These boots are really stylish, and true to size for me. I can tell they will take a little while to wear in, they are super sturdy. I love them. They will last years, and are very cool looking. They toughen up my usually girly look.

These are the second pair of Frye boots I've purchased from Zappos. To me, Frye boots run about 1/2 size larger than I normally wear. In most boots I wear a size 8, but in Frye I purchased 7.5. What I really like about these boots is the quality! Absolutely one of the best made, quality boots. I'm certain these boots will last my lifetime & I plan to live another 50 years. It's wonderful to know that some companies still care about the quality of their products and thank you Zappos! Happy New Year & God Bless!

I love these boots! I have wanted them for a long time! I finally broke down & bought a pair. I was not disappointed. They are quality boots, comfy since day one. The only thing I noticed was the backs took a few days of wear to break in. Love the arch support, the soles are great & they don't slip. They look great with bootcut, skinny jeans & tights. I couldn't be happier. I expect to be wearing these boots for years to come. I wrote this because other reviews encouraged me to purchase these. Go for it !

Nice looking boots, couldn't get them on. I love the look of these boots, but it just took way to long to get them on. I realize that leather is tough, but for the amount of money paid for the boots I should be able to get them on without a huge fight. I couldn't help but see myself at a friend's house fighting in embarrassment trying to get my expensive boots on. I don't have super wide or extra large feet, but I just tried and tried and couldn't get 'em on. I had to return them much to my dismay. I did on the other hand order the Ugg Endell's which arrived the very next day (thanks Zappos!) and go on easy and fit like a dream!

Not the same boot? I had another pair of these boots that I have loved for 6 years. I've worn them into the ground--gotten them re-soled twice and reheeled 5 or 6 times. I ordered these in March and they do not seem to be the same boot at all. I don't know if Frye is having their boots made elsewhere, changed the design, or if I somehow got a pair of fakes. But I'm really disappointed. The sole has a lot more flex than previously, which is accentuated by the way the heel connects--making these boots ultimately quite painful to walk in for long distances. They were so painful, in fact, that I had to buy a pair of sneakers one day just so I could make it home. (I could easily walk 10 miles a day in my previous boots.) Also, these boots are not tight across the top of the arch--as the engineers famously are--and so they quickly became very sloppy to walk in. There is also something weird about the way the strip of leather at the back of the heel was sewn--it's not symmetrical. I have not worn them since March and I look sadly at them every day, thinking about what a waste of money they were and wishing I could return them or, better yet, time travel back to 2011 to buy a second pair of good Frye's.

I find that all Frye shoes with the exception of their sandal wedges are true to size. This is my 4th pair of Frye boots...3rd in the engineer style and I love them. I love the clunky look of short boot style...I can wear dresses, leggings, and skinnies with these...love them.

I normally wear a size 10-10 1/2 size shoe, but I had to go up to size 11 in these. It's not fortunate to wear a size 10 1/2 because most shoe companies don't make 10 1/2, but the 10s were scrunching up my toes. Luckily the 11s are fine. I will be able to wear thicker socks with them. This is my first pair of Frye boots so now I know what size I wear in Frye. I have wider, flat feet, larger calves and a bunion, woo hoo! All these issues and that's why I like these boots. The shorter length works for me since I am 5'3. A taller boot would make me look like a kid playing dress-up. These don't have a pointy toe but rather a rounded one so you have plenty of room there. I don't know why so many reviewers said they had a hard time getting these boots on. ?? I just slid my feet right in to the 10 and the 11. So happy I got one of the last pairs in my size, on sale. Now I want the black too. It kind of hurt my ego to have to order a size 11 but I'm glad I did. It doesn't make sense to pay $200 for boots that end up sitting in the closet and never get worn because they're uncomfortably small.

I love the Frye Engineer boot! I've had a pair of the Gaucho ones for 6 years and they are still going strong. I wanted a pair of black ones and they are just as beautiful. The only reason I returned these was because I actually wanted the 12R. You can do anything in these boots; I've worn them to weddings and to go hiking. They stand the test of time and anything else you throw at them. As the owner of 8 pairs of Frye boots, aside from the mass market ones (Melissa Button, etc.) you won't find a better made boot. I expect to have mine for many many years and they never go out of style!

I did mark this as wider than marked, but this works to my advantage, as any boot that has a tapered toe is too narrow and painful for my very wide feet. I usually wear a 7.5 in flip flops and heels, while wearing an 8 for sneakers. I sized down and ordered a 7.5 and was very glad I did. This fits perfectly for my wide feet, which is difficult to find for this kind of heavy duty leather boot. There was zero irritation width-wise to my surprise. I marked this boot a 3/5 for comfort because it is actually the edge of the calf opening that rubs horribly on the back of my leg. I'm sure this will break in and soften up but as for now, it's pretty painful and I can't wear these boots for a long period of time.

Ok let me first say that I've had a pair of these beauties in black for 9 years now. They have taken me all over NYC when I went to school there and have been the most comfortable shoe ever for all day wear. I have been wanting a brown pair for a while now and saw that zappos had them on sale for what I paid 9 years ago & jumped at the opportunity. They arrived yesterday and I couldn't be happier! The take a ways from new to old... the soles on these boots are nearly indestructible... 9 years with heavy wear & they still have a ton of life. The uppers... these are a FULL GRAIN LEATHER that means they are stiff, resistant to water and such, but over time, break in like butter. Plus since it is a full grain I condition mine once or twice a year depending on the seasons and that's what allows it to last for so many years. I love Frye and feel you can never really go wrong with a boot purchase from them.

I've finally found a Frye boot that fits! I've tried more 10 different Frye boots: Veronica boots (Slouch, Short, Criss Cross (tall and short)), Harness, Cavalry, Campus, Jenna. I really wanted a pair of Frye boots, and I am willing to break in a good looking boot. I draw the line at bleeding or limping. The Engineer 8R is the first Frye boot that fits my foot true to size -- it cups my heel lightly, I can wiggle my toes, and I can actually walk to and from the parking garage without pain. With thick socks, this boot is a little snug, but I have eliminated virtually all heel slippage (and why are Frye boots so wide in the heels). These are keepers.

These are my third pair of Frye boots, and I'm so glad I invested in them! The leather has already started loosening up on the second wear and they were comfortable right out of the box. I haven't had any issues with the black dye staining my socks/pants like others have mentioned, but I've been careful to wear dark colors. I wear a 10.5 so I always end up erring on the safe side and ordering an 11 - I enjoy heel slip in my Frye boots and these are perfect, with room left to spare for this socks for this winter. Also, the style is exactly what I was looking for, classic, edgy and stylish - I wear them with a blazer and skinny jeans at the office!

I've been coveting Frye boots for a while and these babies are my first pair. I was really unsure about what size to go with. Obviously it's different for everyone, but ordering true-to-size worked best for me with this style. I normally wear a size 8.5, sometimes a 9. I had originally bought Frye engineer boots from eBay in size 9 - based on reviews I had read I figured I had a good shot at them fitting and they were $70 less than normal. Luckily they were returnable. The 9 fit very comfortable when I put an insole in but made my feet look big and felt awkward. I returned them and bough an 8.5 from Zappos. Out of the box they looked tiny and I thought I had made a mistake, but I put them on and they are perfect! I'll even have room for thicker socks when it gets colder. They look and feel really high quality and will be a perfect every day sweater and jeans boot! Love them.

Love these - perfect. Effortless style, classic. I am petite (5'4") with short legs and tried these and also the 12R. The 12R hit right at the widest part of my calf and looked awkward, but the 8R fit perfectly! I have worn these so many times always - with jeans, dresses, shorts...and have received tons of compliments!

At last: a black mid height boot that looks great and fits well! I have looked for this boot for two years, starting in early autumn 2013. I tried on so many boots (maybe 20 pairs from two vendors!)and sent them back. (Thank you, Zappos, for your help with this long hunt.) This is the one for me. The toe box is wide enough and yet the heel fit is not sloppy. I wear a size 7 and I have a size 7. My toe box is med-to-wide. This is a medium. The heel fits well enough that a winter sock keeps my foot snugly in place. The leather is a beautiful thick high quality material with an attractive matte finish. I wanted a tread that will help me stay upright on icy surfaces; Frye Engineer 8 R fits all my needs. I tried on many other boots and more expensive brands...but this is the one for me. I love this boot!

This is my first pair of Fryes. I am a 7 1/2, but ordered up a half size, and they are perfect with socks or without. I did not have trouble getting them on and wore them all day at work today with no problem. This is the most comfortable shoe out of the box I have ever worn. I'm 5'4" and agree with others that the shorter length of this boot is flattering. Love my new boots!

I typically wear a 10 in most shoes, but I usually get an 11 in boots, so I can wear socks comfortably. The 10 wouldn't even begin to go on my foot, because of my thick instep. The 11 was a bit of a challenge at first, but now goes on with little effort. The 11's fit perfectly. I have an obsession with shoes and boots, and these are without a doubt my new favorites. I got the black, and I plan to also purchase the short harness boots in brown. These boots are very chunky, a little heavy, and definitely made to last. I wouldn't recommend these for someone looking for a lightweight boot. Bonus that these are made in the USA. I've worn them with black leggings, and plan to wear them with skinny jeans, dresses and shorts, when the weather permits. For now, these make simple sweaters and jeans look amazing. I also own the Frye Carson short boots in light brown, and the Cavalry boots in brown, but the black Engineer is perfect for my everyday relaxed style. Zappos customer service rocked as usual! If you've always had your eye on these boots like I did, go for it! You will be so glad you did!

Love these boots. Great for women with muscular calves since the leg opening is large - makes your calves look smaller. Ordered my normal 8.5 and fit perfectly. If you want to wear heavy socks, I'd order 1/2 size up. They were really hard to get on at first so I took them to the shoe guy and had them stretched so they are easier to get on. Looks great with jeggings, skinny jeans, tights, skirts giving outfits that hard/soft edge. Worth the money and I'm a Frye addict. Ordered both the sand and black and decided to keep both.

I got them in black and I am in love with this pair of boots! They look cute with leggings, jeans, skirts, dresses, and they are amazingly comfortable. I have been wearing them 5 days a week since I got them. The only downside is that they make dark marks on my light color socks. But I still love them a lot! By the way, I suggest to get half a size bigger if you have wide feet or you want to wear warm socks.

I've been looking for a pair of sturdy classic boots for a while but could never find anything I liked because though I found many cute styles they also came with not so cute price tags. After lusting over these boots for over a year now I finally took the plunge and bought them for myself as a birthday present. I'm usually a size 5.5 in shoes but had to go up to a size 6 and the fit is perfect! Initially I was concerned that they would overwhelm my petite frame but the short shaft of the boot is perfect for me. They are very utilitarian and chunky looking which I find charming but be warned if you're looking for something more feminine. I've been breaking them in by wearing 2 pair of thick socks and there's still enough room in the front for me to wiggle my toes. The black leather is very stiff and has a matte quality so they sort of resemble rain boots though I'm sure once they get good and distressed the look will go away. My only complaints are that the dye from the black leather rubs off on socks and jeans so don't wear any light colored hosiery or pants with these. Also, the ankle strap is only for aesthetic purposes and doesn't tighten. If you're contemplating buying these stop thinking and just do it! I can definitely see myself wearing these for decades and can count on them to be stylish for that long as well!

I needed a nice black boot that looked a little masculine, I could wear out and be comfortable. I always see women with these boots on so I had to have them. I originally bought the Engineer 12R, they were beautiful but because I have athletic legs (bigger calves) it gave them no shape. I exchanged them for the Engineer 8W and I loved this size. I originally wear a size 9 but ordered a size 9.5. It was a good choice. The first week I hated them, they really hurt my feet. A piece of leather was rubbing the back of my heel and got a blister. Someone told me to wear wet socks but I was concerned to boots would smell. I couldn't walk 3 steps without them hurting so I gave in. I wet a pair of wool socks and slept in the boots. I walked around my apartment for about a week and the boots finally started to loosen up. I've had them for about a month and I love them. They are exactly what I've wanted and more. I get compliments on them left and right. These boots are a great investment. Some people will have to dedicate some time to breaking them in. Once you do, they will become your favorite item. The craftsmanship is beyond! They're a little pricey but worth the price.

Just took these out of the box so I can't speak for longevity, comfort, or durability, but I can speak to sizing. I have wide feet, very wide calves, and high arches. On top of that, I am recovering from a broken leg and still have swelling around my left ankle. Still, I bought the 8R W's in my regular size 8.5, and they fit comfortably. I also bought the 12R's in a 9, and they slid on with no problem. Oh rapturous day, boots that fit!!
