This new version of a classic shoe seems, so far, to be excellent -- good fit, comfortable, good looking. It is not quite as comfortable a walking shoe, for me, as the New Balance shoes designed specifically for walking (for example 847), and the 990 has gotten very, very expensive. But it's comfortable, and in my opinion the gray of this shoe is a welcome relief from all-white walking shoes. I marked fit as true to size -- by which I meant true to size for New Balance; I wear a 10W in Rockport, and a size 11 4EEEE in New Balance.

The v4's fit perfectly so I got the same size in the v5's. Ordered a size 12 Standard and it felt pretty tight around my feet. When I talked to customer service they recommended returning them for a Wide pair. The Wide pair feels too large around my feet. So now I have a 12 Wide and have them laced as tight as possible. I desperately need good sneakers ASAP for an event where I'll be on my feet all day for several days - so I'm kinda stuck with them.
Visually these are a definite improvement over the older models. On that note I wish the toe cap was on the top layer and more obvious / protective and the gray heel cushion went all the way around the heel instead of stopping 3/4 around the inside heel.

50 years ago I bought a pair of AA dress shoes. The store gave me a deal because I was their only customer who could wear them. They were the only shoes I ever had that truly fit until the magic of online shopping allowed me to find such shoes again. Even so, they are few and far between. In fact, these are the first running shoes I’ve seen. I usually settle for B’s. I walk 5-7 miles a day on NYC sidewalks, so I need a good shoe. These fit the bill for that so far. I’ve only worn them for about 3 weeks. I’ll see how long they last, but my previous, cheaper pairs of New Balance have done well. I usually can get my 10.5 foot into an 11 NB B-width. These required a full size bigger. My foot fits like a glove. At first, I thought they were too narrow and then I removed the extra pair of socks that I always wear in all my other shoes. Perfect! Gave style 4 stars only because I really wanted a pair of whites and I had a choice between black and black. I admit that I get tired of the NB logo, too. But I’m grateful to the company for filling a very small market niche. There are not a lot of men’s AA feet out there. P.S. It’s a little thing. I’ve been double-tying running shoes for years because the furshligginer laces keep untying. These are hard to UNTIE when I double-tie them, but when I single-tie them, they usually stay tied. May their tribe increase.

Oh I've been with NB for a very very long time just absolutely P U R E quality and its fabulous that I can buy direct from Earth City I live in Springfield MO so I get my products overnight now this new v5 is off the chart in quality nice and roomy flexible strong and has the beautiful 990 look I walk 8 miles a day and do weights so I rotate my group of 990 shoes and I WILL buy another pair of v5's soon as my old 999v4 is on its last leg but for a non walker they still have tons of miles left on them "" if you can find a better shoe buy it""" even our UPS driver who brings the shoes wears and works in NB black work shoes but this buy direct this is fantastic BECAUSE there have been knock off's and incorrect shoe numbers so I am buying direct ALWAYs from now on and I KNOW I am getting my shoes directly from the people who made them not cheap but one must consider what they are getting and if you buy 2 pair and rotate them and take care of them they will last for years

I ordered these for my husband, and he is extremely happy with them. He says that they are very comfortable and provide the right amount of cushioning and support for his needs (walking, running, and he will probably also wear them for biking). Two thumbs up!!!

These are the best shoes I have ever owned. I'm a grandma with big feet - men's size 10, 6E. They are comfortable from the first moment of wearing them. I have owned 5 pairs of these shoes. I worked in a library and was on my feet much of the day and now I'm retired with sore feet. They are great shoes!

I currently own the New Balance 990V3, 990V4, and 990V5. The 990V3 and 990V4 fit true to size. The 990V5 fits 1/2 size too long for me though. I would recommend the New Balance 990V5. I own Adidas Ultra Boost and I like the 990 better. The 990 continues to impress me. It has the right amount of firmness and stiffness to the midsole. Again would recommend go down 1/2 size if you are between sizes.

I have worn many versions of the same sneaker over the years. Great sneaker comfortable great support. But I find the price way exorbitant. You get what you pay for, but I find I'm holding on to the sneaker a little longer than I should for the price they charge. Upper also doesn't seem to last as long as the tread. But overall would buy again. Great shoe.

Not sure why the fit description says order a half size up. I have the blue New Balance 574 that Bean sells and have to wear an 11. I have also purchased Brooks Running shoes from Bean in an 11. In Bean Brand shoes, like Blucher Mocs, etc. I wear a 10. So I am not sure what the fit description is comparing these to but when compared to other sneakers or running shoes they do not run small and I would not recommend ordering a half size up. If anything they run large. That being said, they are excellent quality. Expensive but you get what you pay for. Plus they are made in the USA. I have been wearing the NB 990 for about 10 years and have yet to find a shoes that are better.
