The Escalante 2.5 is a cute shoe. I sometimes take an 8 in other brands but needed a 7.5 in this style from Altra. This might be an ok shoe to just walk around in but not for a lot of miles, running, or intense jumping type workouts. Just not enough shoe. It's more like a moccasin feel, comfortable, but no support and around the back of the heel, there is no support, it just folds over easily if you press on it. Going to try the Timp 2 which has a lot more support around the heel and isn't a super stiff shoe, but doesn't bend in half as easily as the Escalante 2.5 does. Thanks for letting me shop and return so easily and free of charge, ZAPPOS!

There is so much I loved about this shoe. I thought it was great looking and the fit was perfect! I am used to wearing a barefoot shoe. I have been wearing Vibram FiveFingers exclusively for a couple years now but have been wanting a pair of white tennis shoes with a wide toe base and perhaps a teeny bit of padding. Well, these fit that description but the cushion is moderate and it was just too much for me. I want my padding to be on the outsole and to be really flexible rubber (like the Vibram V-Souls) NOT a memory foam insole. When we are standing on soft foam like that and our heels (or any part of the foot) sinks, it creates tension and makes pushing yourself up and off to move that much harder, and not in a good way. Soft cushion insoles hurt my legs and lower back. So, if you're wearing cushioned insoles and you have low back pain and/or hip/femur pain, you might want to consider wearing a shoe with less cushioning. I have gotten really used to feeling the ground and I LIKE that! We know that we want flexible footwear without all that support (which atrophies muscles from disuse) so that we USE our feet and strengthen our muscles, building flexibility and mobility. You just don't get that from a supportive shoe. I'm noticing the trend right now seems to be very rigid shoes with super cushioned insoles. That is a recipe for pain and injury! Getting back to the Escalante 2.5... when I took the insole out, they were perfect but the stitching around the outer seam made the footbed uneven and would be uncomfortable. I really wanted to love this shoe!

I run both in trails (love my lone peak 4.5) and on the road! I recently tried my first trail Altras and loved them, so I decided to give these a shot for my road running days. I was nervous they weren't going to be cushioned enough, but after trying Hokas and feeling like I had no push off because of the cushioning I felt like this was gonna be my best bet. IT WAS! I was so pleasantly surprised that I loved the amount of cushion it felt just right. Enough cushion and enough energy return. They are light and responsive but still feel great. I typically run 3-6 miles 4 x week and they feel amazing. I can't say enough about these shoes. They are my new fav! (I alternate with my Brooks adrenaline but find myself reaching for these more often!)

I have long narrow feet and Altras are laughably the wrong shaped shoe for me. My big toe ended up in the center of the very large "foot shaped" toe box. But these were the most attractive of the 3 types of Altras I tried (I also tried the Viho and the Torin 4.5) and also the most cushy. Even though they were rated medium cushy by Altra, I found the sole more comfortable than the "high cushion level" Torin.

The Alta Escalante is a great shoe, light weight, roomy toebox, comfortable. I like that it can accommodate an insert that for me gives some more arch support. What I love the very most is the service Zappos provides. I initially ordered a half size larger - it was too big. I went online to process an exchange, they provided a UPS label for the return and the very next day the shoes in the requested size arrived. I simply gave the UPS driver my package - he delivered my shoes I requested for the return. Could not ask for more - thank you Zappos !

Love the foot shaped toe box. Wish all shoes had that. However, the way the heel feels lower that the front of the shoes made my feet hurt. I have neuropathy in my feet and within the first 30 min of wearing the shoes my feet were killing me and shooting pains were going thru them.

I switched from ASICS to Altra a couple years ago and overall I liked them. Altra shoes are pricier and I don't get as much mileage out of them, but I noticed a change for the better in how my foot strikes the ground so I have stuck with them. This is my first time wearing the Escalante 2.5 and initially they felt fine, but 60 miles in, the right shoe is wearing funny. Thinking it's time to try a new shoe.

I bought these shoes after seeing them promoted by a trainer I follow via the program on my treadmill. These shoes do not disappoint!
I am using them only on a treadmill so far (until the weather warms), and average just over 30 miles a week. They are lightweight and without that heavy footfall sound that I can be heard when using a treadmill. The toe box is nice and wide so there is no scrunching of the toes.
I ordered these in the teal and they are a light enough color so as to not be too "loud".
After many years and miles in another brand, I have been converted. These are the best shoes ever!

I had been on the hunt for a new pair of sneakers for over a year before I pulled the trigger on my first pair of Altra shoes. I've always loved a minimal ride; Nike Free's had been my mainstays until they stopped making my favorite model. I switched to an even more minimal Nike shoe shortly thereafter, only to start experiencing knee pain for the first time in my whole running life. I was dismayed. Injury wasn't, and isn't, my forte. From Nike I switched over to Hokas, convinced that I needed a more pillowy solution. Wrong. Hoka sneakers left me feeling like I was trying to run with mattresses on my feet, and the inflexibility of the soles made my legs feel like tree trunks. It wasn't until I took to running in my casual Allbirds that I realized I needed to return to something springy and flexible with lots of foot articulation. Enter the Altra Escalante. Like I said, it was love at first ride. These shoes feature enough spring to put some serious pep in your step; they're flexible enough to encourage your foot's full range of motion; and truth be told, they are comfy as all hell. From the road to the woods, cross-training and beyond, these are by far and away the best little lightweight runners that I've come across in ages. I'm never going back to anything else.

I am walker with a narrow heel and arthritic toes, so I need a shoe that fits my heel but gives me toe room and cushioning. These are the BEST shoes I have tried. Another plus is they are so lightweight. I love them so much that I ordered a second pair. The only drawback for me is that they are lace up.....I hate lace ups. There are very few slip-on walking shoes available and they are always UGLY! But these shoes, recommended by my running daughter, fit 95% of my requirements and are pretty.

I was a skeptical shopper because I hadnt heard of Altra before but someone told me they specialize in womens feet and so that peeks my interest. I have on and off plantar fasciitis, pronation and my toes get squished in all my shoes. I bought these shoes a size up like I would do for normal running shoes and crossed my fingers. I got them today, immediately took my dog on a walk and they were sooo comfortable. I could feel the extra padding on the heel and metatarsal area, my foot felt like it was walking on a cushion, and my toes never cramped up. The description said this shoe works to keep my foot aligned and I 100% believe thats what they were doing. I was a little nervous about the thinness of the top material but after wearing them for a few hours, my feet never got hot and they feel weightless. Ive already recommended these to my mom and would tell anyone who is looking for a comfy sneaker about these.

For year and years I wore a different brand who discontinued my model. Since switching around New Year's my one toe (black for years) is back to normal color and my hip/IT band pain (again for years) has lessened. Dealing with some plantar fasciitis as I continue to get used to zero vs 4-mm drop, but that is soooo minor compared to the hip pain I used to have.
I feel like I need a little more bulk for longer runs, so I recently tried the Rivera-love those as well. And trying the Torin for walking my dogs-so cushiony! Looking forward to trying the Lone Peak when my trail shoes wear out. I'm a convert! Just wish I'd done it sooner.

The second generation was the BEST! Cushy yet minimal. So comfy for long runs AND track work. I LOVED them. This next gen are stiff and not responsive. I don't know what you changed in the sole but ick

These are my favorite all-around shoe, though I'm bummed Altra discontinued the black with the black sole.
Why is it so dang hard to find an all black shoe?? Or a dark upper paired with a dark sole? I strongly dislike a white sole unless it's with a light colored upper.
(Not going to dock a star because the color I want isn't available anymore, but I'm still grumpy)

I am a chunky, middle aged, wanna be runner. I have several pairs of ASICS, hoka and Saucony shoes and none were ever good enough, something was missing .. I figured it out! Is the wide toe box and the thinner sole; these two details won me over. Don't see myself wanna be running on anything else
Good job Altra!

If you're not a runner and experience issues with the narrow toebox of your current pair of sneakers, you should give Altra Escalantes a try. I've been wearing the Escalantes from their first iterations, and I like the new, improved fabric fit as it provides more stability so my foot doesn't move around while I'm in motion.
I've experienced immense problems with ASICS and most big-named athletic footwear due to their too-narrow design. I've always had bunions and leg issues (shin splints and foot pain) and decided to give zero drop footwear a try and have never looked back.
I like the Escalantes because they provide moderate cushioning which is ideal for my environment as I walk on concrete. I don't wear these during my weight lifting sessions as they have too much cushion for weight-bearing activities, but for walking everywhere -- they're amazing!
The Escalantes will not fix any foot pain you may have -- I improved my shin splints and overall lower body issues with consistent strength training, not because I switched shoes. A proper strength training regimen combined with proper footwear have improved my overall quality of life because I no longer experience immense foot pain when I go for long, long walks.
Also, due to the wide toe box, my toes have naturally straightened out! No more crooked toes. This happened over the past few years and my feet have felt so much better. Definitely give these shoes a go if you're tired of cramming your feet in something that's too narrow.

I walk approximately 4 miles everyday on bad feet. These shoes have literally helped to change my life. While I find the sizing wonky ( I need a full size larger than I traditionally wear ), my feet are happy. There is just the right amount of cushion and the toe box is perfect for my feet, and the heel is narrow enough to keep the fit just right. The shoe is flexible, not rigid.

I have bad feet! I’m a marathon runner with terrible bunions who doesn’t want to quit.
My last 3 marathons I ran wearing Altra escalente Racers. they are super light, and have the Altra wide toe box. However, the sole wears away really quickly, and I was getting through a pair every 2 months. So I decided to try Escalate 2.5 because they seemed to have a little more structure, but not much more weight. I’m really happy that I tried them! I’ve run about 75 miles in them with very little wear on the sole, and they are just as comfortable as my Escalente Racers. I tried a previous version of this shoe about 2 years ago and it was not as comfortable as 2.5. I’m hoping this one stays around for a while. But please Altra, give us some more interesting color choices!!

I have run in Escalantes for about 4 years, and I am still swooning over them! Started in Altras due to bunions (dang high heels!) and they immediately felt amazing. Still made super well. I have tried the Torins and Paradigm, but the Escalantes seem to work best for me. FWIW, I run distances:1/2 marathons to Ultras, and triathlons, and am a nice gangly runner, who is relatively lightweight and light on my feet. I can get hundreds and possibly a thousand miles on these shoes before they need replacing...and only then because there are literal holes in the soles. Thanks Altra!

I don't feel much difference in the newer model than the previous which I think is a good things. The laces are always so long for some reason, that's my only issue and it is really a non issue. I have black and the new white ones in my rotation now for road runs.

I have been in search of shoes that give room for my toes to spread out AND my bunions for a long, long time and these shoes are truly comfortable for running. No squeezing my feet, no pain, all good! If you need bunion room, look no further- these are your shoes.

I was not thrilled with the last model, however this seems to be the BEST version of the Escalante yet! The material is comfortable and they have just the right amount of cushion to keep me going on long walks (5+ miles) as well as short runs (2-3 miles).

As a die hard lover of the 2.0, was so nervous to run in this show given how flexible it is vs the rigidness of 2.0. I ran this am in it... and it was At first run! So lightweight + flexible.
