I've been wearing this line of shoes for many years because they previously fit my wide, high-arch, pronating feet really well - I absolutely loved them. This v3 is by far the WORST so far and a definite step backwards by NB - if Zappos has an old dusty box of v2 13EE's lying around, I'd gladly trade for them. As others have said, while the width when you look at the shoe inserts is about the same, and the length actually appears to be slightly longer, the fit is definitely tighter, meaning the vertical size of the interior must be smaller. Whoever the marketing genius is that decided to "improve" this model version should be fired, or at least forced to wear these damn shoes. The stability still seems as good as before but every other aspect of this shoe is worse than before. The tongue is too short, the heal height is too short, and even the freaking the laces are too short. I've been wearing this pair, hoping they would break in better, so can't really return them, but I now need to search beyond New Balance for good shoes.

Initial impressions. The tongue is too short like everyone else says. The heels are a little weak so I might not be able to slip these one sometime like other quality sturdy shoes. There is a little extra room around the toes. I don't this this will bother me, the room is there if you need it. So the heal area is cheapened and weakened a little with the mesh outer. Some bean counter probley Oked to small tongue too. Then they plaster Made in the USA all over these. Give me a break! You keep cheaping these shoes that you want a FORTUNE FOR. They is no noticeable technology about this shoe. The footbed has good support and is wide but there is nothing spectacular about the insole softness. You could get away with some $60 Sketchers. I also buy very expensive Clarks and other high quality shoes. I am keeping them because of other statements about foot support but that is the only reason. I dont mind paying for a quality shoe but these dont impress me.

My husband loves these shoes! He has horrible foot issues--incredibly wide, flat and one ankle that is significantly bigger than the other--so finding shoes that fit has been a real struggle. The width and size is right on these and the support is pretty good, although we did add a different (more firm) insole. He didn't like them much when he first got a pair because he felt they pitched him forward, however, once he got used to the different feel of them, he is a big fan. I have to say to those looking for men's shoes that aren't orthopedic looking but fit wide, flat feet, good luck! The battle is real!
I'd also recommend:
We have also had good luck with Propet brand shoes for flat, wide feet.

Amazing support. Such stability. The fit is terrible though the tongue is too short so it’s impossible to get a real lock down without strangling your foot. It’s a good walking shoe but not running. I loved the previous model this one is a big step back.

I decided to switch models from the 1260V7 to this model based on the recommendation of my walking friends. I'm sorely disappointed in the comfort and quality, and now my feet are sore As many have mentioned, the tongue is too short to do any good and slips laterally. As you can see by the photo, after only 250 miles I have completely destroyed both the heel cup and the front of the show where my toes flex when I stride. This shoe isn't quality-built, despite the "Made in USA" collection label. Save your money.

I went with the 4E, opting for the additional width. Absolute heaven! So glad. These fit really well, and provide tons of stability. They were recommended by my podiatrist, as I'm trying to heal my heel (see what I did there?) I've long been a fan of New Balance, but have not been thrilled with the past pair or two. This pair have completely restored my brand loyalty. I recommend them to anyone who's looking for a solid support shoe that doesn't look like a support shoe.

New Balance has been my preferred brand for years, but these are just lousy for me. It's so disappointing that I paid extra thinking I was getting a quality US product. I have very wide feet, so I was excited to see these came in 6E. (Usually I settle for 3E or 4E.) But they actually felt too narrow. I had to skip lacing some of the eyelets in the forefoot to get them to fit. The arches and heels are way too stiff. I'm used to breaking in heavy work boots or combat boots, but not walking shoes. They rubbed the skin off my heels in the first week. They're still too stiff now, 4 months later. The last nail in the coffin is how fast they're wearing out. I've had them about 4 months, and I use them to walk about 3 miles a day. I only wear them when going for walks, so not all day long use. The fabric around the heels has holes worn through now. I think this is from them being to stiff. Instead of flexing with my foot, the shoes slide up and down on my heel. This was the most I've ever paid for walking shoes, and these are sadly the all-around worst I've ever had.

Extremely poor quality. Received as a Christmas gift, in 2020. Wore less than 3 months 2 to 3 times a week around the house. They developed a hole which is progressively getting bigger. Sorry but this should happen to a $170 pair of shoes in less than three months. Do not recommend at all, total waste of money.

I have worn this same New Balance model for years. This latest pair bought in April 2020 wore out in 2 months. The quality has changed dramatically in the newest model. His previous pair lasted 3 years - same shoe, earlier model. I cannot recommend.

I have collapsing arches and wear a 15E. I wear New Balance x40s, as these models are the only shoes that don’t give me sharp shooting pains in my feet (or any pain at all). These are the first NB shoes that I actually like the look. The heel notch is sturdy and doesn’t fold like cardboard, as it does in other NB models. Like with most new running and walking shoes, the top line is unnoticeable and never wears. The shoes don’t trap heat, but also don’t leave your feet cold in the winter. Wearing a size 15E, all shoes are heavy. Therefore, I don’t have a good point-of-reference for weight.

Only took two days of walking around my home for these shoes to feel like they were meant to fit my feet. So comfortable when walking and standing. Feel so good, I don't want to remove them after my work day. I wear them every day to my job and for my daily 2-3 mile walk.

This is a VERY good shoe. But for me the amount of padding in the ankle hole made it look enormous. Probably a good walking/stability shoe but not what i was looking for.

I need this type/sized shoe: 11, 4E. When I use: I am an aggressive walker - one hour 4 times a week. 63 years of age. Love the support, comfort, fit and feeling - before, during and after each event!

I think they are great - I had a pair before for almost 5 years but the insoles are worn out. I should have ordered a second pair right away. I had gone to the New Balance store outside Allentown but they didn't have them and were not expecting them in until after July.

I walk 5 days a week when weather permits. I've been through many pairs of NB 928v3s over the years. Recently 928s were not doing the job. Thru the process of elimination and the help of Mitchell, I ended up in a smaller (half size) NB 1540s. Mitchell took the time to explain 1540s were more sturdy because they are running shoes. Tried them on, fit was great and the next day I was walking in much more comfort than I had been. Thanks to Mitchell's great customer service skills and knowledge of his product!

I have been buying these shoes ever since they were released. Fit is excellent and they give me the support I need. These shoes are made on the SL-2 last, which has a wider toe box that is more comfortable for me (I have flat feet). I wear an 11.5 narrow (AA) dress shoe, but buy these one size larger at 12.5 D.

This particular model (New Balance 1540) was recommended to me by my orthopedist (foot specialization) over two years ago, and since then I have been using only this model of athletic shoes... perfect for me.

I was very surprised when I put the shoes on for the first time. I think it may have been the first time in a very long time that these new shoes fit perfectly. I actually thought they were custom made just for me. Looks and feels of quality. They may seem pricy but they ARE WORTH EVERY PENNY! These New Balance shoes were made in the USA and deserve the American flag logo on the box.

Hello All, I see several negative reviews here and I just want to emphasize this: I think the reasons for shoes "wearing out quickly / falling apart," and "tight/uncomfortable" MAY BE DUE TO INCORRECT SIZE AND/OR WIDTH. I would review New Balance's guidelines THOROUGHLY, including printing-out their size "gauge" and even checking with Customer Service if you think it necessary. No doubt these MADE IN USA ones are absolutely top quality and workmanship, and materials. I had a pair or two in the past and I had some of these issues. Much later, I found to my surprise that I was one full size bigger than I thought! I found out by having a very accurate size-check in a local shoe store. So that was the reason I am certain. Width can be important also, and sometimes a size larger or a half-size larger is necessary. It depends on the individual shoes at times. So please consider all of this. It is highly unlikely that there is any quality or workmanship problemhowever "obvious" it may seem. THANK YOU . Dan K. (Of course if you are not American, and are from Great Britain or Continental Europe et al, DEFINITELY THE SIZES AND WIDTHS ARE DIFFERENT. One more thing: sometimes some sneakers should be treated with a high-quality spray leather treatment. I would ask Customer Service about this.
