Don't be fooled by the average stars rated - most of those people sent them back so read the reviews thoroughly! The calves are very narrow, but I got them zipped up. The shaft height is higher than it says (I've asked them to correct). It's closer to 15.5" in the front. I am between a size 7.5 and 8, I initially got the 8 but it was too big. Was hoping the 7.5" would be better. Still hit my knee (I'm short though 5'3") but fit in the foot. Zipper is stiff. But the WORST part is that the leather is so stiff. I wore them around the house and the leather was buckling into the back of my heal and I'm sure they will crease in short order. Not comfortable at all - they hurt. I read every review to see if it would loosen up. Only one reviewer gave the review after wearing them long enough to find out and she said after wearing them for 2 months there was no change. So I'm going to have to send them back. Lovely otherwise, but can't wear a boot all day that is awkward and hurts. Just beware, most of these 4* and 5* reviews returned them, with the same issues. I don't think if you are returning something you should be giving it a 5* review -- there is obviously something wrong with them even if it's just for you. When I see 4 out of 5 stars I think most people loved them!

Great flat boot. As always, Frye does not disappoint. I have narrowish feet and use an arch support. I wear a 7.5 or 38, and the 7.5 was just right. The shaft circumference is good for small calves. Not quite snug with tights, but I've learned to live with a bit of a gap.

These are absolutely beautiful in every way: quality, style, materials . . . I love the shape, which shows the shape of your calf and ankle in a flattering way. They're a perfect fit and very comfortable, too. But I'm kind of knock-kneed, and because they stick out a little on the outside of each leg they emphasize that. Not sure if I will keep them, though I know it will be hard to find more stunning boots. Thanks, Zappos!

Really loved this boot! I typically wear an 8, and occasionally a 7.5. I ordered both the 8 and 7.5 in this boot. I read that Frye's will stretch out slightly, and some heel slippage is normal upon first receiving the boots before you break them in. The size 8 fit well and zipped up well, but as I walked around my apartment there was a lot of slippage on my heel, to the point where my heel was coming up the back of the boot. I tried on the 7.5 and it fit my foot bed better than the 8, with just a slight amount of slippage. The problem I had with the 7.5's is that they were too tight on my calf. I was still able to zip them up but they felt uncomfortable and I'm not sure how much the calf region will stretch out. I ended up returning both, not because I didn't love the boot, I just was in between a 7.5 and an 8; and with a nearly $400 boot I don't want to have reservations about the size/fit and be able to wear them comfortably. Review I filled out below is based on the size 8, what I typically would wear.

I was sad to have to send them back b/c they were very beautiful, but they would not zip around my average sized calves at the top. One other note is that the zippers were VERY stiff... I'm sure they would have loosened up eventually, but just a note

I just got this boot and I am in love! At first I had trouble getting my foot inside and the leather initially seemed a little stiff around my ankles, but after wearing them around the house for a couple of hours they felt good. Reading other reviews I have confidence they will continue to soften more and break in. It smells amazing and the color (Bordeaux) is very nice. At first the sole seemed to slip easily but after a couple of minutes that went away. These go to just under my knee and are loose enough to tuck my pants in. I can't wait to wear them again!

These are the most uncomfortable boots I have ever worn! They are beautiful, but very uncomfortable! The boots are leather, so I expected some discomfort the first few times I wore them, but I've had worn these over a dozen times and they are as uncomfortable today as the first time I put them on. I get blisters and sores every time I wear them. I also had one of the buttons fall off, though the boots are only 2 months old. While very slow to respond, the Frye customer service team was helpful in coordinating a repair however. I have another pair of Frye boots, which I love and were definitely worth the money, but the Jayden's are a HUGE disappointment. I definitely regret this purchase.

These boots looked good, however, the size 8 I ordered was too small and the boot fits very tight around the calf. I image the calf will stretch out with wear. I am returning and hoping the 8.5 works.

These boots were made for me. After searching for over two years I found my perfect black riding boots. The quality and craftsmanship is amazing as with any Frye products. I have pretty average calves ~15 in. and ordered regular width (size 10) and the fit is perfect. Couldn't be happier with my purchase and the price. Thank you, Zappos!

A little narrow but not enough for me to say they were too tight. The calf circumference is tight. I have small calves so I generally have issues finding boots that are snug enough. I usually buy boots if the reviews say the shaft circumference is tight which reviews for this boot did and I completely agree. These are definitely for someone with a small to average calf. I love them!

These are exceptional quality leather tall boots and the Frye brand does not disappoint if you're looking for a tall, well made, more casual style riding boot. I am typicaly a 9 in shoes and always get 9.5 in boots because of a wide foot and I like to wear sox but in these, the 9.5 slipped on my heel and were loose out of the box so at the last minute I ordered the 9. I'm so glad that I did because despite it being quite tight, hard to get on and stiff at first, it loosened up within a few days and now 3 weeks later, its perfect. Regarding the calf, I did also order the wide calf and it was way too wide but these fit fine. I am active and have an athletic build with what I would consider slender but muscular calfs and I can tuck in slim pants and jeans with no problem. What I also love about these boots is that they come right up to just below my knee and other riding boots that I have tried are often too shor. I am 5'8". Fantastic price and quick shipping at Zappos!

I love these but they WILL give you blisters as you break them in, especially on the back of your heels. They’re also very stiff because of the thick leather so the first time wearing these is uncomfortable. Otherwise they are a great boot.

Just WOW! This is my first FRYE purchased. The leather was excellent quality. I love love this boots. Please keep in mind when purchasing this boots, that it is made for people who have narrow feet and small calf. My calf size is only 13" and the circumference of this shoe is 14". I was wearing a legging and it was just right. The ankle area is a little tight when I put my foot in but with a little bit of wiggling :-) I was able to zip all the way. Like I said just WOW! Thank you FRYE and thank you Zappos for the excellent CS. This one is a keeper.

These boots are perfection, and since I got them on sale an amazing deal! I had a pair of LLBean riding boots that I adored, but after heavy use for ten years they needed to be replaced. These Frye boots are the answer to my prayers. The styling is sleek and fashionable. The quality of the leather and construction is top notch. As with all quality leather boots, they were stiff and difficult to get on the first time, but after wearing a few times are very comfortable. I fully expect to be wearing these for the next 10 years.

I had been considering this Frye Boot for some time, it did not disappoint! I’m usually between a 8.0 and 8.5 so I went with the 8.5. So glad I did. From the moment they arrived, they just screamed quality, you could smell the leather, and the color black was perfect. They can either be worn with jeans or a dress. I don’t recommend them if you have large calves, they are a bit narrow in the shaft; but they work for me. I’m 5 9”, 160. The zipper is stiff, but with use it will loosen up. I have other Frye boots and they just need time. These required a little tug to get on, but once on they feel great. I got tons of compliments the first day I wore them. Just go for it, you can beat this current price.

I love the look of these boots but they just did not fit! I have two other pairs of Frye boots, 8.5 & 9. Bought these in a 9 and could not get my feet in them!!! Also then ordered in a 9.5. Could get my foot in, but couldn't zipper all the way--and I do not have large calfs. Super disappointed because I love this boot, but both are going back.

gorgeous boots, very loose at top of shaft and tight through calves (I have average size calves) so would not have been able to wear with jeans tucked in. Boot is loose through top of foot portion giving it a sloppy look, at least on me. Sad to return.

These fit perfectly from the first time I put them on--no blisters, hot spots, or other discomfort. They are very comfortable and beautifully made. I wear 9.5-10M, and the 10M are just right. A bit of stiffness in the zipper near my Achilles tendon, but that relaxed quickly. I had a pair of Frye ballet flats that were too big and never fit right, so I was a bit hesitant to order Frye footwear again, but these boots are wonderful. I have crazy-high arches, and these aren't bad in terms of support.

Pretty comfy, a lil more cushion in the sole would make them perfect!!! But they're close!

The most gorgeous leather boot ever! The dark gray is actually a great brown without any red in it. I am thrilled with the quality and comfort of this product and Zappos is by far my favorite online site.

These are gorgeous boots! I got the "dark grey smooth vintage," which could also be labeled as "taupe." They look like brown boots, basically, without any red in the brown. Like, on the "blue" edge of the "brown" spectrum. They'll go with your taupe sweaters perfectly but look somewhat brown against your grey sweaters, which isn't a bad thing because taupe and grey work together well as similarly "medium" tones. I'm 5'8.5" tall and 135 pounds, and these come to directly below my knee and look great with skinny jeans tucked in, dresses, and skirts. The one thing I'm hesitant about: underneath my Gap bootcut jeans, the boots stick out, so wearing the jeans over the boots is a no-go. Maybe other jean brands are wider at the opening, and maybe these will loosen up with wear. Maybe wearing your boots under your jeans isn't your style, anyway. To be clear: the silhouette of the boots is slim (but not skin-tight). Honestly, it seems like the perfect shaft width to go over your pants without a battle but still look polished with skirts. This is my first pair of Frye boots after almost 10 years of admiring them. I'm glad I took the plunge!

The fit was good - I am a narrowish 8 1/2 and it was perfect. Same for the narrow calf. And the leather is to die for - so rich and, unfortunately, so STIFF! After walking around on the carpet for a half hour, my ankles were really irritated where the boot buckled. No way can I put up with this for breaking in, as I don't know if this leather would ever soften up enough to be comfortable . I remember breaking in Frye boots when I was in high school, long before my feet became really tender and my tolerance for pain was greater. So sad to return these.

I liked everything about this boot except for how narrow the footbed was. I have very narrow feet but these were too narrow even for me. I have had other Frye boots much more comfortable than these. I have small calves and these fit great around the calves. I ended up sending these back and getting the Sam Edelman Womens Penny Leather Riding Boot Black which were much more comfortable and better priced.

overall, these are beautiful boots. However, my calves measure exactly 14in in circumference, and there was a large gap, so sadly, I had to send them back.
