I have been purchasing 1 or 2 pairs of the Melton cap toe for the past several years and I'm normally pretty pleased with the wear and performance -- especially for the value. With the last two pairs, though, I've experienced cracking at the crease just below the laces that started almost immediately after purchase. I regularly use shoe trees and in this case they did nothing to prevent the creasing and cracking. I'll be giving them one more try and then I'll be moving on to another brand.

I was a huge fan of a different pair of dress shoes I bought from J&M last year but they were discontinued! I was looking for a similar style and settled on the Melton. The biggest con is how quickly they wear out! I only wear them twice a week and walk a few blocks from the train station to the office and I had to replace tips and heels (about $45) in just a matter of months!

Average comfort level - A nice looking shoe that seems to be on target for size and width. Just not comfortable after a long day of wearing - especially if you’re on your feet a lot (like when dancing).

Good looking shoe...but runs narrow - This is a very classy looking dress shoe. It would be a perfect shoe if it were as comfortable as it is good looking. Bought these 1 year ago for my dear hubby...and unfortunately they have been sitting in the box much more than he has worn them. He has a medium width foot...but he complains that they are just too narrow. Still kept them in case he had an occasion he just had to have a black dress shoe.

Melton - I have these two pairs of this style shoe and ordered another. These shoes are not the same as previous pairs owned. They are the same size, but fit differently and are longer. I could not tell until I actually wore them for the day they just were not as comfortable and too big. Would try to return or exchange if I could.

A good looking shoe. It does not fit my foot too well. Seems to have little support, particularly in the arch. I plan to try to improve this with an orthotic.

Shoes had been worn quite a bit with scuff marks on teh side and worn souls, other than that the shoe is great just not as wide as I needed. Other variations of J&M are wider when 'x-wide', these, although 'x-wide', were I'd say a full width thinner, more like just regular wide.

The shoe is not the same quality and feel of Italian calfskin leather. It looked like. A patent leather shoe. I've purchased your dress shoes for years and the workmanship and quality is just not the same.

I do love the look of the shoe, but they are undoubtedly too tight and stiff on the foot.

I wish you offered a 4E width! After a while the shoe strings loosen when they should remain tight after they've been tied.

I am retired now. When I was working I used to wear Johnson Murphy all the time to work. In this days we had a Johnson Murphy store in Austin. I always made sure the shoe fit before I left the store. I bought this pair on line. If we still had a store in town I would never have walked out with this pair. I think I can make these shoes work for me by using oversized shoe trees and stretching the shoes to make them just a bit wider. If not I will simply throw them away or give them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I do not like the tongue being sewn to the side of the shoe. It is very inconvenient. From past experience, this is a very good shoe.

Runs narrow. The tongue is stitched to the side, which is not good for me because I wear a full orthopedic insert.

Let me start by saying your customer service has been great so far! But the shoes are not made like they used to be made. We ended up ordering a second pair with EEE width. They still were too narrow. The pair of J&M cap toes my husband wears now is 10E and when compared against each other, the sizes differ by an obvious amount. We returned them.

Have worn this shoe for years in my corporate life and found them comfortable and versatile. However, this recent pair I purchased on sale are very stiff. The crease formed on the right shoe is digging into my big toe causing a sore spot. Am trying shoe trees to stretch the shoe top in the hopes that will stretch the crease and eliminate the discomfort. Otherwise, a good looking shoe that goes with just about everything even light blue jeans and a blazer.

The shoe is absolutely difficult to lace and get on. I have no idea why J&M thought it was a good idea to permanently attach one side of the tongue to the side of each shoe.

I’ve had other J&M shoes and loved them. First tried these one and they were a little tight and thought they might stretch but that’s not the case. These shoes absolutely feel like they are breaking your toes. Had I not worn them already they 100% would be going back. They look nice but if you can’t wear them or get them to break in who wants to look at them in the closet?

Too small and rubbing blisters on my feet. They haven't broken in and I've worn them 3 times. Same with the other pair I ordered. I love J&M shoes, all I've ever worn.

Very disappointed that the flannel cloth to shine the shoes is dirty as if someone else had this box of shoes. Never expected anything like this from Johnston and Murphy

Shoes are very hard, shoes make noise when walking, the super hard leather is stiff and uncomfortable and causes blisters. Looks like your company used to make quality shoes in the old days but quality has gone down the tubes. Look Is okay, but don't like that the tongue is stitched to the vamp. Very hard leather, and shoes come unlaced which is inconvenient.

The tongue is sewn onto one side of this shoe. This makes the tongue unflexible. As I took a step, this inflexibility caused the edge of the tongue to stab painfully into the area where my instep meets my ankle. Rather than taking the time to try and break in the shoes, I returned them.
