The shoe seems well made, but if it was meant to be a running shoe, the designers missed the mark. It is unpleasantly stiff and not supportive. Only the most determined heel strikers (those inclined to ruin their hips) might find it appropriate. Regrettably, Zappos refused to exchange for another shoe.

Plastic decal fell off less than 2 weeks after receipt. Wore less than 4 times.
Hard, clunky.

The only issue I had with this shoe was its lack of adequate cushioning and shock absorption in the heel. Even after adding insoles did not make much difference. It's a shame because it's such a good looking shoe that cost good money. So I ended up returning the shoes.
I'd also recommend:

I have been wearing the NB9900 for years, it was a great shoe. This is suppose to be the replacement and YUCK, what a lousy shoe, plastic makes it very uncomfortable, and it walks like you have steel shoes on. SHAME ON NB AND ZAPPOS.
I'd also recommend:
do not know as I been the the NB 9900 for years.

I have worn New Balance shoes for over 20 years and they normally wear very well. This current pair wore through the outer layer of the sole on the edge after only 18 miles. I wouldn't expect this type of wear for months not days. I hope this is just a bad batch of rubber and not a new trend. Trying to decide if I should order a new pair. Other than the soles, these shoes are great.

Quality is obvious, made in USA, purchased based on overwhelmingly positive reviews. For me, the shoe is too bulky, stable, and planted. It's great for walking and warming up, cross-training perhaps, but I run on my toes and like a light, fast-feeling shoe. Wish I had time to return to replace other NB pair that I love. Again, great shoe, style, quality-simply not a fit for me.

Loved the wide width but the shoe was very hard fitting around the outer foot. Could not break them in. Expected way more comfort for the price.

I like the style and stability. But I was only able to wear them comfortably for about 2-3 months. The heel area of the inside of the shoe was built in such a way that it started to pull apart. Whenever I took them on or off, it just got worse, and now they are totally shredded back there. The interior structure of the shoe is visible and the padding is just hanging there at the heel.
Yes, I take them off while they are still tied. Maybe that's bad for the shoe, but I've never had a shoe respond this way to that very common consumer practice. Never. I called up New Balance to ask about an exchange and they were just like "it's your fault, learn to take your shoes off correctly." Pretty disappointing.
So now I only wear them on occasions where I can't get away with wearing something less stable. Unfortunate. It's a great shoe but if I can't wear it anymore I can't rate it very highly.

Very comfortable but expensive $160 I am disappointed that they fell apart in less than a year. I only wore them on weekends and they started to fall apart, very quickly;1st the logo then the stiching and now the insoles are coming apart.

I have exceptionally wide toes and other NB shoes worked well. They were aced shoes. These were Velcro strapped shoes and were too tight

I was surprised at how heavy these shoes are compared to previous pairs of NB shoes I've purchased. They also seemed cheaply made. I returned these.

The workmanship is poor. Insoles are flimsy. Not worth the purchase price. The quality has been going south over the last few years.

1I have been purchasing the new balance motion control shoes for over 15 years. Each time a new model comes out I feel the quality and supportiveness of the shoe decreases. I just purchased 2 pair of the 1540 V2 and they do not feel as supportive as my old 1540's I have been wearing for the past year. I have recommended these shoes to many people over the years, but at this time I no longer feel they are worth the cost. I like the fact they are made in America. Why change a good product, go back to the 1121's or earlier models. I use these shoes for work as I am on my feet a lot as an RN.

The shoes are very attractive in appearance and the dark gray/black color looks great. The extra reinforcement over the top end of the big toe is a plus and should provide excellent durability. Overall, the shoes feel wider than the B narrow width that I am used to, including some extra width in the toe area. There is very little arch support. I believe the stiff sole tended to contribute to the heel slipping as I walked. I laced in the first extra top hole with the strings, but it made no difference in the heel slip. I added in the second top hole and that helped reduced the heel slip some, but the heel still tended to slip when I walked. I felt that for the price, the shoe performed worse than lower cost shoes, so I returned them.

Sent a "D" width and the shoe was way too large. Do not recall width being discussed because I do not think I would have agreed to a "D".

I have been wearing NB shoes exclusively for at least the last ten years. I am sorry to say that this is the fourth pair I have sent back. I sent the first pair back because all of a sudden I need a 12 instead of 11 1/2. The next three were sent back due to the way the support in the shoes felt, lumpy in odd places and an overall lack of support. They used to be some comfortable! I thank Zappos for making the transactions so easy. I guess I will have to find a new brand.

Purchased the 1540s a week-and-a-half ago and its an understatement to say I am thoroughly disappointed. To label this shoe a running shoe is false advertising. This shoe is only good for daily use as you run errands and walk around the house. How anyone could think that this shoe could be used for running, or even distance walking, is ludicrous. Yes, it is a quality built shoe with excellent motion control. It would be good for a less active person in need of stability and motion control....period. However, even for less active individuals I would be careful to recommend this shoe because the hard sole is also very slippery on wet surfaces and other non-traditional surfaces like metal plating found around some subway areas. The shoe has very limited cushioning that you don't notice until you attempt to run in it or walk long distances. It felt OK on the carpet of the store, but once it was put into action, it was horrible. Couple the poor cushioning with a very hard outer sole makes the whole shoe very inflexible....almost like wearing a wooden clog. These are just terrible shoes if you expect to use them for running or extended walking. I wasted money getting these and now I'm stuck. Don't make the same mistake.
Strengths: Quality made shoe; good looks; excellent stability; made in the USA
Weaknesses: Terribly hard and inflexible outer sole and overall shoe;; dangerously slippery outer sole; terrible cushioning; terribly uncomfortable for running or extended walking

Third Eyelet from ankle ripped again. The second pair of New Balance to do this to me. You will notice this eyelet is often reinforced some of their shoes. WHat sucks is how You have to ship them in to get a refund. Too much money to fall apart after 3 months of occasional use.

The width and length seemed right but the tops of the shoes hurt my feet. The sox bunched up and caused my feet to go numb. I am returning them today. The return process is easy so far we'll see about the refund.

Bought to replace my well worn 1122s (great shoe). Insoles already have multiple holes. Ended up replacing with my old 1122 insoles.

Might be a manufacturing defect. If I were you I would not sell these shoes to anyone. Left shoe does not fit right in the heal. The plastic heal cup on the right hand side is angle in to the shoe rather than flush to the side of the shoes. It does not matter how many socks I wear the plastic still digs into to the side of my left inside heal. I have been wearing New Balance shoes for over twenty five years and have never had a problem.

I loved 1540v1. It fit perfectly and provided stability, even with orthotics inserted in place of the normal removable sole pad/cushion. Not true for the 1540v2. Too tight in laces area, and toebox. So had to send them back and hunt for the discontinued 1540v1 online. I wish NB would come out with a v3 that fits like the v1.
