Great shoes...great service. They didn't have the 4E I was looking for, but since they were impossible to find around town, I tried the 2E. Just too narrow for me. Have bought from Zappos before and will buy from them again because of their great service. Just didn't work out this time.

I have wide very flat feet and I have worn custom orthotics for years. In the past I purchased New Balance 8.5 4E shoes and then they started getting narrower so a couple of years ago I tried the Brooks Beast and needed to go up in size to 9 / 4E and had great results. Then I needed some new shoes and I read recent reviews about the Brooks Beast being narrower so I thought I would try out several options and here are the results for me. Asics Gel Kayano 24 ordered 8.5 and 9 in 4E and both were too narrow – could barely get my foot in the shoe New Balance M1540V2 ordered 8.5 in 4E and 6E (had to order 6E direct from NB). Both were too narrow. The 6E was close but not quite wide enough. Brooks Beast ’16 size 9 / 4E. The widest of the group and I am actually using them without the orthotics and they are feeling good.

Tried this style in several sizes; I usually wear an 11.5EE in the 990s. These just weren't comfortable. The 11.5 EE was too loose and the other combinations (11.5D and 11EE) were too narrow across the instep. The tongue just doesn't have the "give" as the 990.

I have really flat feet and use orthotics. I have ankle arthritis in my left foot and have had bunion surgery on my right foot. I wish to state to New Balance, like many others have as well, I wish you would still make the 1123 which for me was the perfect shoe. The 1540v2 seems a little small in sizing so I sized up to a 14N......not an easy size to find and that is good for severe flat feet. This shoe seems to offer good support and comfort and I think it looks good too. I appreciate the good service by Zappos.

I loved the 1540 V1. They're sadly gone so I'm on my second pair of 1540 V2. They're harder in the heel than the original and I preferred the arch support of the 1540, but this is the current motion control runner, so that means I have to use them. I don't like the "clack-clack" sound that comes from the heel strikes when I walk. I like the large toebox - I think that comes from the S2 last.

They fit fine but there is practically no cushion to them. If you are looking for something for being on your feet all day I wouldn't recommend these.

Have liked 1540'someone for years. The V's are a little harder in the heel, but with my foot problems, still best for me

A comfortable and apparently well-made American shoe, though not quite as comfortable as NB 990v4. Ample room in the wide toe box. Shoes work well with custom orthotics. I would buy again.

Insoles lacked cushioning, I used insoles from an old pair of N.B. and that helped

A sturdy, stylish shoes with a nice, wide, rounded toe box. However, like virtually all New Balance shoes, they run small and narrow. I'm a 13 2E, but the 13 4E was a tad short and narrow, while the 14 2e was the perfect width but too long. If they made a 13.5, I'd buy a pair in each color. Instead, I was forced to return these. Bummer!

I've been buying these shoes for six years! They are pretty much the only shoes that are appropriate for my orthopedic needs and that come in my size (15), but they have served my needs well. I wear them all day, every day, and so I have to replace them every 6 months or so. They are great for walking, but don't provide enough cushioning for workouts.

I have had more than two pairs of these and they fit my feet very well. I wish they had a better insole considering the price of the shoe. It is too thin and doesn't have enough padding. I use a store bought insole to remedy this.

The 1540 has been my go-to training shoe for four years, ever since taking up marathon running at age 42. It's a heavy, cushiony, hyper-stabilizing shoe, the very kind much maligned by many thin-sole natural running gurus, but I love it for a number of reasons. Some people think that a shoe that's too stabilizing and cushiony reinforces bad form & bad habits, like heel-striking. But concentrating your effort mentally to keep your strike on the mid-foot is all you need to do. The extra stabilization is nice for people who pronate. But what's great about a shoe with this much guidance is that on long training runs, as you get more fatigued and your technique starts to go out the window, a shoe like this will keep you honest. This is a heavy shoe, almost 15 oz. But I found that training with a heavy shoe (especially on hills) and then running races with a light shoe like the Fante is a great strategy. I got my first ever sub four-hour marathon last year in NY, training with the big, trusty 1540 and then racing with the Fante. The 1540 is also great for on my off-day 4-5 mile training walks. I guess the only thing I wouldn't use it for is trail running or hiking, as the treads on the bottom of the sole are shallow and better suited for straight-up pavement. Otherwise, a great, underrated shoe. Train with the heavy shoe and race with a lighter one. You will pleasantly surprise yourself! :)

seems to fit great and pretty comfortable. still would be better if there was memory foam or gel in the shoes for more comfort. also a little more water resistance would be nice. water goes right into the shoes and cost a bit too much. but having wide feet this is the best fit shoe.

I wear NB shoes much of the time, both for walking and "every day". Replaces an older pair of a different model NB. The shoes support me well (220 lbs.).

Great support shoe but it was 1/2 size too small. It is a nice feature that Zappos has both narrow and 1/2 size shoes over size 12.

The shoe has great balance..I like that it comes in black, I wear the shoes not only running, but everyday wear. The bad... heel seems to wear quickly..never any savings with the 1040 on web.

I am 70 years old, 6'4", 220 pounds and wear 16 EE shoes. I walk about 3-8 miles a day and need shoes that provide comfort and support. Although expensive, the M1540v2 is the best running/walking shoe that I have found. The only complaint I have is specific to my size and it pertains to the heel cushion. With my activity level I usually crush the heel beyond needed support within four months. I am wondering if New Balance designs the heel support and resiliency specific to the shoe size?

Heel should be higher and more cushioned for that price. Otherwise a very well supported shoe.

These are really great looking shoes (the dark gray one, not the white/blue version). If want to add an orthotic insert, the extra room would be perfect. But I felt the D width was at least an E. There was also a little extra room at the toe. Because I was swimming in them, my arch (to the extent that I have one) rubbed against the insert and got irritated. If I could get this in a B width, I think it would be the perfect shoe, but they are not in stock. Fingers crossed that they come back.
