I use New Balance inner sole inserts, with the originals removed.
But that should not cause 'the issue'. When you're walking through
a quiet lobby and the only sound you hear is sound of your left shoe,
"cweak, cweak, cweak, ... " that's pretty disconcerting and, frankly,
makes you feel rather CONSPICUOUS.
The footwear more impervious to this annoyance is the dark gray
MW877G Walking. But I'm looking for good higher limb protection
from real activity impact. I'm not sure the MW877G is fully up to that.

I have been buy 990 v4 for years now. Three pairs a year. 8.5 4e. The 990V5 are now two wide. The toe box is wider. I took them back and got 8.5 2E... the heal lifts and is not as nice.

Was well made but I was hoping for an upper mesh that was breathable, it wasn't, and that's what I needed for work. I would consider it in the future for personal use.

I like this shoe. It's very stylish, and grey fits with everything in my wardrobe. The quality of the shoe CANNOT be beaten, I will stand by that. The materials are very premium, and I love the attention that New Balance has put in regarding suede placement, shoe laces, etc. I will say I wanted to like this shoe more, but I have some gripes; the mesh it's purely aesthetic. From my experience, it does not make the shoe more breathable, as there is a somewhat thick inner liner that surrounds the whole inside if the shoe regardless of mesh/suede placement. That being said, it is a warm shoe; not a lot of breathability. Second, it is a little heavy and can be stiff as well. If you can look beyond those two, then you will love this shoe. I know I do.
Also one little not on the fit; all NB MiUSA models fit me a half size large; I am a 13 in the 1080v10 but a 12.5 in the 990v5.

Worn the 99x since they surfaced, and have to say these fall shorteven when compared to the v4. Harder sole, and the mesh on mine are tearing after light use. Still love New Balance but these are a letdown. Here's to the V6!

Have been using NB for fit ever since you first came out, except for brief period end of 70's-early 80s when you stopped making narrow sizes. I'm older now and have had both knees replaced and even one revision op, so walk now rather than run. But to me v5 is a definite downgrade from v4 - through v4 NB has had firm heel strike that adds lift at leg raise. v5 is like large pillow so heel sinks in w/o lift assist - must work noticeably harder to achieve same result. I have very narrow foot so want NB to continue to succeed and make narrow widths available. Suggest you jettison v5 config and go back to concept you've had successfully through v4 models. Only plus is it seems to be more forgiving while healing hip discomfort recently triggered by a baggage handling incident on plane flight.

I returned this shoe because the sole insert too thin. I expected more cushion. I love new balance and dunham and have had many pairs, but this did not feel good on my foot and was too expensive for what you got.

The 990v5 I ordered in 6E width but it seemed more narrow than older New Balance 6E width shoes and definitely narrower than the 6E Dunhams, so I returned the 990s. Also the heel is quite elevated-- some will like that and others not. Otherwise, it was quite comfortable shoe and well cushioned, especially in the forefoot/ball of the foot.

They are ok at best. Only offer a couple colors in all sizes and width. The only place i seem to be able to get shoes this wide or i would leave New Balance in a minute. way too pricey for the quality.

Nice looking and comfortable when wearing.
Design flaw! Horizontal stitching at upper back of heel causes shoe to fold over on itself when putting on. Shoe horn does not help.

Very comfortable, have to leave them in the garage though, stinks up my closet with cat urine smell. they said it was the fixed 2 versions ago. Not yet. Have other NB with no smell.

I would only buy this product again if you put back the strip on the tongues that holds the laces in place and keeps them from drifting from left to right. Can't believe that NB would leave them off. It can't be to save money, can it? The price charged seems enough to provide this convenience.
If you offered to sew them onto my new 990 shoes, that would seem appropriate. Let me know of you are willing to follow through with my suggestion

Tag states made in the USA, however width on same model but on different colors, did not have the same toe box size. Had to exchange for a wider size. Beware! Keep your shipping carton and try on as you have 45 days to exchange. Free shipping return does not cover a poly shipping bag. You will need your shipping carton!

worn NB 990 for 10 plus years . I wear a 10.5W. Have a stability issue that requires this shoe all the time. I do not run, play tennis or go to the gym. BUT I DO WORK. I need an all black shoe which NB no longer makes in the woman's 990 (only the men's version (gender bias??).I don't wear sweats to work so why do I want a shoe with silver details or a big white NB on the side. I was told that the black men's equivalent size was 9.5 regular width. The length is fine but the width is too narrow across the ball of the foot. The difference is quite apparent visually.

I'm using this type of shoes from more than 15 years.
They are very good shoes but last 4 months only.
After 4 months I have 2 holes near my 2 thumbs.

Fit has been changed in version. The 6E is cut smaller then in the 990v4 shoe. 990v5, while usable it is not as comfortable as the previous version

I have been wearing these shoes since high-school and that is like 20 years ago! My V4 had huge defects on the sole- and NB was great and allowed me to return past date. I was a bit sad that perhaps the quality has changed- but optimistic now testing the V5. The sole design has changed since V4, so I am hopeful that the issues that I had on V4 will not be present in this new shoe. If you like a classic prep and understated running shoe- this one is your choice. I have used both grey and navy and get more compliments in the NAVY...:). This version V5 seems a bit more streamlined for V4 and less bulky if that is important to you!

The 81/2, 6e shoe feels very comfortable for 4e/5e wide and flat feet - as I walk long distances. The shoes mesh keep feet warm as cold days approaching , and extra room 6e assists for thick socks.
There are some minors wished to be improved like: the inside front toe stitch thick thread, and short tongue, that, rather goes in than stays out.
I do recommend.

The tag wore off my old pair so I didn't know what size. I remembered they were wide-wide so ordered the 2E figuring that was double wide. But when they arrived I couldn't even get my foot in. Back they went with a 4E order. Why not change your sizes to W and WW? No confusion then. The E's just confuse the issue.

I have been buying NB for over thirty years and have used the size 10 1/2 EE consistently. These new shoes seem to be running a little big. It feels as though my heel slides around. I'm a little disappointed that I paid a lot of money (for me) to have a shoe that doesn't fit as well as previous pairs of the same size. Other than that, it is a well constructed shoe and happy to pay a little extra for something made in America.
