This piece works great as an outer layer when skinning up in the back country. And as a mid-layer on the way down. I have tried skiing in it, but the big PRO going up-hill - the air-permeability makes it not as great for fast forward activities (no surprise). Though the combination of throwing a shell layer on top, like the Procline Jacket, makes it stellar. If Arc'teryx would make a thinner version of it, and please DO, I would order it right away. I am thinking the same jacket but in 40 gr insulation (instead of 65gr) + a hood that is a snugger fit and without a drawcord. Be inspired by Patagonias Nano-Air LIGHT Hoody and make it better. :-)

I wear this all the time year round in northern CA. Even indoors sometimes I like this much better than the atom LT hoody I had - somehow it breathes better, especially in high exertion activities (like mid layer alpine skiing) even though it doesn't have the arm vents. I'm curious if it'd be better with arm vents but am happy with it as is. if its not quite as weatherproof as the atom LT as they claim, then I cant tell...this handles all weather up to the point where I'm putting some type of shell over it anyways. Even if it gets hard rained on it stays warm and dries really fast. Light rain and snow is no problem. ARCTERYX: please make a "Proton SL Hoody" and I'll buy it immediately. Make sure it has these same pockets, if not 2 chest pockets

Brilliant everyday insulated breathable jacket. Works great with the Alpha FL shell Quality piece from Arcteryx and I prefer this to the atom.

I'm writing a review as someone who is constantly confounded by overheating during exercise, but also someone who quickly gets cool during moments of exercise inactivity. This is especially tough during backcountry snowshoeing and hiking in the winter time. I got this jacket hoping for a remedy to my constant problems, and I've been super impressed. Fabric: The outer material rocks. It's flexible, but robust. Unlike my atom sl and cerium lt, which each have their purpose and advantages, this jacket I feel like I can use and abuse without fear of a snag, pilling, or tears. Its robustness alongside with its breathability make my gamma lt-atom sl combo almost redundant. Fit: Snug, but not as a slim as the atom sl or cerium lt. I can easily fit multiple layers underneath. I'm 5'11, 150 lbs and a small works great. Range of arm motion is incredible. The cord locks on the waist are the new design, and seem far more robust and responsive than the older design. Why don't you put these on every jacket Arcteryx? The storm hood certainly is hood compatible, but the fit without a helmet, could be better, but is adequate. Breathability: I've tried nordic skiing, backcountry snowshoeing, and hiking with this jacket. While moisture does build up, it's breathability is almost on par with the atom sl. The difference is that the moisture more easily evaporates and the outer fabric makes it far easier to put a pack on. I don't think quick, intense exercise is made for this jacket, but climbing 2000 ft vertical elevation in 2 miles wasn't a problem for this jacket. Easily stowed in a pack when its time for the cerium to come out! Overall Vibe: This jacket seemingly does the impossible of including a) a robust outer fabric b) flexible design c) breathable insulation that seemed to escape the atom lt that I had for two years. I am impressed and can't wait to try this jacket at alpine skiing and more.

This is my go-to piece of apparel. I absolutely dig the versatility as the uses are many! This is an item I can honestly wear in a super wide range of temps from sedentary 40's and 50's with a t-shirt to using it as a mid layer in the single digits. On a recent trip to the Alaska Range I wore this pretty much the entire trip from door to door in Talkeetna. One of the standout features is the high rate at which the jacket can dump excess heat. Not always is the case with many layers but adjusting the zipper height was more than enough to dispel the excess heat and moisture. I'll add that I use this as much just heading out the door around town as the temps drop seeing as I feel like I can often wear this inside without feeling like I am in a sauna which is hard to find with many jackets IMO.

I never really understood the idea about the Atom LT, which is really windproof on the front, but would let the wind go directly through in the side panels. For me this Proton LT makes perfect sense, as an all round more breathable jacket. This also makes this jacket much nicer to use in a layering system. I used it on +5-10 degrees days with just a t-shirt under biking, and with a thin fleece under while rock climbing. I will look forward to use this ice climbing as well.

This jacket has quickly become my new favorite piece. I have used the Atom LT Hoody for years for similar purposes, and I have used it very little since I got this piece. My main use is a mid layer underneath my ski shell, but during a recent snowshoe outing and backcountry ski trip this performed well as a stand alone piece. Still gives great warmth and also breathability during high output which is nice.

I have been using this jacket for bike commuting as a mid layer in sub zero temps and it is excellent. It breathes incredibly well and is better than the atom lt for high output activities. I used to overheat in the atom lt but not with the proton. I use a light shell to help with the wind resistance ( 25+km/h makes for too much wind for the jacket). I will be using the jacket for cross country skiing and winter hiking soon. Great purchase!

Overall love the fit of the jacket except for the underarm area, it pushes up too much. Tried to size up but it was too baggy. The atom lt is perfect at the underarm but the fit is a bit loose. The hood feels like it is better than the atom lt but that could be me.

Had this for little while now. I have 3 colors; gray, blue and red. The jacket is very soft, comfortable, warm and light weight (like most all Arc'teryx gear I have tried) while still being durable. I wear around town which looks great and I always stand out. Either for just the look or to those that know. Jacket held up against abuse. Practiced self arrest, falls along with other general skills. Jacket held up no problem and still looked great. Wore while hiking and mountaineering and the jacket did exactly what is what supposed to do and it did it perfectly. I truly only have 2 complaints. My first problem is not enough pockets. Wish it had two chest pockets like the Practioner and internal pocket as well. Second problem is red is not as bright Atom or Practioner. I know they are small issues and I agree but still issues to me.

I also own an Atom Lt and this jacket fits a big snugger FYI. I have found it good to act as a mid layer, over a wool t shirt. It's pretty warm and comfy and I like the outside chest pocket as I find them to be more useful than the inside version. Over all a good jacket.

I chose this because there was no AR jackets in the larger sizes. I'm 6'2 and 240lbs with a 49inch chest. The XL of the "fitted" type was just a little too small. Otherwise it's a lovely jacket. Nice features. Not quite as warm as I was hoping for. About right for a -10*C no windy day. Saying that I run warm. If you are a cold type person this will be a definite mid- layer jacket.

This is my main climbing jacket. I love it. The only gripes I have is at 6'0", I wear a large and my chest is a bit too bulky and I have to zip it all the way up or the zipper will unzip to under my sternum. I've been wearing this jacket for five years and it's been to the top of several countries. It will remain one of my favorite pieces. I just wish the zipper truly was non slip.

This jacket might be Arcteryx's best product. Its warm and lightweight, and fairly breathable. You're not going to do any running in this jacket but it will be perfect as an active layer on cold days or just to wear around town on mildly cold days. It even blocks the wind really well. The shell fabric feels durable given the jacket's light weight. Along with its warmth, the durable fabric makes it a great standalone jacket. It doesn't really feel like a mid layer at all. The fit is really nice. Better than Atom LT. (More form fitting in the arms and torso, but not slim fitting) However I don't like how it's short in the front hem. I'm 6'0, 174, and fit, and with size M every shirt I wear under this jacket sticks out in the front. I get that the back is longer for functionality, but they could add an inch to the front and the back would still be longer. It's a poor design feature I see on a lot of Arcteryx pieces. I haven't tested this in extreme cold yet, but I dont expect to be wearing it in those temps anyway. Nice job Arcteryx! Buy this jacket if you're on the fence!

I had a Proton LT without a hood and it was a perfect jacket. It was great for going around town and keeping me warm and stylish on chilly and snowy days, and it was an excellent breathable mid-layer for skiing. I wish it was still available without a hood because now the hood gets in the way as a mid-layer, and it adds extra bulk when just wearing it around town. Now there isn't anything as breathable and as warm as the Proton LT I used to have. I would love to see this jacket come back without the hood. Would still recommend this one to anyone who likes hoods.
