These are my first pair of Hoka One One shoes, after 25 years or more of running exclusively on Asics shoes, both road and trail models. At 62 years of age, my needs have changed and I really need cushioning and alignment more than speed and light weight in my shoes. Like almost every other running shoe, when the subject of cushioning is addressed, it is always focused on heel cushioning. I land nearly flat on my arches, as taught, to absorb the shock and get the most spring in my step. So I always need to change out the shoe liner for a Dr. Shoals gel liner to get the forefoot cushioning I need more and more. While the Dr. Shoals' inserts are plenty cushioned, they really aren't meant for running shoes, no matter how you trim them, and that messes with the foot alignment can cause rubbing and callouses. The good news is that I have a LOT of Asics insoles in my closet. The Hoka One One Challenger ATR 6 is a great shoe with a crappy insole, thin, with breathing holes. Replacing the insole with one of my Asics insoles which are made for running shoes, resulted in a world of difference, and I am getting all of the cushioning needed for my old bones and joints.
I'd also recommend:

Stiff sole (good for a toe problem I have), Excellent side to side stability, Just enough cushion for comfort but not so much as to harm stability. I'm a 75 year old former runner and these shoes make it possible for long walks without the aftermath of sore feet!

I ordered this all black pair specifically to wear while officiating indoor middle school/high school basketball. Cushioning and support were incomparably superior. I have worn Reebok ZigTech while officiating for the last 10 years. The cushioning, comfort, and support of the Challenger ATR in this regard are unparalleled. Please make a black, patent leather pair!

Shoes are stiff. That is expected for a trail/road crossover.

Love these shoes. This is my 3rd pair. Roomy toe box allowed for swelling in my feet during the Rocky Raccoon 100. I'm wearing these in August on the 215+ mile John Muir Trail hike.

I use the shoes during my rehab workouts and my daily constitutional. They are, bar none, the best sneakers I've ever owned.

really love this shoe all around. testing it against altra's for thru hiking and I feel like these are my top choice for comfort and support so far. I don't need a super wide toe box so these feel more comfortable up front for my foot

I run multiple terrains several times a week, at different distances for 3 miles to 12+ miles. I love all the hoke running shoes I own. Very light weight, extremely comfortable and breathable material, really comfortable soles even on concrete or asphalt. I recommended to everyone I know to purchase hoka shoes!

The key to any shoe that I wear is sizing. I've got one foot smaller than the other, and the other a full size wider. This often makes me unable to match shoes properly to my feet leaving the shoes prone to wearing out too fast, or me feeling like I am walking around on a boat, constantly rocking around inside the shoes. Top it all off with flat feet, and being born with hammer toes, shoe purchasing is always a nightmare for me. I decided this time instead of going for that ideal "looking" pair, that I would just concentrate exclusively on the size. So far, that's the ticket. To me, these aren't the most stylish shoes that I wanted to purchase but, boy do they fit well and seem very well constructed. The prior Hoka pair I purchased just weren't the right size and the toe on one side split in no time. For an expensive shoe like that, I was disappointed. But, I decided to give Hoka another try and I am absolutely glad I did. Delivery itself was even faster than I expected. Overall, I have no complaints about the shoes or Hoka and will definitely be pur hasing from them in the future.

Moved over from Salomon Speedcross shoes and am happy with my decision so far. Haven't been off-road yet, but current uses have been comfortable. You can really feel the additional cushion. The back half of the insole really cradles your foot.

I switched from road running to trail running and switched from the Rinkon to the ATR6. I've been through rocks, sand, dust, dirt, mud, slush, snow and ice over 50+ miles over the last couple of weeks and I can't imagine a better sure-footed shoe for it. Thanks Hoka!

I struggle to find trail shoes that fit my super wide feet. I was hesitatnt to try Hoka's, due to the unconventional look. but I like the ride, they were available in 2E for my wide feet, and have a pretty good hybrid tracktion surface. I wish the SpeedGoat traction was available with the rest of the Challenger shoe. it would be a perfect big mud trail shoe.

Not quite as comfortable as the Gaviota 2s I had before, but still amazing. Would certainly buy again.

Love the way the shoes fit and how light and comfortable they are, but noticed the damage in the picture attached 1 week in, with no rugged activity such as running or hiking. The quality should match the price.

Use the shoes for Walking and gym shoe. Minimal lateral stability. Almost seem too tall. Sole can get slippery when wet on a smooth surface. Not particularly soft or comfortable. Not a good value.

I use these on trails that are a mix of dirt, sand, and gravel. They are great for trail running, but unfortunately, they didn't last long. After 115 miles the bottom of the right sneaker started to rip in one area and fall apart in another so I glued those two areas with Shoe Goo. At 135 miles the bottom of the left sneaker started falling apart so I also glued that with Shoe Goo. I love running in these and would have rated them 5 stars if they weren't falling apart.

I've purchased 4 pairs of Hoka shoes. Two Clifton and two Challengers. I used the newest pair of Challengers about 10 times before the tread on the heal came off. I was hiking/running on some rocky terrain for part of the time and am surprised and disappointed that the shoes didn't hold up. All of my hiking / running was on dedicated trails.

They felt good while they lasted, which was about three weeks of usage. All of the grip was falling off of the bottom resulting in a slip on my run.
