Great fit and style. Use for daily bus commute to work as well as day hikes/travel. Only suggested improvement would be to lighten the weight.

The bag is great I'm mostly using it for office and city trips. Very all-around and versatile in urban environment. I tried hiking with it, but it's not its best use obviously due to bigger weight etc. The main advantages are excellent padding almost everywhere including the laptop/tablet compartments and the small front pocket which can be used for cellphone or glasses for example. The bottle side pockets are not so large, therefore, some wider containers might not fit or not stay firmly in place during activity. All the rest is kind of perfect for me. Maybe a waterproof version could be an improvement, but then it would be in a different price range...

I use this product mainly as a high school backpack. It has more than enough room for laptop, binders, and textbooks. I had it a year and it's been holding up nicely. Perfect school backpack. Water bottle pockets a little on the small side but will fit most.

Honestly got this bag for school, but I have ended up taken it back country snowboarding, hiking, camping, across the U.S, and even on my hunting, and fishing trips. Now I never write reviews for things however, I definitely owe it to the bag for saving the skin off my back, and shoulder when I got hit by a car on my motorcycle last October! Bag got torn up a bit, on back left side where the thinner material is, but not enough to throw it away. Still 100% functional, and I use it everyday. It's a great reminder to me how well North Face products are made. I would definitely recommend this bag to someone interested in buying it. For sizing info if you're interested... I am a 5'11, 160 lbs male, and it fits great. Extremely comfortable, and not to bad with a heavier load, or while jogging. Thanks!

Review for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
Got this for my 11 year old who started the 6th grade and needs more room for books and now a small laptop. While the bag was well made, stylish and had many of the features we were looking for; it was simply too big for her 5'0" frame. It was big for me, I thought, I'm 5'1" and 103. We had to return it although we really liked it. Was just too big.

overall this bag is awesome. I bought it for school as the bag I had before was too small. In this bag im able to fit my laptop and all the books for my 4 college classes (3 small books, 4 full sized books). The pocket for the tablet works great, however i use it for a portable battery pack. The fleece pocket for my sunglasses work great and the two vertical pockets work great for my phone charger, calculator, and etc. Would definitely recommend this backpack to others. When it comes to hiking this bag is also great. I have plenty of room for water and my camera bag fits in this bag as well. The chest strap and waist strap work great as support while on long hikes.

Great laptop bag for frequent air travel. Appears well made and durable. Well padded and comfortable. Front pockets could be revised to be more practical but overall a winner.

I used this backpack for school. I've had previous north face backpacks which I found were too small. I decided to upgrade to the surge. It's very lightweight and comfortable even when filled with heavy books.

Got this for my boyfriend and he traveled with it to Utah/Arizona. He said traveling with it is great cause it has a lot of space and its comfortable but not to hike with. It's bulky and big and made him really hot. Still great bag.

Very happy with this backpack it has plenty of room for everything I carry. I use this pack daily to bike to work, I carry lunch bag, rain gear, extra jacket my phone & still have room. The pack handles the northeast weather like a champ super comfortable & sturdy. Best backpack I have ever owned.

Backpack is very comfortable. Has numerous pockets to hold all my IT gear (numerous and various electronic gadgets). Easily accessible pockets. Made of sturdy materials. Love this item. Wish there were more color options. I love all things red!

I am a pastor and use this bag primarily for carrying my laptop, tech accessories, big books, and running clothes. It serves all it's purposes without making me look like an old stuffy unapproachable reverend. I'm only 31 and I'd like to stay young as long as I can. Plus I can use this on trips.

An avid NF user, it was time for me to update my everyday pack for cpl reasons. Most important was the legacy of reliability and privilege. My last pack I've had for 5 yrs. Flawless, fierce and fully maximized. My young son was jealous not having the luxury of ownership and so I decided to let him inherit my original pack and acquire the Surge. Two happy campers with one purchase. His smile is priceless wearing the pack to school. Pride in what was his Dad's, and what his Dad has complete and full trust in.

In general, this is a great bookbag. It has a relatively large capacity and is nicely divided and organized. I originally got this bookbag because my previous one didnt have much lumbar support. This one looked like it could give me that support i needed. Its more than I''ll ever need really but it helps that this bookbag is very versatyle - itd be appropriate for amost all occasions: travelling, hiking, commuting, etc. The only thing i do not like about this backpack is how the waist straps dangles. In an older model of the recon, they had little sleeves for which you can slide the waist straps in. I do not see why they could not incorporate something like this as well.

I ordered a smaller backpack but could not fit my daughter's lunch bag in it. We went up a size and it is perfect. Everything fits, not too big. Love this backpack. Highly recommend.

This backpack is incredible! I am such a fan! Even though I'm a woman, I didn't like the color options of the women's version so I went with the men's and I'm so glad that I did! I'm a math major and a double minor so I'm always lugging around lots of books and this makes the load seem so much lighter. Not to mention it is incredibly durable!

Used for work and travel! Makes it easy to take out laptop or iPad when going through security because each has its own compartment.

I couldn't believe how convenience the bag is. I have all my school supplies as well my lap top. This is my third back pack and I love each one off them. This one is the best. Good job NF

I use this product for school. I got it because I wanted a bag with many organizing pockets, was not disappointed. I open the package and read the label, the bag itself with nothing in it is over 3 pounds. It is heavy and I have literally nothing in it. Apart from that, many soft lined pockets, comfortable, it keeps its shape, I am not afraid to put something with value in it in fear it would break.

Love the look of this bag. When I purchased it I was really hoping that this would be the end of my search for a functional everyday work bag. I have some HUGE (to me) and minor gripes about this bag. 1.) Spaces given to carry water bottles DO NOT accommodate a 40oz HydroFlask. Get with the times North Face. Every time I bend over my water bottle comes falling out. I'm sure this is fine for the Nalgene's that were carried on campus in the early '00s but not today. 2.) The two vertical pockets on the front of this bag are barely functional (especially if you want to pack the mid-range pocket). I find myself carrying a light winter hat and gloves here. I'd much prefer this bag to feature other (or deeper) cell phone/sun glass pocket above 3.) This bag felt full and heavy with a light rain coat, light fleece and my plastic lunch container in the main "deep" pocket. I was also carrying an iPad and a UERoll blue tooth speaker. Was really hoping to be able to fit more in this bag 4.) I straight up need/want more pockets to organize stuff inside the bag. I have older model TNF bags that offered great internal organization and I don't understand why they moved away from it. MORE POCKETS INSIDE THE BAG. BOTTOM LINE: I was really hoping for more from this bag. All together it's well put together and looks great. For a bag that claims to offer lots of space I personally found it lacking.
