A fast feeling shoe with a great sole unit that holds the foot very on the downhills. I love these for backpacking... fast, nimble, and comfortable.

I wear a size 11 in Speedcross 4's, I had to return my first pair of these and get a 10.5 to get the same fit. These have much more room in the toe box than a speedcross, which was my only complaint on those shoes. I am waiting to test these out until the snow melts and it dries up a bit, but so far they feel good just wearing and walking around. Initially the heel felt very loose, but I realized I just needed to lace them tighter than I would usually, so far this isn't a problem and the heel issue was immediately fixed.
I'd also recommend:

Way Too long , . I have been running in Salomons for years and never experienced this before. I am still a huge fan of Salomon , just not these shoes.

First impressions after a 12 km trail run on mixed terrain in Northern BC : I like how responsive and protective the sole feels, the cushioning, the breathability of the material, the colours and the lightness. I noticed that the lacing system kept loosening and I had to re-tighten each shoe about 3 times. I found the lower floating wing on the interior of both shoes created an uncomfortable pressure point with potential for blisters. Still early days of course as I am still breaking them in but wanted to leave my first impressions. I have been running Speedcross 4s for the last 2 years so my foot may need some time to adjust. Leaving 3 stars for now and I will update once I put down some more kms.

Unfortunately, these shoes did not bode well with my feet. They are very narrow. That also makes them very pointy. My feet are not shaped that way. With a roomier and less pointy toebox, I think these could be fantastic shoes. The grip was great. They are lightweight. The lacing system works well. They were also very stable on the trails. When I had to decide between these shoes or my toenails I ultimately chose my toenails and sent these back.

After all the reviews, I thought there would have been more padding on the bottom. That why only gave it 3 stars

Context:
Foot type: High arches, neutral feet.
Size: Typically a 9 in US womens size running shoes
Shoes that work well for me: Salomon Sense Ride 2 in size 8.5; Brooks Ghost in size 9; La Sportiva Mutant in size 41.
I have had the Sense Ride 2 for about a year, and have loved them as a day to day trail runner. However, the the SR2 is a bit soft and not protective enough for rocky terrain, so I was looking for something with just a bit more stiffness and protection underfoot, but still similar in feet and feel to the SR2, to use for longer and rockier (but not super technical) runs. I was stoked on the Ultra Pro because it seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
After reading the reviews, most seemed positive, with a few caveats. The main thing I noticed was a few people saying the shoe was long, as well as some comments about the "top-loading" lace pocket (vs the bottom on other Salomons.) I purchased the shoe in size 8.5 (same as my Sense Ride 2) anyway.
I got these a few weeks ago and have only put 3 runs on these so far, 5-8 miles each. I haven't been motivated to take them out them on anything longer because of the fit.
Fit:
- They definitely fit longer than the Sense Ride (which I'm already sized down a half US size in.) I felt like a duck in my first run in these; after the third run, they've softened up and I don't have this feeling as much anymore.
- Whether as a result of the length, or maybe just the last and fit for my feet more generally, the shoe doesn't feel great. The side of the shoe presses on the outer parts of my feet, causing pain during the run if I pull them too tight, and pain afterwards regardless.
- On a positive note on the fit, I don't have to pull them super tight to feel like I have a secure fit. If I tighten the laces just enough (with no pulling or forcing), the fit just works.
Shoe:
- The material and construction definitely seems more durable and solid than the Sense Ride, for example, and I think the shoe does fit the bill of the "more durable" Sense Ride I was looking for in that sense.
- I purchased these in Ashley Blue / Copen Blue / Charlock; they look nice in person but a bit boring (the photos are accurate.)
- The sole is grippy, but not extremely so.
- I agree with other reviewers that the bottom-loading lace pocket is nicer; however, I haven't had any issues with the top-loading one popping out or anything (once I get the laces in, which is kind of awkward.)
Verdict:
I would be curious to try these in a size 8, but my guess is they'd be too tight and uncomfortable when going an entire size down. Ultimately, this shoe might work for someone with a different foot shape, but they haven't been great for me. I'm going to continue putting shorter runs on them just to have them in the rotation (and hoping they may soften up further), but ultimately I can't recommend them.
If you're interested in the Ultra Pro, I recommend trying them on in person and purchasing at your local running shoe shop to make sure the unique fit is right for you.
