Very Comfortable Shoes. Have worn them for breaking in and for 5K Mud Run. Only thing I am noticing so far is that the tongues are very thin and cut LOW, so I am hoping they don't irritate, with their edge poking me.

This is a good shoe, fast and comfortable. I do keep hitting rocks roots maybe until i get used to the height of the shoe. Doesn't need a rock plate because of the cushioning but for me could do with being a 5-6 mm heel to toe drop so i added a small piece of insole in the heel to give me what i need. Good room in the toe box and locks down well for steep rocky descents.

My main use for trail runners is for hiking. The atr was my favorite. It had one major flaw. The tread. It would wear out to quickly and was slippery when wet. The mafate solves this with the vibram sole. Very aggressive and good when jumping from rock to rock when wet. Same overall feel as the atr, maybe a little more cushion. The tongue is more minimalist than the atr but still comfortable on long days. More stable than the speed goats. I would roll my ankle in those. The only flaw in the mafate and the reason for 4 stars is the price, becouse you tend to replace trail runners more frequently when used for hiking and the extra 50 bucks starts to add up. Mafate are my new go to trail runners

I have worn Speedgoat's up until the latest version where the changes took the shoe from a trail shoe that took me the length of the Appalachian Trail to a shoe I can no longer wear. After trying other Hoka trail shoes I landed on these. Out of the box they have a similar fit to Speedgoat's. Extremely comfortable upper, good room in the toe box, comfortable lock at the heel and traps the fore foot properly to prevent forward movement. Not a negative, the shoe does feel slightly narrow from Speedgoat's, but I am finding that this is a slightly better fit. Did 12 miles first time out without issues and another 12 miles my next time out. Overall I am thinking these will be solid replacements for my Speedgoat's. For me with Hoka running shoes, I always go a half size up from my true size for best fit

The fit and feel is average whereas my previous Hokas were a five star. They had woven- like shoe laces. The laces on this model could not have been cheaper than any shoe I've owned.

I have been using the Mafate line since it first came out. It is my favorite shoe except for the Clifton 1. This Speed 3 is too narrow. If you hold it up to the Evo Mafate 2 you can see it's not as wide. That Evo Mafate 2 was a great shoe.

I've got probably 40 miles in these shoes so far. All of them have been on steep rock/gravel roads. The outsole is super rugged and has great traction. Vibram mega grip never disappoints. The midsole I would describe as dense. The shoes are really stiff so far which is great for hill climbing. In a shoe like the speed goat my feet tend to sink in the midsole which has a tendency to diminish energy return. So for hill climbing these are great. The shoe still provides good cushion for the decent back down the mountain. When running down hill I tend to land on my heels and the Mafates provide good cushion. Now for my complaints.. The tongue on this shoe is way too short and way too thin. If you like to use the runners knot or racers knot then the laces are likely going to be directly on your sock. in addition to this, the upper is supper stiff around the top of the eyelet chain and I can feel the upper digging in to the top of my feet especially around the top of the tongue. On my second or third run I actually had to untie the shoes and finish the last few miles with my laces flopping around because the uppers were causing excessive bruising and pain on the top of my foot. I'm hoping the uppers soften up and the midsole becomes more lively as I get closer to 100 miles. As it is now I probably wouldn't buy these shoes again because they are quite pricey and not very comfortable. Next time around I'll probably go back to the SGs.

They're great but after wearing Altras I'm really missing the stability and wide toe box that provides a natural feel.

Good fit, roomy toe box, well padded, good traction. Shoe tongue too short, laces may slip off the tongue over the socks.

This is my second pair. I immediately noticed the width of the shoe has shrunk a full half inch. This makes the shoe feel less stable on the trail increasing risk of ankle injury. Why did you do this Hoka??? Why did you do this and not mention the design change? And the price went up

Great off road running shoes, beautiful design so far feels very durable The fit not as perfect as my other Hoka running shoes and the exterior could be better by making it dust or sand proof

Mafete is narrow. Bandi 7 is excellent. Great plush cushion and regular width is perfect. So good I bought 3 Bandi 7s

I like the looks of the show but the insole and the outsole weren't as padded as I thought they would be.

About 30 bucks. Otherwise I don't see a huge difference. The Mafate may be a little more grippy with the traction. Otherwise they'll both get the job done.

The 3 is too wide in the toebox causing my foot to slide to the side on sloped trailsdangerously so. The laces are too short. The to gu is too stiff digging into the front of my ankle. The heel is too sunken. I'm now dealing with achilles tendinitis. Thanks. And they're just not as pretty as the lime and turquoise in the 2! Plus, idk why, but if I don't have them laced tightly enough, sometimes I fall off the high platform sole as if I were wearing g a flip flop. So disappointed. What a waste of a lot of money.

Really want the Eve series back. EVO speedgoat or EVO mafate these fit perfectly and provided great breathability. Also the tongue was perfect. Have owned 22 pairs of Hoka's trying to figure out what is next.

Needed a replacement for my worn out (4th pair) of EVO Mafate's but really disappointed in the breathability. I run in heat and through streams so need them to be breathable. The Matrix was way better. Wish Hoka could be sustainable and not impair the performance. Sole is the same Vibram sole. Midsole feels slightly firmer which is a negative. have old knees and they need Hoka cushion.

Inner lining ripped on all 4 sides. Bunches up when you slide your foot in. What a shame for one of their most expensive shoes!

The inner lining in the middle of the sides seems to be torn away from the owner lining towards the back. It's that way on both sides of both shoes. so when you put the shoes on, that lining bunches up against the sides of your feet. uncomfortable!
I'd also recommend:
Other Hoka styles don't have this problem. Weird that the defect is in one of their most expensive s

I am a hard core trail runner that trenches through all terrain, and I have always been a minimalistic shoe wearer. I felt like I needed a little more support for my knees so I decided to try out the Mafate Speed 3 since they were rated so highly. I figured there would be some getting use to, but despite wearing them this long and working them on many terrains I absolutely hate them. They are just simply uncomfortable, and they aren't living up to the ratings in my opinion. I had held out hope that I would eventually get use to them, but that has yet to happen. I had planned to send them back to you until I slipped while running in them, badly injured myself, and scuffed the shoes to the point that I'm sure you won't accept them back as a return. I suppose these shoes were only intended to run across dry gravel on a flat trail versus all terrain as ranked. I'm ranking them at a 2 because they are stillgood looking shoes. Otherwise, they failed my expectations.
