I purchased this backpack for school and I love it! It's just WAY too big for me. I'm 4'7" and this thing just about swallowed me, so I will be returning it to try something else. Aside from the size, it seems to be a great backpack; ample storage/space, excellent quality and pretty comfy.

I have has this for a few weeks now and it is great! It seems really durable and holds a lot of stuff. The best part is that the between the padding and the straps, you don't feel like you're carrying all the weight.

I sought a backpack for school that could fit my laptop, books, maybe lunch, and--importantly--gym shoes. For too long, I carried my gym shoes separately, or crammed them in on top of my books and then had to remove them and rearrange once I got to class to access books. With the Surge, I was disappointed that the back pocket, with the lay-flat laptop feature for airport security, was relatively small capacity (in depth from front to back; height and width are as large as the backpack), leaving only one large middle compartment for books and large gear and the medium sized pocket for writing utensils etc (in addition to smaller pockets as noted in the website description). I opted instead for the Borealis where I can secure my shoes with the bungee, since the Surge wouldn't have enough room inside, apart from my books, and lacks bungees.

I use this mostly for carting my books along with my laptop around D.C. It's just a really great, really well designed pack.

I love this backpack and will buy them again next school year! Would you be willing to consider to make this in DAPPLE GREY HEATHER/TROPICAL CORAL?

I am planning on using this as my daypack on a trip to South Africa, I am only taking carry on baggage so needed this pack to be big enough to help carry part of my luggage while in transit as well. It is going to be the perfect size for that and I really like the compartments for fast access to the necessities.

Absolutely in love with this bag! My laptop fits perfectly in the sleeve and I can fit my note in the additional pocket. The only negative is I can't fit a 2" binder and my neuro books. I was able to comfortably fit my notes, medical equipment, laptop, iPad and pen case and still feel like I had nothing in the bag! Highly recommend!

I use this pack for everyday use back and forth to work. It holds my 15" MacBook Pro perfectly. I like that there are several options for holding the pack. The pack and zippers are very durable. The only con would be that with a laptop inserted in the rear sleeve the pack will not stand up without falling forward or back. It would have been nice for the balance to be a bit better to allow the pack to stand up with a laptop in the sleeve. When driving, I use my seatbelt to keep it from flipping forward when braking.

I use this for school. I have to carry a lot(at most 3 1.5 inch binders, 3 textbooks, a couple English books, a couple folders, a pencil case, laptop(which goes in the laptop compartment, and fits fine, doesn't cause a problem), and iPad(which goes in the tablet compartment, and fits fine, doesn't cause a problem)). This backpack sort of fits everything, except that I really have to force the last few things in it. I wish there was a bigger backpack from Northface, because I would buy it in an instant. I also carry so much that I ripped part of the backpack, but I'm not sure if I want to replace it or find a bigger backpack. If anyone is considering this backpack, it's a great choice as long as you don't carry as much as I do. Even if the backpack was a teeny bit wider, that would be amazing. But, if you are considering this backpack, and don't carry as much as I do, I would get it! It's a great backpack, just doesn't fit everything I need!

I bought this backpack primarily for school which was a great decision due to its laptop sleeve and also the large main compartment. I also use the backpack if I'm spending a night or two at a friends if I have to bring several things.

This was a gift for my son. He put his laptop in it and "put it on" to test the comfort. He loves it!

Great book bag overall. Somewhat small on the inside, and zippers are somewhat hard to get to. But other than that good build.

Purchased this backpack for my daughter in college and she loves it. It is very comfortable for carrying heavy books and is heavy duty/well made so it will hold up to every day student use and abuse. Easily carries her laptop, tablet and all her books for this soon to be doctor.

Pros: - Very comfortable (owned more than 10 backpacks) - Lightweight, great hiking pack - Waist clip - Built in Whistle - Extra padding and back ventilation - TSA friend laptop pocket - Fleeced lined pocket for phones (big enough to fit my iPhone 6 Plus) Cons: - Wish there was more internal pockets. - Better fabric (1000D). - Tough to easily access items when pack is stuffed since it doesn't open all the way (Clam style) - Side clips get in the way when trying to open the main and small compartments. - Laptop compartment may not fit thicker sized laptops.

I go to college part time and work full time as a governess. Really, all that means is I carry way too many books and a laptop. This backpack gives me great support and has enough space to accommodate my books and do-dads. I wish it was a bit for durable on the handles; I don't use them and the front one is already fraying. I'm thinking it was to make the back back more appealing fashion wise because it does not effect the overall use of the back pack.. it's just ugly.

College student that will use this product to bring textbooks, notebooks, and laptop to school. I've only used it for a couple of days, but it's been great. Comfortable to wear. Lots of pockets. Plenty of storage for all my school items.

I am a guy who likes backpacks in the same way a shopaholic woman does with Kate Spades and MK's. I always appreciate backpacks with strong branding, sometimes overlooking utility and practicality (a cross I bear). But with Northface backpack Surge series, you get to have all you need in a backpack - Durability, Space, Number of pockets and compartments, and...a strong brand :) It's base weight is a little heavy which is apparent to all NF backpacks. But this is negligible when you are considering durability and weather-toughness of this backpack. I still have the first model of Surge and the only issue I ever had with it is the faded surface which is fine considering what we've been through i.e. mountain climbing to the highest peak in Northern Philippines on a stormy day (rough day). So in a way, I am expecting the same level of durability for this model. Its compartments are pretty neat and very much suited to my job which typically includes a laptop, documents, jacket, packed food, umbrella, and all the other small stuffs. They all fit well.

I've got 2 jobs at the airport so I have 2 uniforms. I am able to pack up everything I need into my SURGE Backpack for my 4 days a week double shift. I definitively do not need anything else. Isn't it awesome ?
