Using this shoe to train for Portuguese Camino to Santiago. Recommend to me by many people. Currently training 4 or more miles daily (I'm over70). My feet never felt better.

I had a pair of the escalante 1.5s and they were the BEST shoes I've ever worn. I still have them and prefer to wear them over the escalante 4s, even though they have seen better days. The changes to this shoe are just not my favorite. The shoe doesn't seem as durable, as comfortable, and I am constantly having to tie my shoe because the laces are so short. I love the style of the 4s, I just wish they weren't so different from the previous model. I purchased 2 pair in different colors and would rate them both the same. I think I'll have to try another shoe next time but I want to love these so bad.

Quality keeps dropping with each shoe. The very thin, flimsy tongue is useless & bunches on top of my foot. I've had foot pain in my arches and heels, which has never happened before with any altra.

I know Altras are designed to be running shoes, but I am in my 80's and find the stability they give me helps me not to fall. Altras are all I wear anymore and I haven't fallen since I began wearing them. Thank you!

I've worn previous versions of this shoe. I thought version 1.5 were the best. Version 2.5 were pretty good as well. Even the Racers feel great. I would run half marathons in those and my feet would feel great, but for some reason version 4 gives me plantar fasciitis, even after only running 1 or 2 miles. I'm hoping a new version comes out soon and that it will be closer to the 1.5s - I'm going to need new running shoes soon, but I can't buy the 4s again.

I agree with Jess that the Escalante 1.5 version were the best and most comfortable. The subsequent versions don't compare in wearability and durability. Go back to that version please.

Had to return shoes due to outer sole deteriorating after 20 days. Been running in shoes for 10 years and quality gets worse each year. On to find a new brand.

Strong new smell odor coming from all areas of the shoe is not airing out yet - delivered a few days ago. The strong odor in my apartment is making my chemical sensitivity problem worse.. I went to a shoe store and compared two other brands and their new smell was less strong. I have migraines which amplifies the light, sound and smell senses - chemical odors are triggers for me. On the right inside wall of both shoes where the two different fabric areas are joined there is sticky glue residue. I so much wanted the foot shaped toe box, but I am not able to keep them in my home.

Great walking and running shoes! Like walking on a cloud!

It feels too narrow but I think it's mostly because the laces are too short and I have to tighten them more than I'd like to get a secure tie on the shoe. Otherwise great.

I absolutely LOVED the Escalante 1.5 - so much so that I purchased 4 more pairs (of the 1.5 version) after my initial purchase back in 2019. I'm 47 and have terrible feet (collapsible arch, hammer toes, callouses, blisters, etc.) and have struggled pretty much all of my life trying to find comfortable shoes. The Escalante 1.5 was the first shoe I was able to wear comfortably to hike, run, and walk long distances with minimal issues (which is why I stocked up and bought 4 more pairs!). Unfortunately, the Escalante 4 doesn't come close to the 1.5 version in terms of comfort or durability. I've purchased 2 pairs of the Escalante 4 now - I'm not sure what specific changes Altra has made in recent years, but they have not been for the better. Cushioning is so much worse and my first pair of the Escalante 4 ended up with holes in the toes in less than 6 months (while I still have 1.5's with no holes after years of wear?!?). It doesn't make sense to me why they've made these changes when the 1.5 version was such an excellent shoe. I'm to the point now where after being a loyal customer for over 5 years, I'm now searching again for other better options. Altra, if you're reading this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider returning to whatever you did when making the Escalante 1.5! It was truly magical for my terrible feet, and I'm so sad I'm back to the drawing board in terms of searching for a comfortable shoe.

On my 2nd pair of the 4's. Trained for a marathon in these shoes and near the end of my training cycle I started to get blisters after only 300-ish miles on the shoes. I loved them so much I got a new pair for the marathon I was training for and hoped for the best. Was able to run about 8 miles before my race in my new 4's and had a backup pair of lone peaks on hand for the race just in case. Ended up crushing my marathon without a single blister or lost toenail!! I love these shoes so much, they really work for me. More colors, please!

I wanted to love these shoes so bad! They look great and were the most comfortable running shoes I have worn. But after just 3 weeks (!!!) of owning these, and running only about 50km (!!!) both shoes have holes torn in the inner lining, causing blisters and bleeding. I have owned running shoes from other brands that have lasted years before wearing out like this. Really shocked at how quickly these have fallen apart, just a complete waste of money. They could have been great, shame about the quality!

These shoes are super light and comfy. Make me feel super-fast, which I am not, but perception is everything ;). I will buy these over and over.

The Escalante is the best running shoe that I've used over the years, and I will be sticking with these. My feet are significantly stronger since using these regularly, and I appreciate how I can feel my foot responding to the ground strike and isn't thrown off by all the extra cushion. My ankle stability has also improved, as has my gait. My only wish, beg, plead is that more colors become available. Sometimes the men's selection is better than the women's selection! Solid shoe, just sub-par style.

Love the look and feel but the sole wore out so quickly I'm hesitant to buy again. I walked a few times a week on pavement for 4 months and the sole is already bare. I understand wear and tear is normal but these shoes are hardly worn and already need to be replaced. Dissapointed. My husbands torins did the same thing.

These are fantastic shoes! They look small and tidy on my feet. Advertised as lower-cushioned, I find them to be moderately cushioned. This seems magical, because just looking at them they are very low-profile. However, they are just as cushy as my stacked Ho**s that add an extra inch or two to my height but look chunky. I wear Escalante for running errands. I love them.

I have a wide food so they work the best for me.

I love these so much I bought a second pair. My one issue is that the black looks closer to dark navy blue and they “clash” with true black pants.

This is a poorly made shoe with thin material. The tongue is so thin it hurts my foot every I wear it. I have tried but who wants sore feet.

These shoes fit and feel great, but after less than a month the tread is completely worn smooth in some places. I only do about 10-15 miles in these shoes a week. I expected much better longevity.
