It provides the necessary protection. It's better then boots, more breathable. However, I did end up returning it because it was still just too heavy for my liking. I work long hours on my feet in different kind of settings. So really it's something you have to determine weight versus protection and how much you're willing to risk.

Good enough. The tread picks up too much trash and they are heavy. Fairly comfortable and seem durable.

I bought this shoe because I wire Industrial Control Panels. Sometimes large panels.I have been doing so with New Balance shoes for the last 12 years with very little problem. This shoe seemed to be designed for some one working in construction as it is very rugged and the insole is very thin. It is a bit heavy but lighter than a pair of boots. It is well ventilated so I would not walk thru mud with them on. I do stand all day wiring and these shoes fall a little short. If I keep moving there fine but after about an hour of standing I start to feel it.

This shoe is heavy, defiantly not good for working on concrete for 10 hours.

Wish they were made in the USA. Seems everything is made in China now.

The fit is good and the style of the shoe is nice but due to the composite toe, the outside of both big toes rub on the composite toe causing discomfort.
I'd also recommend:
Shoes made in the USA or come with in a 5E width.

I work with electrical equipment, encounter slippy floors and carry motors, heavy parts and other things that would otherwise crush my toes. I've had a few sets of New Balance shoes and, for the most part, they are comfortable and serve their purpose (Fresh Foam running sneakers, cross trainers, running sneakers). This is the first time I've purchased their work shoes. Externally, I am impressed. It is a pretty shoe and a worthy not-ugly heavy work shoe. It is comfortable along the edges and top of the feet and also has a good toe box. Not too tight, room to wiggle. The problem is that there was absolutely no arch support. It was really bad such that my arches ached in less than an hour of work. I had to pull the inserts out of my old work shoes and put them into these for it to be acceptably comfortable. Overall, good looking sneaker, great for work with an insert.

The shoes look great, are lightweight and well built. That being said, the toe cup is too narrow for wide feet. If you order these, and you take a wider shoe, go up in size.

I purchased 4 different shoe, 2 sizes and 2 widths, still the safety toe pushed in on my big toe. All other parts of the shoe felt good, just couldn't get comfortable.

I can't wear shoes with toe caps. Other than the toe caps, the shoes fit well, and looked good.

I love my NB M990 v4 street shoes, but these are stiff and unyielding. Fit was perfect, build quality good but they simply won’t flex.

Since I only buy your sneekers I tried your work sneekers with the composite toe (required for work) but I was a bit surprised that they did not come with the memory foam insoles(really)and the fact that my toes feel cramped when I put them on,almost like the thickness of the shell was not compensated for. I now need to look into yet another brand to find something I can work in comfortably.

The shoe fits tight even though I ordered a larger size, the composite toe cap cramps my toes, and the shoe has too much arch built in. Causes foot pain after an hour. Hard to wear for work. Probably will not purchase again.

I'm required to wear safety toe shoes at my job where I'm on my feet for 10-12 hours a day and I have to stand on concrete and metal floors. They seem to be holding up well after nearly 3 months of use and the sole has excellent traction on a variety of surfaces and different conditions. I went with these shoes because I've always worn NB shoes and I usually find them to be very comfortable. However, these are the most uncomfortable shoes that I've ever owned. My feet and ankles would begin to hurt within a couple of hours and by the end of my shift, I was hurting from my lower back to the tips of my toes. I ordered some insoles that helped tremendously allow me to end my work days with little to no foot pain. I feel that given my previous experiences with NB, they should be able to make this shoe much more comfortable than it is.

On my feet 10hr a day, and these shoes are not comfortable at all. I've owned many pairs of NB shoes and have never had this issue. That was the reason I chose to go with these. Not sure if different models feel better, will be hard to give another a try.

I wear these for walking around the plant in a non-nutritive beverage manufacturing facility that uses the color blue a lot. I thought they would be a good alternative to leather, that hopefully they would breathe more but natural leather actually breathes a lot better in my opinion even waterproof natural leather breeds better than these. I've noticed my feet sweating more in these than they do in natural leather boots. They also have a feel that I would describe is "not confidence building". Thirdly one of the shoes has a lip on the inside over the composite toe that is curling over when I put my foot in it (this is all on the inside) so I have to take the shoe back off reposition the composite toe to get it back into place and then put it back on I've never ever had to do that with a shoe of any type before. They didn't require a break in. Obviously but that's because they're extremely flammable materials that pliability does not inspire confidence when walking around the plant over the various gratings and things of that nature. I will be returning to boots. These were an experiment that I believe is a failure. They also have little to no arch support.

I've worn NB 4E shoes size 11.5 since 1984 back when you brought your own running shoes to USMC boot camp so when I heard they had a CT shoe I did not hesitate to get them. Big mistake! They are not a full 4E which is miss leading and dangerous. I tried to wear them to see if they would stretch out but this caused an injury that after three weeks I am still not 100% over. The arch support was great so I decided to buy a half size larger but these too are not a full 4E. Very disappointed but still wearing my none CT NB shoes as I write this due to their comfort and support in helping to get over the injury.

I have wide feet, 5X to be exact. It is very difficult for me to find wide enough shoes. I have been wearing New Balance shoes almost exclusively since the early '80's. My first pair was either 581 or 583 style. The Composite Toe 589 is the first New Balance shoe that I have had a problem with. It seems the toe box on the left shoe has as slight defect in it. There is a leftward twist. This is causing pressure on my left big toe and some kind of misalignment involving my left ankle, causing a very painful 10 hour shift. The right shoe toe box is as it should be. Fits correctly, no pain.

Shoes were a lot heavier than expected and the sole was very hard. Maybe suitable for working outside but not for walking on hard floors all day.

These shoes came with no insoles in them. I added some insole from another pit of shoes and they are bearable for a secondary pair of shoes for work. I am on concrete and pavement for 8 hours a day and feet are usually hurting before I get off work. Will not be going back for more.
