After an initial trial run at a Hoka One One demo I believed these shoe would be a nice shoe for my road runs. The shoe was soft and responsive. The toe box was wide and made the shoe comfortable. However much like Hokas I've had in the past, the grip/tread is very slick. Though great in dry conditions-the tread becomes slick with any slight sign of moisture. The shoe again was fine but it was not enough for me to make them my new shoe. *I will note that though I did not enjoy them I was able to return them after a few weeks for a full refund. The return was quick and effortless. I was very pleased with my experience with Hoka just sold on the shoe.

Stats - 45ish Male, 185(ish)lbs, running 5ks - marathons for over 20 years in the midwest heat and cold. I've given this shoe enough time to see if it would let me down - but it continues to impress! As a longtime Clifton wearer, it's been an on again, off again relationship. Fell in love with the Clifton 1, enjoyed the 3, 6, and 7, but was not looking forward to the 8 as much as I hoped. I use the Rincon 1 for treadmill and track repeats - and I like it well enough...but the Mach 4 seems to fill the hole left since Clifton 1 has disappeared. Pros - It's light, adequately cushioned for a heavier runner, and fits snug enough that everything stays in place. Tongue is nice and thin, which I personally like. Longest run in this shoe has been 10 miles, but no red flags yet. Bonus - Hoka started putting reflective material back on their shoes - which to me is a "no-brainer" for additional safety. Cons - upper material feels a little thick to the touch, but not so noticeable while running. Durability - I have just under 100 miles on the shoes and noticing some significant wear on the impact areas of soles. Could be prevented by adding some blown rubber to a few key areas. Also should note many of my runs are on gravel roads which will also contribute additional wear as this is a road shoe, most likely intended for pavement, but has worked great on gravel. Bottom line - if you're looking for a "do everything" shoe, and have enjoyed many of the versions of the Clifton and Rincon, you will most certainly love this shoe...I know I will be buying a second pair when the time comes. Kudos to Hoka for their success!

Bought this shoe for speedwork and tempos. Im 6"1 and 192 lbs. 54 years young. Still like to compete at 5 and 10 ks. with the once a year half marathon. This shoe, the Mach 4, has a great responsive feel when picking up the pace. im a little iffy about carbon fiber plated shoes but this shoe mekes me want to try one of Hokas carbon plated racing flats.

The Mach 4 is the most comfortable, springy, multi-faceted running shoe I've worn. It's balance between cushioned midsole and firm outsole is supreme, however, the rubberized EVA-foam outsole wears away quicker than anything I've seen before. 2 months and about 50 miles in and it's completely bald and wearing away on the outer heel of both shoes as well as just above the mid-foot area. For the price, a running shoe simply should not wear away in that amount of time or with that amount of usage. The perfect running shoe would be this with some rubber on the bottom...maybe the Mach 5 will deliver that?

I have run about 60 miles in this show from longish runs (10 miles) to shorter runs (6 miles) and have loved them. Great lockdown, good energy return, and great protection. The only issue I had was the outsole seemed to wear out pretty quick in a couple of spots. I returned the first pair and tried a second pair to have the same issue. I have a pair Saucony Endorphin Speed that don't have this issue, so I don't think it's me... I love the shoe otherwise and it has not affected its performance at all, so I will keep them and see how they hold up with more miles.

A super light shoe that provides a comfortable ride. I usually land on my forefoot to midfoot and the cushioning of the shoe is nice. The rubberized EVA outsole is not too durable. Run in the shoe for about 30 miles and patterns on the outsole are disappearing. The bouncy feel also dies out a little bit. But still a nice runner.

Its a great shoe, very light, responsive and confortable. It's my first Hoka and I'm very satisfied, this is a light shoe made for easy, steady and tempo runs. Don't expect it to last for more than 500 miles, the outsole wears very quickly but you won't regret buying. Recommended

I have only taken them out on a real hike once and had a bit of pain on my left foot where I have a bit of a callous so I'll say more after my next one.

I came from some Nike Pegasus 37s which I liked for the most part. The Mach 4s were a bit stiff for the first few runs, but they've broken in and feel good now. They aren't as mind blowing as I expected them to be, but they wear well, my feet aren't tired after a run, they feel good when I put them on, so I'm happy!

The Mach is a fast shoe, break in time longer than other Hoka shoes I have worn. The tongue abraded my lower shin and the heel pocket blistered my heel, both resolved quickly as shoes broke in, great space in toe box ( other shoes have given me problems here) The Mach 4 doesn't seem to be the best daily jogger or easy pace distance shoe, but on speed days it's amazing.

I can't remember a shoe that has come out recently that had as much hype before it was released as this one. I ordered these on the first day they were available and received them on a Friday. I couldn't wait to try them out so I ran a quick 4 miles on Saturday morning with the temperature around 40 degrees. Typically, when the temperature is in this range my feet getting hot is the least of my worries. After only 4 miles my feet were warm, which I found to be really odd. I took them out the next day for a 12 mile long run with the temperature around 50 degrees. I couldn't wait to get these off of my feet when I finished because my feet were so hot. The third run was intervals with the temp around 70 degrees. This time I wore the thinnest pair of socks I own. That helped tremendously, but my feet were still hot. I considered returning these because the upper does not breath at all, but in the end decided to keep them because there is enough upside to this shoe. Pros: Light Weight Cushioning - These can soak up the miles and your legs will still feel fresh. Durability - I have 80 plus miles on these and they still look brand new. I feel that these should hold up for 300 to 400 miles. Versatility - These work for speed days, long runs, and really anything in between. Cons: The upper has little to no breathability. I live in the South and the temperatures will be really hot soon. If you live in an area where the temps get really hot in the summer, you might want to keep this in mind. This was the primary reason I gave these 4 Stars. If you need a wide toe box, this is not the shoe for you.

I ran like 20 miles total in these about two weeks, and they can take a pounding with a good cushion system. They're pretty good but don't grip as well, slippery sometimes and I catch my self having to watch my balance on certain sidewalks.

A true 10 in men's and the Mach4 needs at least a half size more. I gave up as I'm tired of the returns but be forewarned. If you're a New Balance/Saucony runner, the forefoot area will feel tight around the foot. Buyer beware.
I'd also recommend:
New Balance, Saucony, OR Hoka Ahari 5 (those are true to size)

I was really stoked to try these shoes out and to get a matching pair for my wife, but was super bummed out when they were returned to sender (Honey had a coupon code that Hoka declined eventually, which I later found out was not supposed to be publicly shared). When Hoka finally received their shoes I was able to purchase them again but this time just for my wife, which she just received today. She usually wears a 7 1/2 and had to size up to an 8 btw. Anyways, no hard feelings just a bit bummed out that I didn't get to try them out. I still love Hoka; I'm on my 23rd pair!
