I like comparative reviews, so here I'll compare the Mafate Speed 3 (MS3) to the Speedgoat 4 (SG4). I use these for running and hiking on steep/technical/off-camber terrain. The surface is typical of So Cal trails: Rock (incl. conglomerate) and baked clay covered by a thin layer of dust, sand and gravel. TLDR: My ideal trail shoe would be the SG4 with the midsole material and stack height of the MS3. FIT: The SG4 is true-to-size for a HOKA. The MS3 runs longI needed to go 1/2-size down, to a 7. [This may be specific to the smaller sizes.] The SG4's low forefoot helps hold the foot better than the MS3. I can get equivalent lockdown with the MS3 but, even though it's a 1/2-size smaller, its high forefoot means I have to crank the laces harder, compromising comfort. [The MS3's forefoot height probably helps comfort for long runs on moderate terrain, where lockdown isn't as important.] TRACTION: SG4 wins. They both use Vibram Megagrip lugs. But the SG4's Vibram lugs run front-to-back, while the MS3 has a big gap under the arch that uses midsole foam lugs only. IMO, for both safety and performance, all HOKA trail shoes should have outsoles as serious as the SG4's. MIDSOLE: MS3 wins. Its midsole has a wonderful combination of responsiveness, shock absorption, and comfort. I also like that it doesn't taper too sharply at the front, instead maintaining nice thickness for forefoot landings during descents. The SG4's midsole isn't bad, but it's firmer (less comfortable underfoot), less responsive, and less shock absorbing; my knees can tell the difference. STABILITY: SG4 wins. Both have uppers that are sufficiently structured to keep the foot centered on technical terrain (the MS3 is a big improvement over the Evo Mafate 2, whose upper has too much lateral stretch for technical terrain). However, the SG4's lower stack and wider forefoot base (its midsole flares laterally at the forefoot to help prevent ankle roll) gives it better stability.

First off, 2nd pair of Hoka's for me (Challenger ATR5). These are super soft and plush just like the Challengers but the tread on the sole is significantly tougher and more aggressive. I have a 9.5 in both and found the Mafate to be a bit longer but nothing uncomfortable. Overall, I love these shoes and would definitely buy them again.

I just started hiking with a little trail running as well. These are perfect. I was a little skeptical about the sizing. I'm between a 10.5 and 11.0, but these fit like a glove right out of the box. Really no break in period on them. These are like pillows on your feet, very light for the amount of cushioning as well.

Amazing shoe! I have Planter Facitis and this is the only shoe I don't have to wear inserts with. Look great! Super LIGHT! Awesome style! Can't get a better color. 1 of a kind

Not only are these shoes, attractive looking, but they are comfortable too. Traction is amazing and grip the surface as you're walking I tend to walk on grass but then that turns into pavement and the comfort level never diminishes. I feel that this is an excellent purchase to suit my needs and we recommend this shoe to anybody.

I bought these for my husband, they are his 6th pair. Needless to say he loves Hokas. He had surgery on one foot for a neuroma which has been giving him pain for a long time. He is able to wear his Hokas without pain. They do run a bit small so I buy a half size bigger.

Just tried this sneaker for the first time and it's been everything I've hoped for. This is my 2nd pair of Hoka sneakers on top of the 3 Hoka sandals I own. It's hard to switch back to anything else. I'm about a 10.5 --11 with a little on the wider side foot, but this fits perfect. Thanks!

My second pair of Mafate’s. They fit perfectly just like the first pair. These are great trail running shoes especially on the rocky terrain of the Arizona desert. Prior to the Mafate I’ve had six pair of Speedgoats. I love the speed goats but Hoka has made The toebox area too big on the new ones.

I love these shoes. I switched from Brooks to Hoka because of the colors and comfort of the shoes. These shoes are great so far. Soft and supportive, and decently priced. I am on my feet all day long and these shoes are great all day.

Great looks Robust Construction A great shoe for those who need a lower volume toe box but want a little space for your toes. Tongue may be a sticking. point as it is likely to rub against the ankle.
