I am a big guy with wide feet, so I ordered the New Balance 990v5. Several years ago, I had the 990v3. So....the sizing and width were spot on. They were very comfortable from the time I first put them on. Very little to no break in period. I am not a runner, but if I was, my thought is that the 990v5 would be a bit too heavy. Simply put, I love these shoes. The only suggestions I would have for the next version of this shoe is making the tongue a little longer and to be able to secure it (tongue) to the shoe with your laces. I also want to add that prior to getting the 990v5, I tried and returned the New Balance Fresh Foam More (too tight of a fit) and the New Balance 1080v8 (not enough padding in the collar). I would also add that Zappos made the return process for those two shoes absolutely painless. The 990v5 is a quality shoe.

I have worn this shoe for the past twenty years and this new shoe fits better and is more comfortable then any of the other five pairs that I have had. Great shoe!
I'd also recommend:
Brooks is a good brand but they don't offer anything in AA width. Their B width runs narrow.

Great as a casual knockabout shoe. Not so much a running shoe. The tongue slides down into the shoe after running a short distance, then the two sides where the tongue should have shielded, rub against the top of your feet. And just too bulky to be optimal running shoes. Need to be lighter and more breathable. The extra width option was nice but unfortunately had to return.

I bought the 990V5 (V5) to replace my 990V4 (V4). I really liked the V4, but I love the V5! The V5 is my new favorite work out shoe, and I currently use a few different brands. I use my V5's for walking outdoors, treadmill walking and running, and for elliptical workouts. I do not use the V5's for running outdoors on hard streets or sidewalks. When I walk indoors or out, it's usually 4 to 5 miles. I spend 45 minutes to an hour on the elliptical. I am not that knowledgeable about the technical aspects of shoes, but I know what feels good to me, and these feel great. I haven't worn these to work or any events that require a lot of standing, so i can't comment how these feel for standing on your feet for great lengths of time. The V5's fit very comfortably for me; they are snug, but not too snug as to be tight. Good room in the toe box and heel, but they don't slip around on my feet. The V5's also help with my pronation. The soles are also very comfortable - great, thick feeling cushion that feel solid while nicely absorbing the impact of my feet. The uppers are solid and strong, but still offer good flexibility. For walking outdoors or on a treadmill, the V5's deliver a confidence inspiring performance. The V5's feel a little heavier than my other brands of running shoes. But, the V5's feel more solid and stable, so I don't mind if they do weigh more. For elliptical use, the V5's feel pretty good for about 30 minutes, then my feet go numb. This is common for me with any shoe that I wear on the elliptical. So, I don't blame my foot numbness on the shoe. I bought the black V5's and they're a pretty sharp looking shoe. I feel very good about buying the 990V5's!

Firth thing is the tongue. It is too short and slipped down in the shoe within a very short time into my run. The shoe just feels too bulky to be a running shoe. It is not light and breathable like my other running shoes. If you're buying this as a casual bop around shoe, thwen it may work for you. Still, you may have the tongue issue as well.

This is my go-to shoe. Well-built American made, classic. Fits like a running shoe, one size up from your casual/dress shoe size.

These shoes exceeded my expectations. I can wear them all day, in all conditions except riprap and they exceed. I wear 2 sets of orthotics and they fitsnugbut worked. I may buy a 2nd pair. And, my wife likes the look.

It is this model and the previous 990V3 I replaced that are the only shoes I can wear for long walks without my feet killing me as I have peripheral neuropathy. Quality construction, just wish it cam in more color combos

I ordered these with high hopes as I am 14 AA. The shoes fit great, especially around the heel and in the front part of the foot.... Unfortunately, they are higher than other NB shoes around the ankle bone and dug in as the edge hit just below the ankle bone. I have 860s in 14B that do not do this and fit well other than being a bit too wide and needing two thick socks or thick socks and added insoles. Also while in some markets you can take returns to the NewBalance store, in KC the store does not accept on line returns (like most retailers), and they did not have any shoes in 14AA, so you have to use the return label - it is not hard, just more bother. I am thrilled that NB makes extra narrow shoes in extended lenghts, I just wish there was another model.

I have been buying only New Balance sneakers for about 15 years because I have a large size (16B) and New Balance has pretty much been the only company that has made them available. Unfortunately, their sizing seems to have changed over the past 2 years. The 16 is now too big (long) and even the B width has become too wide. Not sure what is going on but I have had to return my last two pairs because they are just simply too big.

Love them, fit like the pair they are replacing. As long as NB offers "Made in USA" products they have a customer for life!

These were more comfortable out of the box than the v4 which I bought last September. The fit and finish is superb and the only real difference (besides the reflective flag on the tongue) is that there is no space on the tongue pad for the top of the laces to go through, but this doesn't seem to be a problem. I wore them for a 7-mile walk last night and my feet were only slightly sore toward the end. I do wish there were more color choices than just black or light gray, but they are quite attractive.

Don't pay attention to the negative reviews that are only bashing the v5 because it's not exactly the same as the v4. That's the point. Just because you like the v4 better and haven't even tried on the v5 doesn't mean the v5 is automatically terrible. Anyway, I loved the v4 but the v5 is a solid upgrade. The ortholite insole adds a bit more comfort and I like the modernized design. Fits true to size and is a great everyday shoe, much like it's predecessors.

A little heavier as it is built out of premium materials, but it won't fall apart next week or month. You can order a smaller size as runs large. Plan on stocking up a few pairs for the future.. Thanks NB.

I like the 990v04 better. From a stay perspective. The comfort and fit are typically great. General styling not a rugged and aggressive as 990.v004.

I've been wearing 990's since 2003 and have been unhappy with all of the updates since a shank was added. The rubber always decomposes around the shank. The v5 looks like it may have the durability that it once did.

Super comfortable and feel durable. However, if you are in between sizes like I am, DEFINITELY GO HALF A SIZE DOWN. Don't make the mistake I did - I could get away with this with other shoes but these are too heavy so they flop around if they are too big. I'll be buying another pair the correct size. Well worth the money especially if you are on your feet all day, and extremely fast shipping!
