size as my previous boots, which fit perfectly, the new boots were 1/2 inch shoeter and 1/2 inch narrower than the old ones. Needless to say they didn't fit so I had to return them.

I've had these shoe's for approximately one month and they are definitely not waterproof! Toes got wet from walking in dew covered grass. Otherwise the shoes fit well and provide good support.

I was looking for a light weight hiker to replace a La Sportiva boot. The x ultra 4 mid looked right on paper but feels cheap and minimal in comparison. It doesn't feel like its going to fall apart just lacks support, padding or structure underfoot. It's a good mountain bike shoe so I'll keep it but hard to imagine this as any sort of serious hiking shoe.

Great quality, comfortable, true to size, great traction. I live in the Rockies in steep country. I found the soles too soft. You can feel the rocks etc underfoot and. When going up hill, your toes bend back more than they should. Great for flatter, smoothish trail hiking. If your going off trail in steeper country I wouldn't recommend

I love that these are so lightweight and the break in time is minimal, however they are not very durable. after 2 months of use while day hiking they started to leak around the toes. the tread is thin and wears out quickly. The laces are weird, they tend to tighten up on your feet and then the top part of the lace gets loose. the thin soles are not well padded and rocks are easily felt through the boot soles.

Wore them six times, five around town to break in and went on one hike. The Gor-Tex lining started separating from the left inside toe box and was making a crinkling noise with every step. Returned and can't recommend to purchase. Very disappointed. Zappos has excellent customer service though and took them back as defective even though they were worn very lightly.

I wanted a replacement for my excellent Salomon Quest Mid shoe (which has sadly been discontinued) but the Ultra didn't fit the bill. It is a lower profile shoe - I would rate it as a low-profile shoe. Another omission is the lock lug on the lacing system for the Quest, which I loved but which is not present on the Ultra. Overall I was disappointed because, although it is a good shoe, the Ultra Mid is no replacement for the Quest Mid, and Salomon have no other mid-profile offerings

I have used these shoes on 20 hikes. The mid-height idea is good but the full-height hikers and low-top shoes from Salomon are more comfortable. The mid-height shoes dig into the shin whereas the full hikers support the shin/ankle without digging in. The low-top Solomons don't support the ankle but are more comfortable. I like the concept of a mid-height shoe, but the execution is just not there.
