This is the best backpack I've ever owned. Even when packed to the brims, still feels comfortable and sturdy. Would deff recommend to anyone and everyone.

This backpack is very spacious and can fit several textbooks and notebooks along with a laptop. I am a girl so I have a lot of little things that add up and they all fit in the big front pocket. I chose a darker color just in case I get an internship or when I go to graduate school it would look more professional. Also, the material repels water which is a big plus since it rains a lot where I live.

This product is amazing for school and commuting! I use it for school and now I never have to worry about fitting all my stuff! The large amount of space, coupled with handy organizational tools, allow me to easily access all of my school items and tools! This a durable backpack that, while stylish, will comfortably last a student throughout high school and college! My only complaint is that the backpack is hard to balance upright. You can do it, but it just takes a couple extra seconds. All in all, this is an amazing backpack!

I am a graduate student and was keen on getting something that would hold everything - my laptop, accessories, books, documents, and many other daily essentials. The number of compartments this bag has left me spoiled for choice; I could not possible use all of them even though I have a lot of items. As a result, it keeps me organized. The ergonomics are laudable - the bag feels very comfortable against my back even with a heavy load. The two side pockets are excellent for a water tumbler. To top everything off, the bag looks stylish. I spent some time researching on my options, and chose this essentially for its function and design. I would recommend this, and am looking forward to bringing it with me on travels.

Since getting this backpack a few weeks ago, I've used it every day. It's amazing. Looks large at first but doesn't feel bulky or really over-sized once it's on. The design is very sleek, which means I can use it for my day job without looking too casual. I've loaded it up with a lot of things and it stays very comfortable. The detachable waist strap is a nice feature that removes some of the clutter.

If you are looking for a backpack that can serve a variety of uses, then this is the backpack you are looking for. The Surge II is perfect for any college student that has to carry a bunch of books around with them all day to serving as an overnight bag. This backpack contains enough pockets to store all your personal belongings and more with extra storage space available.
COMFORT: Comfort is the key thing I look for when searching for the right backpack. The back pad and shoulder straps are cushioned which helps provide that everyday comfort when carrying around a large amount of books and supplies. Additionally, there is a sternum strap with a whistle buckle as well as a waist belt which helps add that additional support when carrying a heavy load.
DURABILITY: As a college student myself, not only is comfort very important to me, but so is durability. It is expected that you carry around a notebook, supplies, and a couple books depending on your major plus a laptop. Walking around a large campus with this weight on your back can cause wear and tear on a backpack very fast, but I have owned mine for three years now and it still looks brand new. Although this backpack costs a little more than what people desire to spend, it definitely pays itself off overtime. I have owned cheaper backpacks (Nike, Adidas, and Jansport) in the past, and The North Face has outlasted the others by one to two years thus far.
WATER RESISTANCE: When attending class in all kinds of weather, it was important to me that all my belongings stayed dried. With this being said, this backpack has a padded and lined laptop pocket to keep my electronics dry when it rains or snows. There is also fabric on the outer layer is water resistant which then helps my books and notes from getting wet.
Overall, if you are looking for water comfortable, long lasting, water resistant backpack then I strongly recommend trying The North Face Surge II. When the Surge II is purchased on thenorthface.com it comes

I really enjoy this backpack. It is very spacious and provides great padded support in the low back and shoulders. Given this backpack's volume is 35 L it is very long and being 5" 4' it is a tad long. However, there is plenty of room for me to carry my workout gear and school supplies. I look forward to using it for hiking purposes too. Side pockets are large enough to hold a Nalgene sized water bottle.

I have always bought bargain brand backpacks or skater backpacks so this was a bit of a jump for me. This being my first North Face bag so my opinion is a bit skewed, but this bag has changed my views on the company. The ergonomics of the bag are phenomenal, the amount of space I have for gear is perfect, and the quality is about as good as it gets. I will make one comment on the laptop storage. If you do not know why it has a lay flat compartment, it is for TSA guidelines, the TSA makes you pull out your laptop to be scanned separately, but with the lay flat compartment all you have to do is open it and send the bag through the scanner. All in all this bag has made my day to day life much easier.

Great backpack for fitting everything when traveling. Tons of pockets that work great for many things. I particularly like the fleece lined pockets for electronics and other important things.
I knocked off a point for the color--DOES NOT match what is shown, the grey inset is much darker in person.

Good bag. Roomy and has great organizations. A big heavy and also big pet peeve - if you sit it on the floor it will roll over. Doesn't stand up straight.

Great backpack for commuter and student who need to carry a lot, plenty of space (3 zippers) with two bottle pouches on the side. Personally, it has more pouches then needed. Durable material, sleek design and good comfort. Best part is the comfortable straps.

Great for school and travel. Plenty of space to hold all of my books and binders. I love the pockets with the soft lining - great place to put my stethoscope. Only complaint is this backpack is oddly tall. Covers my entire back and leaves 10-12 inches of space above my books. But overall satisfied.

I ordered online the one with the contrast grey colors. The entire backpack is very dark! It looks nothing like it does online. Will be returning for a different one.

I ordered the since grey color and the color I got was completely different than what the website shows. I really liked the contrast with the light grey but the entire backpack is a dark grey. It's not even close to what the website shows. The product is great but be careful if you want a particular color. If you choose the since grey you will not be getting what you expect. Very disappointing.

I was planning on using it for college but putting my books on there made it so heavy and the backpack itself was kind of heavy as well.

Dear TNF,
When will you perfect the water bottle pockets that do not hold anything what so ever? I have lost so many bottles because of these poorly constructed pockets.
Now, my greatest concern is durability....

I ordered this backpack mainly for the color. I didn't like any of the colors available for the women's option, so I went with this one. I thought it was going to be like the photo available online. However, when I unpacked it, I saw that the color of the backpack was MUCH darker than I had originally anticipated. The grey online is a light, heather grey. The one I received was darker than charcoal grey, so I was disappointed
Since, I'm a woman and this is deemed a men's backpack.. it's on the bigger and bulkier side. I was willing to sacrifice being comfortable as long as the color was as it is projected on the site. Since it wasn't, I returned it. I got a Women's Surge Transit in all black and I like it much better.

Had a Borealis and loved it. Gave it to son. Not that happy with this model. It's okay but a few things are frustrating. Zippers pulls need contrasting color as they are hard to find. And zippers keep getting caught in bag material and need to be "unstuck". Also, the top of the bag hits me in the neck or bottom of head when worn. These seem like small complaints - but I use my backpack all the
time and thise things detract from an otherwise good backpack.

One zipper broke off completely after a couple months of use. The second zipper came loose and now doesn't zip.
