Very wide, comfortable show -
This is a great shoe for those who have a very wide toe box--like me. These are probably the most naturally wide shoe that New Balalance makes. This shoe provides very excellent motion control and stability. I am a severe supinator--very high arch, shoes wear on the outside. My only complaint is that they don't provide as much cushioning as I would like. I just bought another shoe in the same last (SL 2), the 1122. They feel good, not as wide, but have more cushioning. Still, it's hard to find a more comfortable, roomy shoe as the 587.

Great running shoes -
I am on my way for the third pair. I have been jogging for 12 years (3 miles at a time and three times a week) and this is the best running shoe that I have ever had. It is lightweight, breathable (very), supportive, comfortable, made in USA, and comes with different width. Highly recommended!

New Balance's M 587 NV -
These are great shoes. They are the most comfortable I have ever ran in. I am temporarily over-weight and these are the first shoes that did not hurt my knees, ankles and feet while running. A great trainer that I am sure to not experience any injury set backs.

Cool Shoes -
Old school... very cool.
If you normally wear EE width with NB running shoes the D witdh is probably right with this shoe.

Solid shoe -
This is a well built shoe with solid motion control. It is a very good shoe for larger runners. I'm not wild about the look, but the performance is just so great it is easy to look past.

587s -
Kind of a homely shoe at first, but the look grows on you because of the support and comfort. The SL-2 last makes the toe area nice and roomy. I wish I could wear the faster looking New Balance shoes but at 235 lbs, I need the support. Great job, New Balance!

Awesome!!!
Wow, these shoes are the most comfortable I've ever owned. I used to buy the cheaper New Balance models, but after I started wearing these, I can't go back to those others. It's gotten to the point where these are the only shoes I'll wear, and I own about 10 pairs of athletic shoes. I fully recommend.

Best I've ever had -
I've been wearing the 587 for more than a year. I've never had a pair of shoes for which the heels didn't get worn down on one side, creating pain in my foot. The salesman said this is due to the rollbar. Well, it really works.
I use it with an orthotic, and I just wish New Balance made it in leather so it wouldn't look so much like a sneaker for wearing it to the office.

Poor SupportGreat Support
These provide good support for walking and sprinting. These were recommended by my podiatrist, and I can see why. The mesh on the front is very good to maintain aeration in the summer. Overall, these are good support/stability shoes for my wide forefoot and I would certainly buy them again.

These shoes are incredibly comfortable and have a nice, classic look to them. My only complaint is that my right shoe now makes a lot of noise. I'm guessing it's because the plastics came loose inside the shoe and now you can hear me walking from anywhere in the house.

Good shoe for pronators.
Overall, this shoe is very good for runners who are also relative pronators. Has excellent arch and general midfoot support. Can accommodate inserts, if needed and/or metatarsal pads. Lacing is very good, allowing the ability to differentially adjust over entire midfoot. Lasting appears to be strobel. Excellent shoe for those of us with wide feet; toe box is generous without excessive movement. Ankle support is very good with cushioning. Material breaths well. Look is slightly retro. No options in terms of color; however, the blue-grey is relatively neutral.

Good shoe for heavier runner -
I've been through close to a dozen pair of this model over the last decade. They are still extremely stable and absorb lots of shock from a guy who's 250+ lbs. Because of the high heel they set your ankles up a little higher up than most other shoes.

First shoe from NB I've bought that was shorter than listed. It feels about a quarter size too small.

Roomy and well ventilated -- Looks aren't great -
This shoe would be perfect for me if it was designed for a neutral gait rather than over-pronation. My feet tend to be thrown too much to the outside. I keep wearing it because it is the only shoe I have found that is roomy enough for my foot. I am a woman with wide foot and very high instep. I tried the woman's model of this shoe in wide and it was too tight. I don't think this shoe is very attractive although it's not disgustingly gaudy like a lot of athletic shoes. It is designed for men so maybe the look of this shoe would appeal to them more.
I can't comment on the arch support since I wear orthotics in the shoes.

Disapponited over-pronator -
Got these on the advice of my podiatrist after being fitted for orthodics to correct severe over pronation. Been a NB fan for years and had high expectations but these were a bit of a disappointment, especially for the $$. Not nearly enough cushioning, only fair support and the color combo leaves much to be desired. Thinking of trying the Brooks Beast 6 next.

A wide shoe, even in narrow sizes -
I have a very narrow foot which this shoe--available in a 'B' width--tries to accomodate; however the toe box is still very wide. It is a very comfortable shoe and wears well--it won't break down right away--but its hardly the most comfortable shoe on the market. It feels a bit stiff at times, but I'm very hard on shoes so it gets better as you wear it. I normally wear size 10.5, but size 10 in this shoe was even a bit larger than what I normally wear. It is also a somewhat heavy shoe and looks bulky which may or may not suit your preference. It breathes better than most shoes b/c of the mesh above the toe box.

I've tried the others-
I've tried the other brands, New Balance is the only company that seems to know the dynamics of the foot in motion. Their shoes don't cause any of the problems I experence with other brands.

As a wide-footed over pronator, these shoes are exactly what I need. The look took a while to get used to, but my sister said they look "retro" and that's the trend now.

Average...
I am an avid runner. I run both sprints and distance. Having owned both these shoes, the 990's, and a variety of other runner shoes, I can safely say that if you are buying a pair of shoes to run in, do not go with the M587's. They just don't offer enough lateral support that is needed. Also, the sole is enormous, which makes for a kind of awkward shoe. Finally, they just don’t fit the way the 990's did. They are not as snug, and they roll out easily. If you are buying a running shoe, I would definitely go with the Asics Gel-Kayano, a much better shoe all around.

Upon opening the box and trying these shoes on, I returned them. Shoes are very wide for a "B".I would need at least two pairs of socks to make these work. Excellent customer service at Zappos.

I bought these on a recommendation...
...and I sort of regret it. I got the M587 for walking and standing all day at work. At 270, I'm pretty heavy, and I have a very pronounced heel strike when I walk, but these absolutely have to be the hardest, most unforgiving athletic shoes I have ever worn. The width and size were pretty much perfect (in fact, these are the widest shoes I have ever found--I ordered a 4E, but these felt wider), but I just can't get over that silly "rollbar" thing NB puts in the heel. It may as well be made of steel.
I have owned many pairs of NB's over the past few years and I have liked most and loved a couple, but these shoes were just not right for me at all. I'll be avoiding anything with the "rollbar" in the future.

I wore my NB Men's 6.5 4E M587 running shoes for something over a year. I have worn NB running shoes since January, 1969 when they used Ripple soles which lasted only a few months in my then mile a day routine. These shoes are not up to NB standards though I was glad to get them due to my rare size requirements. They were hard, inflexible, and broke down in a novel way for me. I finally figured out that the reason my orthotic was pressing on my arch was because the foot bed had caved in under my heel into what appeared to be a hollow space. I ordered a second pair but will return them since I have found others. I still like New Balance and Zappos but hope I don't have to use this M587 again.
