My only complaint is that out of the box they are very stiff. I have high insteps and when I lace up the last eyelet there is too much pressure across the instep. They are comfortable walking in but not nearly as much as an all fabric casual Altra shoe that seems to be no longer available. I would still recommend it with caveats.

I have worn 10.5 size shoes for years now, but the Cayd 10.5 is so tight it becomes painful after a short time. I am going to try an 11.0 but may have to go to an 11.5. The other Altra shoes are great and I have several pairs in the 10.5 size. I really enjoy the wide toe box and wish more manufacturers produced them. Until then, I will keep ordering Altras. I wish the Cayd was sized correctly.

Altra has been a go to brand for me when it comes to running or trail shoes. I was excited for a more casual and all black shoe. Looks wise, they are the traditional Altra shape but with leather upper. It is very clean and minimalist looking.
Material's feel like good quality, especially for the price. The shoe laces appear to be waxed, the leather is very soft, and the shoe is fairly well ventilated.
They feel great on first try but be sure to try walking with them indoors before deciding to keep them. The heels rub and dig and after just a short wear, you'll be wondering if they will break in and go away eventually or if it is better to just return them. After wearing Mephistos for a while, the soft midsole was actually hurting my mid foot/arch area. If you don't experience any heel problems and okay with the shape of the shoe, then these are keepers.
Size wise, they seem to be on point. They fit similar to the Escalante 1.5 (2.0s fit tighter) and Lone Peaks.

I wear my Cayd occasionally and only walk with it casually. Bought it 1.5 years ago and my left shoe has been squeaking with every step I take. I like the shoe but the sound is really annoying and had been happening for the past 6 months at least, perhaps longer. The tread looks good and I can't tell visually where the sqeak is coming from. I do know it's on the front half of the shoe. Has anyone else had this problem?

I really wanted these shoes to fit me. I have worn my older Everyday casual shoes a lot and thought the Cayd was more attractive and a nice update to the replace the Everyday shoe. Unfortunately the sizing and fit are very different for my foot. I wear a 10.5 in the Everyday (and the Lone Peak 4, the Paradigm 2.5 and the Olympus 3.0) but in the Cayd that was too large. I returned the 10.5 and tried a size 10 in the Cayd. The length was good, but the toe box felt wider that my other Altras. I also had a problem with rubbing in the heel of the right shoe - enough to cause discomfort through my medium weight wool socks. I ended up returning the size 10s since the Cayd did not feel like it was working for my feet.
I'd also recommend:

I really want to like this shoe. I'm still trying. I have an earlier pair of black ones that I have been wearing for a few years. They are very comfortable but have the same issue. I had hopped that over the last few years Altra had fixed this. Everything is great in the front of the shoe, however, there is little to any padding in the heel counter and the heel collar. Altra is great about putting lots of padding in their running shoes in these places, but for some reason leaves it out of these. I wear these at work and a little padding can go a long way. For now I have fixed this will a little of my own padding and duct tape. Like I said, I really want to like these, with some minor padding they could be great shoes.

They're sorta goofy looking but fairly comfortable. Will definitely consider other Altra shoes in the future.

I loved the instinct everyday. I wore an 11.5, it was the perfect shoe for work. This shoe admittedly looks better, but doesn't have enough volume for me (same size). The width and length are both good for me, but my feet feel a bit cramped, and the back of the heel never felt comfortable, it felt stiff, and would dig into my heel, even after wearing them for months (a lot of people complain about this). I took the insoles out, and now the fit is perfect! The heel is high enough that it is totally comfortable. However, I prefer using an insole, so obviously the shoe is less comfortable without it (although still more comfortable than with the insole in). Even with the insole, the sole doesn't feel nearly as plush/supportive as the instinct everyday. If you could make this shoe with the sole of the instinct and the volume of the instinct it would be perfect.

Looks very nice. But the toe box is cramped. The major reasons people like Altra is that the shoes supposed to have a roomier toe box. Though the front of the shoe is less pointy than almost all other brands, the lateral side still curves inward, meaning you have to have a pointy toes. And the volume of the toe box itself is smaller because the fabric is tightly span the toe box. The width is great (I normally wear 4E shoes but this size D fit me perfectly). The shoe looks very nice (except for the trendy white sole),.

The shoe fits me perfectly but as a casual shoe it is too warm. The "perforated" leather is really a gimmick because it has an inner layer which disables airflow. Please fix this. Also - please make the sole black and I won't have to be embarrassed wearing them to church!

So, I wear size 13 and like a big toe-box. Funny thing is while these shoes gave my big toe room they squished the others because my toes don't go down on some 120 degree aslope like the "footprint" for the shoe does. May work for others, didn't work for me. Qulaity looked just fine.
I'd also recommend:
Asics and Nikes for larger toe box...on some of their models.

Altra doesn't need to make this style of shoe, but they should, because no one else has and there is a need for it! I hope they keep improving it. This first design is not ready yet, though. There is no give in the sole and the leather is thick and stiff. Just borrow the sole from the Escalante or Solstice for the next go around.

I would love to purchase these shoes for casual office wear but the white sole is a BIG deterrent. How about a non imposing shoe offering the zero drop and foot shaped toebox and save the jump in your face look for the running shoes.

I really like the foot-shaped toe box on Altras, and these have it. They were marked M but fit like EE. However, due to the cut of the leather, and perhaps the stiffness of the leather, the toe box felt very cramped top-to-bottom. Whenever the toe flexes as I walk, there is a pinching feeling on both the big and little toe sides. I considered keeping them anyway and hoping they break in, but they're very pricey for sneaks and I don't like the style enough. I worry a little about the leather's durability, too, as its finish seems sensitive to marking -- out of the box they had a few marks already. The light-gray midsole feels a little "foamy," which makes sense for a running shoe but I thought was a little odd for a nicer sneaker.

The shoe looked like a piece of thin material painted gray. The shoes lacked good support, I had to use a $50 insert to make them work. As fares as comfort not, they feel like I am walking on river rock. There hasn't been a good general use sneaker since Earth Shoes for men stopped making shoes in 2013.

What I like: the wide toe box. It really feels great to let my toes naturally spread, something my other shoes don't do.
What I don't like: everything else. The zero drop feels really weird to me. My feet didn't feel flat. I felt cushioning in the shoe except for the heel, making me feel like my feet were standing across two levels with the heel being lower. The middle of the shoe also felt narrow and the tips of my toes were irritated rubbing against the hard material inside the front of the shoe.
I wanted to like them but I have to send them back.

Love my lone peaks, but this shoe does not live up to the comfort and style I was expecting. The shoe is mostly leather, even the vented area over the toes making it way too heavy and stiff.

I bought a pair of these a while back and my feet thought they'd died and gone to heavy. I literally had no complaint about them except for them running small so I had to return for another size. Recently as the first pair was worn and needed to be replaced I bought another pair. Maybe they sourced another provider, but for whatever reason the shoe does not fit right. The heel cup is too rigid and also feels like it rides higher on my ankle. They are very irritating to the bone that sticks out about an inch or 2 above the heel. Maybe with wear they will feel better, but I shouldn't have to do that. I bought them in Nov. and had my wife give them to me for Christmas so it's too late to return them.
I won't take a chance on another pair after these. It's a bloody shame that in this age of manufacturers shopping around for the cheapest source you can't count on quality being maintained.

This fit true to size & like all Altra shoes they give your toes rooms to spread out with each step (as they are intended to do). I returned these because they rubbed against my Achilles tendon and the back of my heel. At the very least, I was going to get some blister (unacceptable) before they "broke in" or they were going to be a constant source of discomfort if they never broke in. Either way, for $130 I'm not putting up with ANY discomfort. Very disappointed because I've been wearing Altra running shoes for many years and I was excited to try one of their "casual" shoes.

I've liked my Altra running shoes, and I wanted to be able to still have toe splay and zero drop during work, so I figured the all black would be a great fit. Nope. First off, like other have noted, the toebox volume is super low. The width is nice, but it feels like the shoe is pressing down on your toes. I got the right size, so that wasn't the issue. Also, the cushion is nonexistent. I've honestly had military boots that are more flexible than these. They've actually got a fairly thick midsole, but instead of being comfortable and cushioned, they stiff, inflexible, and hard as a rock. It feels like you've got two-by-fours strapped to the bottom of your feet.i wore them for two hours at work before taking them off and returning them the next day.

It was a great shoes. Not a single backache or foot fatigue after 3 months of walking in Europe. However when I tried to clean the shoe, the color came right off .
Altra made it right and gave me another show but has to write this review, hoping they will change the material.

Unfortunately I have to say I'm very disappointed in this shoe. As soon as I put my feet in these shoes they did not feel good. I have purchased 4 pairs of Altra's previous "Everyday" model. Now, their new "Cayd" model is terrible. It is not at all as comfortable as the previous model and I personally prefer the style of the "Everyday" model vs the "Cayd." I had been counting on Altra for help with sensitive feet. Now, I have no choice but to find a different brand. Thank you Zappos for your return policy.
