I bought a pair of these probably six years ago and they were great. They lasted long, felt good and the quality was good. I got a pair last fall and it is not the same quality I was disappointed.

I have been wearing the M993 for many years and was quite disappointed when I learned that New Balance had discontinued them. I was advised that the M990 would be an improvement on the M993. I have found the M993 to be close to the M990 but not quite as comfortable and they appear to be less sturdily made (I see the stitching inside the show already coming apart, something that never happened in my M993s after a much longer period of time). In summary, the M990 appears to be a cheaper less comfortable replacement for the M993.

The shoes fit great but the tongue is too short for the shoe. When I slip on the shoe, I have to pull on the tongue to get in the proper position. Nevertheless, that issue not with standing, the shoes are very comfortable and fit correctly for my feet. I deducted 2 stars from the 5 overall rating because of the tongue issue. The tongue of the 993 is the proper size but I do believe this shoe is not available anymore.

I don't think these are an improvement on the prior generation. They did fix two issues: better cushion, and the top of the toe box near the big toe doesn't appear to be as prone to wear. On the other hand the arch support, which has always been just adequate, now slips to more like borderline-adequate. The biggest issue is that the tongue is poorly anchored and slips to the side, which for a shoe this expensive is just inexcusable. You have to resort to some creative lacing to keep it in place, and that in turn makes the shoe more tricky to get the right lace tension. Overall, though each shoe has its pro's and con's, for my money the prior generation is the slightly better shoe.

I was disappointed with the arch support on these. After reading many reviews I thought they'd be perfect, but back they go.

This shoe doesn't quite have the stability control I was looking for. Description says it's built for the moderate overpronator, but that's an exaggeration. As soon as I put them on, I could feel my ankles turning in. Other than that, they have great cushioning and are pretty comfortable. Still, I will be returning them for shoes with better motion control.

These shoes don't look nor feel like they're worth the amount they're sold at. The shoes don't have enough support. Returning them.

Comfortable but very poor stability for a shoe in this price range. Still looking for a New Balance shoe. Love the fact they are USA made.

I purchased NB shoes. They are very comfortable.. but as I wore them on the second day, I noticed they had and awful smell. I washed them and the smell got even worse ?? I almost passed the heck out. I removed the sole and replaced them.. that didn’t make a difference. That odor is there to stay , so I tossed them out.

I purchased a pair of 574 outdoor activists. The shoes fit well and are very comfortable. However immediately after putting them on and trying to lace them up the metal lace loops at the top of the shoe pulled out of the left shoe. They're supposed to be held in place by a rivet. These were missing the back part of the rivet. I called new balance customer service and they wanted me ship the shoes back which is fine but they wouldn't ship me a new pair of shoes unless I made another order. Then they would process the return and refund my money for the first order at some point. This is unacceptable New Balance expects their customers to finance their mistakes. Most online retailers would immediately ship a replacement for a defective item without generating a new order and charging the customer twice. I didn't bother shipping the shoes back I just laced them through the holes where the rivets should have been. This will be my last Order with Newbalance.com. Poor customer service, terrible return / exchange policy and god awful quality control. You'd think being a new customer receiving a defective product they'd want to make it right. No effort was made on their part.

Love the fit and comfort - but 2 out of 3 pairs I've owned develop the smell of cat urine after a couple of years. Impossible to wear them after that. Any advice?

I thought the high cost of New Balance would be reflected in the comfort and agility of the sneaker, but with this particular pair, it couldn't be further from the truth. The made in USA pride is a noble intention, but they are not better made and the ridiculous cost is what pays for American craftsmanship. I bought a pair of cheaper New Balance sneakers, in the range, and they faired better. The color scheme on these shoes is what attracted me to them, but the color faded quickly. The back of my shoes developed a kink or dent in them from slipping them on pre-tied, which I do with all sneakers, like most people do at least some of the time, but these sneakers couldn't handle it though. I was just reviewing my past Zappos purchases and when I saw how much I paid for what is now my least comfortable pair of shoes, I had to write a review.

I bought these shoes to help my knees while walking to work everyday. Living in New York City I do a lot of walking and these shoes simply cannot handle the work. I walked on average 2½ to 3 miles a day, and after only six months of use, I have worn completely through the sole of the shoe straight to the foam under-layer. For this price, these shoes are a massive disappointment. I had my walking style analyzed at a running store many times, there is nothing awkward, no twisting or dragging, and yet these shoes seemed to have disintegrated. I have a pair of Bass ankle boots that have held up for three years with their rubber soles and those cost much less. What is going on with sneaker soles these days, nothing lasts. My dad still has a pair of sneakers from the 80's, I would be lucky to have a pair from eight months ago.

I've been a long time New Balance user, since 1981. I've always worn the 990s series shoes. The best one was the discontinued 992. These 990v3s are the worst shoe I've ever worn from New Balance. They feel like I'm running on cement blocks. Where's the cushioning? These are advertised as a neutral cushioned shoe! I do not have the cat pee problem but I would take that in place of the cement block thing. I'm moving on after 34 years, going to try a different company. It's too bad they had to discontinue the best shoe they ever made.

My son was so excited to get these shoes. He wore the for the first time today to classes. He received many compliments. Unfortunately after a short time of wear (the first day) the bottom of the shoe separated almost entirely off! Will return these shoes and try again.

I have been buying New Balance sneakers for my wide footed husband for years. For years, EEE was perfect. What has happened to New Balance sizing? even the EEEEE are too narrow and pinch him in the toe box area! Reading other reviews of New Balance,I see I am not the only person complaining! Get with it, New Balance, peoples' feet are not getting smaller, they are getting bigger! I have now ordered and returned EVERY SINGLE pair of super wide New Balance sneakers I have see and NONE fit properly!

I have had the occasion to buy this product previously. It fits to length but not to width. The quality of the sole of this shoe has declined substantially. Even a replacement of the inferior insole would not help. This particular shoe has become an inferior, overpriced product. It is not recommended.

Really loved the fit on these shoes and the styling fit my tastes. Unfortunately, the durability seems a bit sub-par. Within the first 2 weeks of wearing I had sole peeling problems, I wasn't using these as running shoes either. Received a replacement pair that did the same peeling, on the opposite shoe. Have chosen to return the 2nd pair as well.

It's a good shoe overall, however once it starts to smell like cat urine as other people have mentioned it is impossible to make them smell normal again. I tried washing them in lysol, bleach, febreeze, and pet stain cleaner. I even tried streaming them, but nothing could get the smell out. These shoes were way too expensive too just throw out but I just can't wear them.

This is my third pair of 990s. The first two were great, but the bottom of the heel on this pair is falling apart. It's like there is nothing under the sole to support it. Pieces are falling off. Very disappointed in New Balance.

Don't buy these shoes unless you have no sense of smell. They smell absolutely horrible after a couple months. Like it seriously smelled like there was a dead animal in my closet.

Not worth the price. I have owned several pairs of these shoes. I have had my most recent pair for about two months wear them daily for walking. I usually get about a year of use. I don't see that in this pair as the sole has delaminated from the heel already and the front portion near ball of foot has worn off the waffle pattern already and shows an early wear pattern. Definitely not up to what I have become accustomed to for New Balance quality.

I have been a New Balance loyalist for over 30 years. But, I must say, that the company is trying my patience. This 993, at over $140, pales in quality and durability to its predecessors (any 99X). The 993, while still comfortable, gave up any reasonable usability after less than 200 miles of moderate road work (4-8 miles, five days a week). The forefoot was worn flat and the faux-carbon "midplate" began to shred within the first 50 miles. The shame is that the shoe's upper appears virtually new (except for a 'toe hole' in the mesh, which was easily patched). The heel also held up well. But half a shoe does not a happy runner make. An Inferior mid and forefoot outer, extraneous vinyl and plastic promotions on the tongue and heel only serve to make the 993 a much less serious performer than its ancestors.
