I, also, am 5'6" and weigh 138. The size 8 was bearable but I prefer to have a little more breathing room without having to suck in my waste to button the primary button. Plus, the extra waist buttons on the back allow you to take up the extra space in a larger size and adjust to fit with the buttons if necessary. You can't, however, adjust to make them larger. Going to try a size 10 or maybe even 12.

I just love these. I have a little bit of a belly that is nicely covered by the cut of these shorts. They are a great length for someone who is in between daisy dukes and grandma shorts. I wish they had more colors!

Great shorts! I wore them around Italy when it was hot, and I felt cool and comfortable. My daughter said the back pockets make them look like I'm wearing them backwards though. That's why I gave the style 4 stars. I didn't care. I just wanted shorts that were easy and light.

I love these shorts. I have them in every color. I am curvier. I have a small waist and bigger hips/thighs and finding shorts that fit my body type and are flattering can be a frustrating proposition. These worked perfectly for me.

I bought these for my 20 year daughter who had to wear longer shorts for work. She likes the light material but they are a little snug in the rear if you are shapely. I gave four stars for comfort and style due to being a straight cut. Otherwise she really likes them and the lenghth is professional enough.

I don't know what the other reviews were stating when they said these ran big...they do not. I'm a standard 8 with a flat tummy and the waist was very tight! These are going back.

These are awesome! Just tried mine on, in black, and I plan to exchange some North Face tan ones that arrived in the same box for the tan in this style. I'm 5'7, 140 pounds and the 8 is a perfect fit. Short but modest length, perfectly reasonable for hiking and maybe even for biking. The fabric, being quick-dry, is a little crinkly-feeling, but they look classy.

I wore these shorts to the zoo today and I am happy to say they did pretty well on a hot, humid Florida day. The fit was a little odd but not terrible; the legs flare out more than I'd like and the waist gaped a bit. I tried using the second set of buttons at the waist but it made the back of the shorts pucker too much. I bought a size 6 and have 38" hips and a 26.5-27" waist. In the end I just tugged them a bit lower and dealt with it. The best part about these shorts is that they still look unworn even after a day of sweating and pedaling a tour bike around. No chafing after said bike ride is awesome, too. I'm thinking of getting them in another color.

I so much wanted to like these! I have a curvier figure (bigger bum, smaller waist) and these shorts just didn't work. I ordered the size 8 and they fit perfectly in the hip/thigh, but were about 2 sizes too big in the waist. I had to return them.

These are very well made and comfortable shorts but I returned them because the length was too short for me. I got them for hiking and I didn't think they looked good on me.

I love these shorts. Fit well. Great for travel. The only thing I don't like is that the back pockets do not lay flat.

Im 5’4” 123# and ordered size 4 based on the size chart. These were way too big, quite wide leg openings. I returned them.

These shorts are cute and a great material, but they didn't work for me. If you have an hourglass figure with a small waist and curvy hips, they would probably work for you. I have a straighter figure and found the waist a little too tight on the size 6, although it fit me well in the hips and legs but was huge all over when I sized up to an 8.

What a disappointment! While I love the fabric, waist fit and hip fit--the inseam was much longer than 5 inches and much longer than the picture indicates therefore I'm sending them back!

The fit was fine; it did not gap in the back which I was thrilled about. But I quickly learned this fabric does not give at all. I thought it might have 2% lycra or something to allow for movement, but it feels like wearing a tent :-( Also, the pockets have very strong velcro closures, both the front pockets and the back pockets. If you like your pockets strongly closed, you will like these shorts, but I often slip my phone into my back pocket, and the back pocket is always... CLOSED, so I would have to rip that pocket open very time I want to slip my phone in quickly. Sadly, these shorts are neither convenient nor comfortable. :-(

I ordered 2 sizes, and have not decided which to keep. I may end up keeping both to be sure at least one will fit regardless of weight fluctuations. I find the pants and shorts in this brand to run small, so one pair is a size larger than my norm, the other 2 sizes larger. The quality is very good.

Fit is great!

The shorts are true to size. The fabric is great, and the pockets are wonderful. I wish they made a pair just like these with a slightly longer inseam. But that is a personal preference not a negative. If you want a pair of shorts lots of pockets, these are the ones for you

What can I say , I love Royal Robbins , this summer I got several, these backcountry shorts, the jammer shorts , the capris and the discovery shorts. They are well made, have lots of pockets , and feel very comfortable. The material is soft and cool. for reference, I am 5'6" and 130lbs. and in my 60's. I usually get the medium and size 10 or 8 and the fit is roomy, which I like.

I had to return the first pair, as the stitching was defective. But the second pair is great. The pockets (all SIX) are huge and deep. They wash and dry super fast and are very comfortable.
