I previously had the Escalante 2.5 shoes from Altra which I loved because of the wide toe box. Other shoes for running just don’t work. While these were comfortable and looked nice, they were more narrow where I needed them to be.

The old ones were SO good, I do NOT like the updated version! They are more narrow through the midfoot which is super weird with the wide toe box. I order mens for the width but these are narrow. The lace system is so ridiculous, they don't stay tight or tied. Why did you change a good thing?

First Altras and they feel perfect. I wanted to get into running but needed more cushion than my Vivos. These feel just like vivos, wide, flexible, no drop, just with cushion. BUT I've only had them for a couple months and the soles under the outer toes have already worn/lost tread. I've probably only run less than 10 miles (taking easy on Achilles) and with walking I'm under 30-40 total miles. The tops still look brand new but the soles don't seem like they'll last very long. Unsure if I'd buy another pair if this is how fast they wear down. Unfortunate because these are by far the more comfortable/favorite shoes I've ever worn.

I just got my first pair of Altras recently and the Lone Peak 9 in 14 feels like the first shoe I've ever found that actually fits my foot. I immediately ordered a couple more pairs, including a pair of the Escalante 4 also in a 14. In the Lone Peak 9, my toes have room to spread out and there's also a little room in the end so they're not bunched up anywhere. In the same size on the Escalante, my toes are jammed right to the end of the shoe. I haven't worn them out running yet, but not sure they'll work well for me unless I can find some hidden space inside of them. I'd order a half size larger but up at the top end my only option is to go a full size up and I don't know if that would work for me either.

This shoe could be so amazing if you just changed a couple things! Wide toe box...zero drop...so comfortable. I love it! If you want a minimal shoe but not too minimal this is it. BUT .... Why is the tread so cheap it wears down after a few months of just walking? Why is the "black" this weird gray color? Would love if you just improved these two things.

I had a comment about these being dark blue in color and I forgot about that comment and ended up purchasing these. The fit is awesome but the color is not black. I wish I had more characters to complai

Good, comfortable shoe, but poorly made and falls apart rather quickly. Tongue stiching began to unravel after 2 weeks. With that being said I have bought 2 pairs because of the comfortable fit!

I've each had another pair of your shoes prior to these and they fit perfectly. We go the same sizes this time but they are bigger. The lack of consistency has created a less than optimal experience.

This is my third pair of Altras and these fit larger than the others (Superior 5 and Lone Peak all weather). I do like how they look though, I went with the all-grey.

Shoes are very comfortable, although I had to take the insoles out in order for them to fit properly. These are far too tight in the mid shoe area. THESE SHOES ARE NOT BLACK, NOT EVEN CLOSE! The 'black' model is absolutely dark navy blue.

I've had 2 pairs of Escalante racers and these are my first Escalante 4s. I am disappointed at how quickly I've lost treat in the toes specifically. 2 shakeout runs, 1 half marathon, tread is gone

The Good: Very comfortable out of the box. Cushioning feels great - not too soft, not too hard, the toe box feels nice and wide, the lack of a padded tongue isn't a problem for me, I'd like the laces to be a bit longer but overall first impressions are excellent. The Less Good: Heel fit. I have rather pointy and narrow heels, and it became pretty clear after a few hours of use that these shoes are designed for people with much more rounded heels. If you have heels like me, you might want to try a different model. The Bad: Durability. I've put maybe 30 miles of on these shoes, sidewalk/pavement walking only, and only in good weather. I'm 150 lbs and I'm already noticing wear on the soles. But even worse, I've already completely worn through the fabric and padding on the inside of the heels. I might be able to get a few more hours of use out of these shoes for walking, but that's about it. I'm willing to own that my heel shape isn't an ideal match for these shoes, and I get that sneakers are basically a disposable item these days, fine. But I've had many shoes that weren't a perfect fit that cost less and lasted much much longer than these. It's a shame really, there's alot I honestly like about these shoes, but this is by far the fastest I've ever worn out a pair of shoes to the point of near-unusability, maybe 15-20 hours.

comfy, but too wide. cushioning is too thin. Torin is too plush/maximalist. Rivera was the perfect balance of cushion and ground-feel. Please bring back the Rivera! narrower fit with 25-27mm stack.

The sizing on this one is off. Ordered my usual Altra size, Mens 13, and it is about 1/2 size too wide and too long, which feels odd. Other than that, it is nothing special, but it will be a good gym shoe with a low cushion for cardio class and weight workouts. I use other shoes with a thicker cushion for walking. It's strange they keep their sizing consistent within the same shoe company.

This model is way too small. Out of the box, they felt like they fit, but when running, I realized they were too small. My third and fourth toes constantly rub and give me hot spots. My other Altras are the same size and are perfect. Maybe it is a QC issue?

Good shoe however, it does not last. I love the feel and the large toe box however after less than two months the heel was worn through, and the shoe lost its support. For the cost not worth it!

When I first got these shoes, they were hard to run in. After breaking them in some. They are a little better. Not enough cushion to absorb shock from running. I will use them more for walking than running.

I was looking a for a good all-around training shoe: I tried the Solstice X2's first, but the heel cup seemed too shallow, making them look like a mix of clown/bowling shoes on me, and they were not very comfortable. The Escalante fits perfectly, looks great, and although it doesn't have as flat of a sole for leg days, it provides plenty of stability for plenty of bodyweight leg exercises. They also work great for casual short-distance runs and cardio. HOWEVER... Altra sent me a pair of shoes that had laces that both too short and different lengths. When I reached out to them, I was told replacement laces were not available and I should try some third party websites. I'm bewildered how a shoe company doesn't have any laces available, and more importantly, how I'm expected to just buying my own laces to fix their problem. The only alternative option would be to send the shoes in, wait for a refund, and buy a new pair hoping for better luck.

The shoe fits well and is comfortable. It is good for walking, not so much for running. Not enough padding for the feet when jogging. Feet are tired after 3 miles. The Rivera is a pair that has the right padding for jogging and walking.

Comfortable and I get compliments on them often, but this (my 5th or 6th pair) has not he'd up very well at all. I' haven't had them more than 3 weeks and the stitching that attaches the tongue has come apart!

Used to love the Escalante when it first was introduced. Now not so much. The changes aren't good for my feet. Also the color is advertised as black and these shoes definitely aren't black anymore!

It pains me to write this, I tried the Escalante years ago and they were the best shoes I've ever run in. They helped with knee pain and lessened my soreness overall after running. I never thought I'd run in anything else. Then I bought this most recent pair and almost immediately the material inside the heel started wearing away. The soles wore down after only a couple of uses. I tried Hoka and Brooks to see if maybe the issue was me, but nope, Altra's quality has really diminished. The other shoes have held up great under the same use. I would tell anyone to STAY AWAY from this brand, even if the fit isn't as good with another brand I'd go with them, it's not worth the cost of these shoes breaking down so quickly.

I got this shoe in December to replace a pair of Escalante (no number, probably about 2 years old) that were on their way out. The Escalante 4 has been a disappointment comparatively. This shoe is narrower from about the midway point through to the heel, resulting in less lateral stability and discomfort in the arch. This was not immediately noticeable wearing them around the house when first trying them out, but since getting them out into the world it's been quite evident. I was hoping they'd break in and conform better to my feet, but it's now March and that hasn't happened. I use the shoes mostly for everyday casual wear and light athletic activities. These shoes are just uncomfortable and do not instill confidence. I would not recommend these shoes for serious running. I've also come to notice a slight rubbing of the side of my right pinky toe, which while not as bothersome as would be with a standard shaped toe shoe, is not really acceptable in my opinion for a wide toe box shoe. This slight rubbing is not painful but I do notice it. Another pretty annoying issue is that the tongues do no stay in place---bad design! Overall rather disappointed in the devolution of this shoe. Do better Altra!

The shoe is mostly comfortable and true to size, but, plan on spending an extra $10 on different shoelaces that will remain tied, because Altra in their infinite stupidity, changed their poly shoelaces to ones that are much thicker with a different texture. Result? They are extremely difficult to tie, and, they will not stay tied unless a second knot is tied on top of the initial knot (which makes untying more difficult), and even then they sponge apart and become untied. Really bad stupid mistake Altra! I contacted customer service and asked for a replacement set of shoelaces, they refused, and I'm on the border on returning them within the 30-day window.

Im disapointed in the escalante 4 because of the bulge in the arch of the foot. After 5km of running I get blisters in the foot arches. My last 8km run made me bleed.
