Before I purchased this parka I did my homework. After last year's Polar Vortex I wasn't messing around! I went to stores to try them on, asked the employees/managers/customers 1,001 questions, went to various websites reading customer reviews as well as read Consumer Reports from top to bottom. You name it, I did it. So trust me, save the time & just get this one, you won't regret it. Now I'm not saying that this particular parka is perfect but it is (by far) the most bang for the buck you're going to find anywhere. Dollar for dollar nothing else in the under $500 range comes remotely close to the McMurdo. It's really warm, it's durable, it's extremely comfortable & it's as fashion friendly & versatile as you can get from a parka. However, I do recommend getting one size larger than the "find your size" option recommends. I 'm not saying that it runs small, I'm just saying that the site under estimates the fit. At least it did for me. I'm 6'1" & roughly 250lbs, the site recommended XL but I went with the XXL & it fits like a glove. The length is perfect. It falls to roughly mid to upper thigh & no wind creeps up. Also, the upper chest pockets are a bit misleading. The pocket openings are on the sides, (not on the top) rendering those flaps on the chest useless & a bit added bulk but I do love that they cleverly hid the drawstring to tighten the fit inside of them. There's 8 pockets in all. including an inside media pocket & one pocket on the left arm perfect for a smart phone or pack of cigarettes. I keep a pair of gloves at all times in 1 of the front pockets that blend right into the plush. I do wish that the zipper was double sided for bending down, reaching into pants' pockets or sitting in the car & I do think that it would've been better if the hood was either stationary or had a zipper rather than buttons but none of that was a deal breaker for me. I like the adjustable cuffs, it lets me set it so that no cold air gets in but I can take it on & off with ease & I absolutely love the drawstrings inside the hood so that you can fix the fur to either be straight across or curved with your face. If you zip it all the way up you will look like Kenny from South Park but I promise that your face will stay warm. All & all it is the warmest coat I've ever owned & yes, I highly recommend it.

Couldn't be happier with this jacket. In these cold and wet New York days, it keeps me warm and dry.
I like how it fits around my waist and arms.
Fabric seems very durable and strong.
It is definitely a keeper!

Bought this jacket for keeping warm in Russia during the winter. It has certainly stood up to the challenge. It has kept me warm in temperatures as low as -32.

Got this coat for my husband because he never had a coat that really kept him warm. I think this one fills the bill. He loves the hood, took the fur off, as he likes it better without. Christmas came early when he got that coat!

I live in a Minneapolis suburb and after last winter's "Polar Vortex" I decided to get a winter coat that doesn't mess around. So far I've worn this coat about a dozen times in temps between 0 and 32 F and I have to say it's by far the warmest coat I've ever owned. It's actually a bit too warm above 20 F or so; even with just a t-shirt underneath it can get a bit too hot. The hood does a great job blocking wind, especially with the front drawstring tightened and the fur ruff flapped forward. Last week I had to wait at a bus stop for about 15 minutes with a sharp wind and -5 F windchill and I was completely warm with this coat and a wool hat and mittens. The biggest negative is that the coat is very bulky, but I don't know how you can get around that. A real fur ruff option would be great also for truly frigid days, and snow cuffs and a snow skirt would be great features as well. The only parkas I found with all of those options were the Canada Goose line, and for non-arctic weather I can't imagine that paying $300 extra would be worth it for most people.

I live in New York City and while we don't get temperatures typically in the sub zero range, the past few winters have been brutally cold. When I put this bad boy on? No problem. I'll take the cold any day in this thing. The detachable hood is kind of weird, i don't know why anyone would want to take the hood off a parka. Aren't they designed to have a hood anyway? That said, North face does a good job with the detachable hood. Even tho wind can cut through, it's not as bad as some other jackets. And it can always be fixed with a scarf. I haven't noticed any of the down leaking yet, so that's a good sign. The jacket has so many pockets and they're all decent sized. The only downside to this coat is that it runs a little large, but then again, I think that's dependent on body type. Great coat. Highly recommend. If you plan on being outside for extended periods of time, this jacket will allow you to be comfortable and warm.

I live in the coldest urban center in the United States--Fairbanks, Alaska, and I work outside in the winter as a guide. My work takes me up north into the Arctic, where I often stand outside at night in colder temperatures than most people ever experience in their lives. I have a North Face McMurdo parka that I bought probably 6 years ago, which is a different color than the ones here. I don't know if the materials and design otherwise is very different. This coat is seriously warm--I am never worried about being cold in this coat. In fact, I usually won't wear this parka unless it is 0 degrees F or colder. If it drops to extreme lows, like -25 to -50 or colder, my parka has plenty of room to add extra layers. With the layers, I laugh at any extreme cold temperature.
Other perks--It's waterproof. It has huge pockets in the front that can hold my gigantic mitts with room left over (this coat is like having a small backpack with you). It has an iPod pocket inside.
The drawbacks, which are minor--The faux fur ruff snaps on, and comes off a bit too easily. Wish it had a zipper. The faux fur ruff does not lay "roundly" over the head--it lays a bit horizontally, so it doesn't look as good as it could when the hood is pulled up. These concerns are not enough for me to drop my rating from a 5 to a 4. Highly recommend.

I did a lot of research since I was looking for a warm coat and the parka is the best and warmest jacket hands down. I do not even have to wear an extra layer and it has pockets all over the place. With previous jackets I noticed the wind getting to me but this jacket breaks the wind.

It hasn't been cold weather yet in South Dakota, 39f so far. But from trying on the parka I can tell it's going to get the job done. I realy like the available sizes it's hard to find anything warm and good looking in plus size. I would recommend this to anyone all sizes.

I needed something like this for very cold days when I can't move around, such as watching cross country ski races. This is pretty bulky but not a big problem during low activity when you just need something super warm. The zipper isn't the best but does the job.

I fell in love with this coat when I first saw it. There was another customer in the store who had the same reaction. I brought mine online because they didn't have my size at the Northface outlet
