As a big senior guy that needs a quality sneaker that's not going to *break-apart and will provide comfort for my joints(knees) as well as great stability and balance when I walk and for everyday use. I've been wearing these long lasting shoes for a long time. I recently purchased 2 pair ( 4- extra wide) of the 990's in black that my chiropractor approved ( and liked). The purchase was done on the phone and I couldn't be happier with the product as well as with the reasonable ship arrival and great customer Service I got from Matt( Mgr. St. Louis) as well as every other customer service representative I spoke with. I received wonderful treatment especially with all the questions I had. 5 Star Company.

Extremely comforitable sneaker. I love that they have the shoe in a 6e. Perfect for walking in. Not a bad looking shoe either being that other brands wide shoes are very basic or weird looking but not New balance.

These are used as everyday walking shoes, for feet that are showing their advanced age. The extra-narrow fit is almost a non-existent option. It provides a securely-wrapped feeling for my very narrow feet. Not only does that add to the comfort level, but also helps to reduce side-to-side foot motion, which can create a balance issue. As for the quality and style, both top of the line. Try them, and you'll wonder why it took you so long!

This is a great shoe. I wear it every day and have not had any issues with the fit or comfort. I do however take the original insert out and replace it with one that corrects my pronation. Compared to other manufacturers New Balance has managed to keep making a quality shoe especially this particular one. I also have another pair of NB which are the 860 they are also great shoes but lighter and cooler. One advantage the 990 has is they give problem feet like mine great stability and superior cushioning. I like these shoes.

I've already returned 2 pairs of this shoe, and am about to bring back the 3rd. The first two pairs were flat-out defective - both had a protruding seam inside at the arch, which painfully jabbed into my foot with each step. This new one is better, but after wearing it for a few days, it's become clear that they've changed the last on these, and the fit in the toe and heel areas are much larger. My toes are swimming and moving in the shoe too much. Plus, what's with the weird plastic strap near the ankle? Seems ugly and useless. Do yourself a favor - buy a pair of 990v4's on sale while you can still find them.

Howdy All! Ok, I have a ton of thoughts on this shoe and I think I can bring some fair insight. If I could, I would have probably left 4.5 stars... First off, on it's own merits this is a great shoe, but there are some caveats that I have for it. In terms of sizing, I'm surprised how some have claimed that it runs small or narrow as I feel that it runs average on width and long in the toebox, now that's not to say one should size down as I feel like most will prefer a true to size fit. For my feet (which I'd say are slightly wide) I went down a half size for a more true 1 to 1 feel, but in doing so, took a couple wears to break in properly, which after felt perfect. For reference, I wear a TTS 12 in 998s, 997s and 991, but 11.5 in the V.5 Now, for the nitty-gritty... Verses the V.4... to me this is almost a battle of form VS function. Although both shoes are well made, function well and are basically attractive, the V.4 does have a legitimate, but minor edge in comfort. The V.5 rides a little lower and would seem to have slightly less cushion, at least in the forefoot. In the heel, the amount might be the same, but the V.5 is a bit stiffer and when worn all day, especially on back to back days, you can feel the difference. Still, the V.5s feels nice, just slightly behind the 4. In terms of looks, I give a big advantage to the V.5... this of course is personal, but the V.5 falls on the more attractive side of the "dad" shoe trend. It's lines are cleaner and slicker, from the upper to the tooling on the midsole. It's still early in its life, but I can see it's panels (moreso it's underlays) being used for more powerful and aesthetically pleasing color blocking. For many buyers who are just looking for a well made shoe, both are good options, but for the "average Joe who just needs sneakers" I might say track down an on sale V.4, but if you are into fashion, younger, or are a cool dad, the V.5 might be the more hyped option. -Marty aka "theMurDuck"

They felt more comfortable than the v4 right away. I’m more of a walker and have orthotics inserts which, maybe because comparing new cushy v5 to old worn v4, felt so much more natural and fitting. Color choices are limited and the flag on the tongue feels a bit much, but the feel outweighs these minor peeves. Ah yes, they squeak as I walk don’t remember I had that with the v4 but hope it goes away with wear.

These are the go to. I wish they fit like my older versions, not sure what's wrong. Might need worn a bit more.

I stand on my feet all day and need an all leather shoe for work. This is a very comfortable shoe however, that comfort doesn't last very long due to a very poor insole that flattens out in no time.

My men's foot L is 10.5"= 26.7 cm = 81/2 ; ( not 8) Width 4.1/32"= 25 cm = XW for thin sock. Pros: The 990v5 has some new design and new type/more comfortable ortholite ultra soft insole, than it's predecessor. I like this particular series of new balance for it's comfort and balance as I walk or run. The prompt and soft construction holds on for long. I wore 2 types of them before, so this is my 3rd pair. Cons: As I wore them before, my big toe eventually punctured the upper - causing a hole to be fixed. The 990v5 81/2 XW still feels a little loose in lenghts as I walk, but trying size 8 XXW is tight. The new balance chart is correct, but, If you want to make sure what size to order, please see my detailed foot sizing above - comparing with your foot measurement!

I have purchased New Balance shoes for years as I have a narrow foot (N) and it's hard to find my size. Fit has never been an issue until now. The New Balance 990v5 is wider than my last pair 990v3. I would have bought the old version had it been available.

I usually wear New Balance 928s unless I have to dress up. While I need the extra support those shoes provide if I’m going to be doing a lot of walking these are a viable alternative on lighter days. Really comfortable with a roomy toe box. I did have to go up a half size - I wear a 12 in the 928s and I need a 12.5 in the 990 v5. Lucky for me Zappos carries wide shoes in all these sizes.

My feet are wide and high. So I bought this 6E version. But because Shoes tongue is too thick and long, and sewing area of tongue front end is too thick and rough, so the shoe tongue end irritates my ankle and the sewing area of tongue front end scratches my toe root and instep of my foot. I bought two kinds of 6E NB shoe models here but this cons happened at each shoe model, too. I regret buying these whenever I am walking. Don't send me e-mail advertisement everyday.

I would say this shoe runs narrow in a way that is both uncharacteristic of the brand and fairly unforgiving. I can usually get away with regular width, but in this shoe the support features in the instep cut into the side of my foot. This makes them almost unwearble, seriously disappointing experience.

I have bought and worn, the 990 series for years (going back to 2001) and it was the only shoe that would hold up especially if you are on yout feet in a retail job. I bought these recently and thought they felt good, but after a month or so, I started to feel differently on my feet. I look and they no longer have Abzorb cushing in them and it shows. NB big fail on the shoes. I will have to research ones that have it or find a new brand :-(

The V5 was a huge upgrade in my opinion. It took a already great shoe to another level. Like walking on a cloud. Plus they finally fixed the tongue stays centered. I highly recommend these if you require such a shoe.

I'm a light runner, but walk briskly, about 6 miles a day around Manhattan. It's a waking city, and walk everywhere, to and from work, to Central Park, shopping and bopping. The 990 is a legendary shoe, and the V5 has made subtle improvements. The arch and footbed support is improved over the V4. The tongue has much more padding. The side support is better. It might not be the sleekest runner ever, but it's a classic. I can spend the entire day in my 990's and my feet feel fresh. Zappos and their customer service consistently blow me away. Same thing with my friends. There are a few companies that have fantastic customer service...Bose and T-Mobile come to mind, but Zappos is the standard.

The gold standard for comfort and support. THE legendary running and lifestyle shoe. Made in the US and built to last. The only thing better than the New Balance 990 is Zappos customer support. There simply isn't a company like Zappos. The constantly wow me!
