These are comfortable out of the box, as all New Balance shoes have been for me over the years. I have not worn them hiking yet, but expect them to perform well. I have worn NB sneakers for years and enjoyed every pair. The Gore-Tex models have always proven to be waterproof as well - I have put them to the test. I always have to order up a size in NB. In most shoes I wear 11B; in NB I have to order 12B and usually have extra room. However, these boots seemed to run smaller. I ended up keeping them in 13AA to get them long enough but not too wide.

I usually wear a 7.5 narrow and ordered this shoe in an 8. I am returning for an 8.5. It seems to run small. They seem very comfortable, good support, and I really like the color. I ordered grey, but the ties and part around the ankle are grey. The leather is more of a putty or taupe/grey. I think it is a great combination. The toe box is stiff so there is no way a shoe store could "bump" it to give me room. I sure hope the 8.5 fits because I was very excited to find a hiking boot that was narrow enough, especially in the heel!

So close to perfect, but the toe seams hit right at the widest part on the outside toe on one foot. Right shoes seemed fine. Had to return. (Had ordered 6.5, 4E width.)

Great boots, fit my narrow foot just right. I ordered both my normal size & a size up, due to very long toes. The size up is the one I kept to have plenty of room for my toes especially for hiking downhill. Very comfortable & don't need a very long breaking period.

Love the color. I always buy New Balance hiking shoes. I have narrow feet and orthodics for plantar fascitis. They are the only brand that fit my feet. In most shoes, I wear a 7.5. In New Balance hikers, I always need to buy a size 8. The arch support is really good when I add my orthotics.

I have looked high and low for hiking boots. These accomodate all my foot issues and my inserts. Have worn them on a couple of short hikes. So far so good. Thank goodness for wide width. A little higher ankle support would be good, but the will do the job. Good traction.

I wore them hiking in North Carolina last week! They are wonderful!

Love the shoes. Sturdy, lightweight. My orthotics fit well. I did have to exchange for a wider shoe. I usually take 6D, but needed a WW with these.

I was so happy to find waterproof shoes in extra wide width! I have wide feet and bunions and these actually have room to spare - I got them in 4E width. After reading reviews I ordered a half size larger than my normal size, but I don't think this was necessary due to the wide width. Because I will be wearing heavy boot socks with them I decided to keep them, but next time I would just get my regular size if the 4E width is available.

Great "boot" for hiking, slush and snow. Truly waterproof, great ankle support for hiking, warm for winter wear but not too hot for nice weather hiking. I have a wide foot and need a large toe bed this boot fits well even with my orthotic in. Bought a second pair in a different color!

I can't begin to tell everyone how much I LOVE LOVE these boots! I am on my feet for 8 hours a day, on solid concrete and it is tough on my feet. I have tried a lot of sneakers and boots through Zappos and nothing compares to these! I first bought the grey ones, thinking they would be too tight since I am used to mesh sneakers for work. But was I wrong! I feel such stability and comfort that I ordered the brown ones a week later! Width and size were perfect for my 4E feet, it was worth the money!

I am very disappointed that New Balance has discontinued the hiking boots #978 that I have been wearing for the past few years in a size 8.5. These new ones are much, much smaller, seem more like 7.5, and also seem thinner overall. Why can't they stick with a good thing?

I absolutely love these boots. I received them the day before I was going to New York City. I wore them around the house for the better part of three hours deeming them OK. They were absolutely fantastic walking miles a day in the city, keeping my feet warm, dry and comfortable. I have custom orthodics that fit into them nicely. I have never left a review before but felt I had to for these. I like them so much, I ordered the brown color as well. They are great winter boots.

These are fantastic! My feet have never been so comfortable...wide, sturdy, warm...insert friendly...purchased my husband a pair for Christmas as we have similar wide feet! Hopefully he will enjoy them as much as I do.

I ordered these for an upcoming trip to Arizona. When they arrived, I found I hadn't ordered the correct size and I called to see about returning them. The people were so very helpful, I returned the wrong size and received the correct size within 2 days. I love them - they are so very comfortable. I wear them all the time!

I normally wear a 10 Wide, but ordered these in 11 Wide considering I'd be wearing heavier socks with them and after reading reviews. They are perfect!

These are absolutely the most comfortable shoes I have ever had, so much so, that I ordered a second pair. I have very wide feet and have had a hard time finding shoes that don't hurt. I am also happy with Zappos service, it only took two days to receive these shoes! Thank you.

Love my shoes...I have a difficult foot to fit, and always find what I need at Zappos. Their customer service is THE BEST! I am a returning customer, again and again!

I have worn these a few times so they really aren't broken in yet, they are a little stiff but wearing them several hours while working, they are very comfortable and my feet do not hurt. I find them to be sturdy, protective, comfortable, supportive shoes. Mostly I wear them to work outdoors on our country place. I wanted leather shoes that came in a narrow width and weren't too heavy. I did order a half size up from a normal shoe size. I have worn New Balance athletic shoes (which I also get a half size up) and a pair of their Cobb Hill brand casual shoes and have been satisfied with them. I expect these will hold up well, but realize only time and many wears will determine this.

Width was great, but it felt shorter than a size 7 and my big toe was jammed to the edge. Want to try a size 7.5, but none in stock with Zappos.

I thought I'd never finding a narrow hiking shoe, and then I found these. They really fit, they're comfortable, but I did order them 1/2 size bigger. Not beautiful, but when you need comfort and support, beauty is hardly relevant.

Believe the other reviews that say this boot runs one size short. I can sometimes wear a 10 1/2, so I thought I'd be fine even if the 11 ran a little short. I was wrong. The 11 felt as though it was a full size too short.

This is an excellent boot. My wife wore it during our recent trip to Alaska and found it comfortable, supportive and water tight.

This boot was extremely comfortable. Without even breaking them in was able to do quite a bit of walking the first time in them. They look nice and felt great.

The boots feel good. I have a very narrow foot and will need to wear heavy socks with these boots, even though I ordered a AA width. No problem, I like wool socks for hiking.
