This is my 5th or 6th 1540, my 1st version 3. Great stability, I don't notice a difference between V2 & V3. I have flat feet that overpronate, my prescribed orthotics combined with the 1540's stability are great. For casual wear, I'll buy nothing but 1540's until they stop making them. For fit I go 1 size wider to accommodate the orthotics plus a silicone insole and I remove the insole that comes with the shoe.

I use these shoes for walking about 4 miles a day (total of 1327 miles in 2020.) I have a wide foot and this shoe gives me plenty of room and offers great support. The shoes are not heavy and dry out quickly when wet. The only problem I have had is the mesh, at the top of my toe area, has pulled loose from the rubber portion on some of the shoes. Overall, I am very happy with this shoe. I would recommend this shoe to anyone!

Since I do a lot of walking I was trying to decide if I should stick with the 990v5 or go with something different. I've walked for over 1300 miles in 8 months, and I have to say that these have been the best shoes I've ever worn. That's not to cut down the 990's because those are also excellent. The bottoms are just starting to smooth out and there are a few holes in them, but that's to be expected after that many miles. I'm ready for a new pair and I know that I'm sticking with the 1540v3.

Had plantar fasciitis so I searched for shoes that would help. I first purchased the 990 and they worked. When it was time to replace them i was introduced to the 1540. I feel in love as soon as I put them on. I will never purchase another type of shoe. After I get done with my cardio workout, my feet feel amazing. I would recommend these shoes to anyone..

Great shoe to run in, but now retired from running and walk only. Great fit for me and true to the sizing especially the width.

I work retail (in a warehouse store) so I'm on concrete 8 hours a day, five days a week. I started having pain in my left foot, from the ankle down. Tuns out I was suffering from peroneal tendonitis. My doctor said I needed better lateral support and recommended these shoes, along with a walking boot. I got the shoes the next day and noticed a significant difference. By the time the walking boot arrived (six days later) the tendonitis was almost gone. I returned the unused boot and have had no issues with my foot. The incorporated roll bar keeps my foot from "wobbling" and has helped eliminate the pain.
I also love the large toe box - my toes tend to get squished but no issue with these shoes. They're also great looking and I've gotten lots of compliments.
Highly recommended.

I have been wearing the same New Balance size since 1987 (11.5EE), and these shoes fit like a glove! I have been wearing the 990 series and decided to try these. They are Awesome! Feels like my feet found their perfect home. These shoes have an updated look, and I love it. For me, I like the shorter tongue. Also, the length of the laces is perfect. With the 990s I always had so much left over that the laces would occasionally get caught on things, but not with these. Kudos to New Balance for building my perfect shoe, I hope to be wearing this model for the next 33 years. Don’t change a thing. They have the perfect balance of cushion and support. Thank-you!

Great for long walks on hard pavement and working out on Elliptical and gym. Toe box is as big and comfortable as expected in a 6E. If only there were tennis shoes available in 6E with a similar toe box !

I've used the 1540 as a walking shoe for more than 5 years and over 10,000 miles. This was my 6th purchase and I'm so very happy that NB has only made minor changes over the years. I always try to buy "Made in the USA" and these fit the bill. Kudos to New Balance for another winner.

They are very good they aren't up to the ones I have been wearing that are US made. It is disappointing that I have to keep switching styles to get American made.

I'm a nurse, on my feet a lot for 12 hours a day. I like New Balance shoes because they're comfortable and last a long time. A few months ago I purchased the 806 Tennis shoe, which was a new style for me. The toe is a bit narrower than I usually get, and as a result, the shoes killed the nails of both great toes which eventually fell off. I spoke about this with a saleaperson and she suggested the 1540. It has a wider toe, it's vented, much lighter and cooler than the 806. I'm much happier with the 1540. I only wish it came in more colors, the two colors available on the site don't really suit me, but I can deal with it.

These 1540v3 are well set for use with people who have issues with their feet with an arch issue or total orthotic placement; they support my feet very well and keep the comfort level going all day with various activities. Great for walking, keeps motion stable, and does not slip on most surfaces. Well worth the slight price investment have been using New Balance and different versions of this shoe for over a decade with a lot of success in keeping my feet happy for the long days at times.

Comfortable both running and for daily wear, but after only 6 months they are pretty worn out, developing holes inside and out. Not great for $188. I have had much less expensive running sneakers last 2+ years, but of course those have all been discontinued.

It's my exercise and work shoe. Provides excellent support and all day comfort. I exercise in it and work at a standup desk all day. I wish the shoe's tongue were a little longer.

As others have stated the shoe fits well. The 6x has plenty of toe room. My only complaint is that the tongue is to short. I am having to pull it up constantly.

Very comfortable shoe. Slightly larger toe box than other models which added to the comfort.

This is my fourth pair of 1540's and I'm still pretty happy with the shoe. I agree with several other reviewers that the tongue is too short and this makes the instep a little uncomfortable.

The 1540V3 is still a good shoe. I don't think it's better than the 1540V2 in any way but it's not a disaster. I probably purchased the 1540V2 10-12 times over the past five years. It was absolutely fantastic. I wish New Balance had just left it along.
Regarding the 1540V3, the first thing to note is that my full-length orthotics fit perfectly. I pulled them out of 1540V2 and put them in the V3. This makes me think that the basic fit is unchanged between the two versions. I tested my new V3s on my treadmill for three days before I cut the tags off, in case I would need to send them back. I did three miles on day one, three miles on day two, and four miles on day three. I didn't have any issues with fit or comfort.
I'm not sure why New Balance decided to "fix" the 1540 with this new version. I'd rather continue to buy the V2. That being said, I have trouble finding wide shoes with strong support. I will be able to continue buying and wearing the V3s.

The 840v4 in 4E fit my husband pretty well but one place a bit binding. He's stretched them now and they are okay but we contacted NB and they suggested the 6E. It would be helpful if Zappos would add a sort of all shoes by width, especially for men. This style in the 6E too clunky so we will stick with the 840 v4 4E.

Have worn v1 and v2. Shoelaces too short, tongue is narrow, small toe box and sidewall is not as rigid. Easy for small toe to work it's way out. Feels like taking things out, instead of beefing up the good stuff.

New Balance has changed this model so that the toe "bed" is narrower, and the roll bar is no where near as stable as the previous model. Very disappointed in this shoe that I've been ordering for a number of years. Now I have to search for a different shoe.

Mixed feelings. Love the styling, love the comfort. This is my favorite NB shoe, but...after a few months of moderate wear (3-4 days a week, not worn for work, not used for strenuous activity-just walking, sized properly) they developed a hole in the mesh. Same thing happened with my 1540 V2s, but at least that pair lasted 1+ year before the hole appeared. For being a part of their premium line (and price), you’d think they’d reinforce the upper portion of the shoe so this wouldn’t happen so quickly. Having said all that, I like the other aspects of the shoe so much that I’m ordering the same shoe as a replacement. But you’re on notice New Balance. If I once again have to allocate these sneakers to lawn-mowing duty after just 3-4 months I’m moving on to another brand.

I replaced my former shoes with the new version of the same syle. This version does not provide the same level of support. As someone with flat feet a poorly designed shoe causes pain and discomfort. Sadly these new i1540 were a waste of money. Seems the quality has dropped while the price remains the same.
