If you have extremely wide feet with flat arches, this is the shoe for you! The only thing is the widest width, 6E, is a little narrow. I recommend going up 1/2 a size. I bought a size 10 6E. It was too snug on my left foot. But the shoes lasted 6 months and I run every day! I recently bought a pair of Brooks Beast's. They are nowhere near as comfortable as these made by New Balance.

I am 400lbs and have a left foot that swells daily. I work in retail and are on my feet constantly, and wear a size 15; most either don't fit or do not hold up. These shoes are light weight and offer a great deal of roll resistance. A few things to note: 1. The shoes are mostly mesh, so they air out quickly, but aren't warm in winter. 2. Despite coming in very wide sizes, NB did not change the "tongue" size, so your socks can be seen around the "tongue" if your foot is very swollen. 3. The highly reinforced roll bar can be felt cutting into the sides of your heel the first few days until you get used to it. Overall, I am a shoe company nightmare, and these shoes have done well. I have been quite impressed and would buy another pair.

These are great shoes. They fit great, I like them half a size bigger. I have these in white. My problem is that the the tongue slides down into the shoe. I am trying but they are not working like they should. I have a different pair in leather and they work great. The fabric is great because it is lighter, but not in the tongue.

Got these to replace my 1123s. Prefer the 1123s definitely, but these will do. Based on other reviews, I went a 1/2 size up that what I wore in the 1123s, and am glad I did. Could have even gone a full size.

Like some other reviewers, I found this new model, replacing the wonderful 1123, a real disappointment. Unfortunately, with a very wide foot, high instep, narrow heel, and a propensity to pronate, there are very few viable choices of running shoes on the market for me. First, as some others have reported, I found that I had to move up one-half size to give my toes and instep enough room (and then it was barely enough). This was surprising given the wonderful fit I had with years of 1123's, and the manufacturer's claim that the same last was used on this model. It may be that the same last was used, but the construction is not the same. Instep space has clearly been reduced. Even with the laces let out to allow the shoe its widest possible opening, in a half-size larger shoe, it is still tighter than the old 1123. The sole bottom surface is also shorter (by my measurement about 3/8 inch), reducing the stability of the platform and its ability to control pronation. I now have to pay attention to my foot contact or I start to go back to pronating. Finally the heel area seems to be wider; so much so that I am having trouble with some of my socks wanting to work their way down so that the sock's heel ends up under my foot. I will experiment with lacing to try to correct this tendency, but am not sure now what will work. One thing I find annoying: The overly large "N" logo on each side of the shoe is a glued-on plastic device. In motion, the plastic tips of the shoe laces hit against the logo making a continual and rather loud clicking sound as you go. A workout should essentially be a quiet thing, but not with these shoes. Everyone can hear you coming from some distance away. I do wish New Balance would bring back the original 1123.

I did alot of shopping since my foot is wide and has plantar Faciatis. I found the M1540 very comfortable. MY only complaint is the tongue of the shoe works its way back into the shoe. I am constantly pulling it out! It's very annoying. It also seems to be "cheaply" made as compared to other NB shoes I have owned. For me, it's getting harder to find a good, solid, well-built WIDE tennis shoe. Hopefully, NB won't degrade their quality any more than they have.

These were purchased for my husband, who is diabetic. They are wide enough to accommodate his orthotics, and are deep enough in the toe box to avoid top-of-toe rubbing.

I have a very high in-step. Almost impossible to find a fitting shoe. While this shoe could still use a little more in-step, it is very good - much better than I expected.

Not as comfortable as the model being replaced. Order one half size larger for length, widith is correct. Overall quality is less than the last model.

Got these to replace the discontinued 846. They work well with my custom othotics even without removing the insole. The sole is not hour-glass shaped which makes it look a little clunky, but the shoe is stable and comfortable. I walk about 30 miles a week on concrete. I tried the MW 927 at the same time. In the same size, it was about 1/3 inch longer. The insole was thicker and had to be removed to accomodate my orthotic. There was an odd discomfort just in front of the ball of my foot at the arch of the toes as I walked which caused me to reject the 927 in favor of this shoe.

Shoes look good and fit well, but smell like mothballs. Quality control problem with dyes or adhesives. The White model doesn't seem to have this problem. Black shoes are being returned.

These shoes do not run true to size. They are tight in the toe box and shorter than any size 13 I have ever worn. They have loosened slightly with wear, but remain uncomfortably tight on the toes after several months of occasional use.

The 1540s are clunkier looking than the 990s; they are cheaper look and feel; they do not fit as well. I cannot figure out why New Balance even offers this model. I returned them.

A good average product overall with stability being the strongest attribute. Tongue wanders, and sole wears quickly.

I bought these shoes because they are known for having excellent support. Indeed, they do, but there is a slight loss of style because of it. The souls are somewhat bulky, even though the entire shoe is very comfortable. I have a pretty rough case of planter fasciitis and the shoes have helped with the addition of a Birkenstock insole. I guess my point is that with all the jazzy styles that are out there now, including the bright orange and green shoes, these are styled a little bit older. But I have to say that I like it that way. If you don't want to look like a guy walking on neon shoes, then these are great.

Zappos service is the best. However, NB should bring back the 1123; far superior to the 1540. Bring back the 1123! I would be willing to buy 10 pair.

The tongue was 1 1/2 inches too short and retreated towards the toe after several minutes of wearing. I tried several tying combinations to prevent this. Will not be buying these again.

Very disappointed! First the "Good," this shoe is made well. Now the "Bad," the heel feels like it is made out of a steel block. I could not have this shoe on for more than ten minutes. These shoes will be returned. I may have them send me another pair to see if it was a defect. Overall the shoe is what I'm looking for. Thanks Zappos!

I took a chance on the m1540 after being a longtime 993/990 New Balance customer (mainly due to the all black, work friendly styling). I ended up returning these shoes after trying the E, EE, and then 4E width in an attempt to get the right fitting shoe. I found that no matter how wide the model that the width at the arch was too tight. The wider models only felt as though they got wider at the front. For me, these shoes felt as though the inside of my foot arch was always spilling over the edge, causing discomfort after being on my feet all day for work. I ended up returning all three width sizes and going back to the 990.

I have very flat feet and the new balance SL2 last has always worked for my feet. The 1123 has worked well for me and fit with no break-in. Not so with this model. I had to exchange my usual size for a 1/2 size larger and a size wider. I have sore spot near my little toe on one shoe. This never happened with the 1123. Note to New Balance: Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

I liked these at first because of the wide toe box which is hard to find. They felt stiff but I figured they would "break in" after awhile. It has been several months, and these shoes still feel boxy and uncomfortable. I am going back to the NB 991 which was unavailable when I bought the 1540.

I like the looks of these shoes, but that's where it ends. They felt okay when I tried them on at home but when I wore them on the street, my toes were banging into the front of the shoe. Definitely not true top size,. I hate to say it because I have relied on New Balance forever because I have extra wide feet (4E), but New Balance has been wildly inconsistent with sizing and width, which is a shame. Some are slightly long and too narrow and some are correct width and too short. It's been happening more than ever. They need to tighten up quality control.

Very poor quality, should have returned them when I had the chance. The shoe lasted almost a whole 3 months and are completely falling apart. I don't run or do anything abusive in the shoe, just normal everyday walking. If another shoe company made my shoe size I would never buy a New Balance again but since they make a 4E I'm stuck with this over priced, foreign made (read the fine print) garbage.

I am beginning to wonder if New Balance "motion control" is worth the price! I'll explain. I have a severe pronation problem in one foot, the result of a spinal-cord injury. For years I relied on New Balance's older (1240?) model to withstand the "rolling" motion of my foot. But they replaced the older model with the 1540, and, sorry to say, it's not so great! I recently purchased two 1540s, and had to return one because it had lousy motion control. I was literally walking on the side of my shoe! The other pair is somewhat better, but not great. I kept it because I had no other choice. Memo to New Balance: your quality control stinks! For the price you need to produce a shoe that performs as advertised all the time, not 50% of the time. Thankfully Zappos free-return policy saved the day! But New Balance 1540 is a major disappointment.

I bought these shoes because they are black and they fit my orthotics. Hallux limitus feet. Do not help so much, recommended by my podiatrist. Stuck with them now. Too expensive for basically a pair of tennis shoes.
