Honestly altra should just remake, exactly, the original Escalante. It was great for road/track ultras. Everything after the first version has had a sole that is too stiff. Quit trying to pander to marathoners.

Best Escalante shoe I've owned thus far! I've had the 2, 2.5 & 3. The 2 & 2.5 were great shoes but were a little too plush for my liking & the toe box was very wide (Great shoes is you have super wide feet). The 3's were too narrow (Great shoe if you have narrow feet). These 4's are a very good sweet spot between the 2.5 & 3. It's gives you a lot of room in the mid foot & toe box but not too much like the 2.5's. Not narrow like the 3's. These are just right! As far as the experience running in this shoe it feels a lot like the 3. More responsive than the 2.5 & SLIGHTLY more firm. They are also more breathable than the 3, comparable to the 2.5's in terms of breathability. Secure & comfortable lock down in the heel/ankle & mid foot. These feel amazing on feet. I ended up buying 2 more pairs of this shoe! Great job Altra for making those well needed adjustments!
I posted a picture of the 2.5's & 4's side by side to show the width difference in the shoe. Unless you have extremely wide feet these 4's will feel amazing for you. I'm usually a 2E/4E in running shoes & these 4's were amazing for me, the 2.5's were a bit too wide in the toe box for me. The 4's have a bit more structure to them than the 2.5's which was a plus for me!
Side Note: I've tried on the Escalante Racer 2 those felt pretty good but was too firm for my liking.

Most favorite Escalante yet. 200 miles in and still running great. I'll be buying more. Don't change it!!!

Ultimate flexibility, perfect toe box for independent forefoot mechanics, neutral, a little cushion with maintaining minimalism. Older Lone Peaks, older Escalantes, and Alpine LPs are the only Altras that have worked well for me. The Escalante 4 has been the best followed by Alpine LPs a close second. Never thought the Alpine LP could be beat. Obviously, different uses, but for the purpose of walking........regardless of terrain, the Escalante 4s are the best for me. I'm also hyper-sensitive. 99.9% of shoes will immediately create biomechanical dysfunction somewhere between the foot all the up to the pelvis and in between the pelvis/lower extremity joints. I can where name a shoe including most Altras and they will usually shutdown neuromuscular function in the foot/ankle/knew/hip/trunk/spine. Not the Escalante 4. If you have had good experiences with other Escalantes and the Apline LP, your body will most likely be compatible with these.

I wasn't thrilled with any of the women's models/colors in wide width, so I decided to purchase the Men's Escalante 4 (mens regular is equivalent to womens wide width) instead.
I wear a 10-10.5 wide in womens and went with the mens size 9 in black/white - perfect fit. Of course I wish the color was a bit more feminine, but at least there was a neutral option!
I'm new to the wide toe box, zero drop but I'm absolutely in love with this shoe & hope I never have to go back to traditional tennis shoes. Zero-drop requires some adjustment time - my calves have been BURNING on walks, so I've had to slow it down.
FYI I tried Flux footwear first, but they are ridiculously narrow, so I had to return (also beware their return policy). I wear my new altras for walking and strength training primarily, and I plan to wear them when I visit London for 10 days in October.
So happy with my purchase overall. One critique is I'd like to see more wide-width options for women.

Meh. Very meh. I had hopes -dashed. Returned immediately. These were nowhere near wide enough for me, although listed as wide. The toe box is nice and roomy, but the 'body' of the shoe was uncomfortably snug, even unlaced widely. I was not overly impressed with the build quality; they smelled much like the inexpensive but much-better-fitting shoes from the Zappos parent company. I was disappointed. Also, not enough vertical height - I could not use the insoles at all. (Very very common for me - removing insoles gives almost 1/4" more vertical space inside)

These I was hopeful, but wound up diappointed. I'm a W12 6E/ M10.5-11 3-4E. The Escalante was a bit too short (possibly an 11 would've been better) but much too snug for me in the body of the shoe. I had to remove the insoles to even be able to put it on. They have a 'cheap' smell, and don't look much different from my amazon 'Whitin' brand basic lace-ups which feel much more roomy inside - but much less padding in the heel. Also, the escalante heel was too high for me and was putting pressure on my achille's tendon. I only had them on sitting on the couch for 30 min before I'd had enough and my feet were crying out for release. Not for me.
I'd also recommend:
whitin, some Drew, some New balance

I have been wearing the Escalante since the 1.0 for running/triathlons/anything and have loved them so much, until this version. I've never thought twice about just getting on here and ordering the most recent version of the Escalante for my needs.
This version wears out VERY early and I don't even run anymore. I legit have walked 100-200 miles in these and the tread is wearing down and heel backs are opening the material. I'm 195lbs, so not really stomping on these. This is my second pair of the Green color (which I like a lot!) and thought maybe first pair wearing down that quickly was a fluke.
Again, I haven't bought another shoe other than Escalante 1.0 began in 2017. Not sure if other running companies are doing this to help soles wear down quicker, hence making customers buy buy buy. Unless they change the tread back, will be searching for another brand/shoe, it's just too expensive to wear down that quick. Thanks

Clunky. Lack style. Don't like the soles. Preferred the 2.5. Seems like the company has lost it's way.

The sewing (bump) on top of the foot started to drive me crazyyyy! Specially the where the bone of the big toe is. I even took the lacet off.
Its unfortunate because the rest is great. I wonder if am the only one.

I am on my at least my fifth pair, purchased from my local running store. This pair became so rank I cannot even keep them indoors. I contacted customer support to purchase or otherwise obtain replacement insoles. You would think they would bend over backwards, especially given that I was willing to pay. Nope. What a huge disappointment. How hard can this be.

Was recommended Alta by a colleague and was looking for a wider toe box with zero drop. At first I loved them but soon they started to wear out. I used them for daily wear and walks. After just 3 months I saw a hole in the left shoe above my big toe. When I contacted customer service, they basically said this was "normal" wear and tear. Shoes that cost this much should last much longer than that just wearing them casually. Bad quality, worse customer service!

I wear a women's 10 or men's 8.5, but I have a very high arch, so I got the Altra Escalante in a men's 9, hoping they'd be big enough, wide enough to fit in. They're perfect.

Light enough to race with. Breathable. Great for road and treadmill training. The gray is nearly white - which I like.

This is the best running shoe ive ever put on my feet hands down.
Its so comfortable and honestly very supportive.
the cushion starts a bit stiff but over some time it gets more plush, the weight of this shoe is so low u dont even feel like ur wearing anything.
Now the only bad thing about this shoe is the probably the durabillity, the fabric rips and creats holes it the heel counter and the shoe itself

Just surpassed 1,000 miles in these. Got these after putting in similar miles on my escalante 3's and needed a fresh pair. Great shoe. I always size up 1 size on Altras to give my foot extra room.

I have been running in my Altra's 2 days a week as I transition to minimal (barefoot) shoes. Love them on the longer runs and as a break from my thinner shoes. Super light and nicely padded with no noticeable drop. Not much ground feel with the liners in but they are springy (fast). Would be a great every day shoe to try transitioning to a zero drop shoe.

Bought this for a workout shoe and love it so far. I've used for strength workouts, cardio and some pickleball and seems to work for all of it.

These shoes are so comfy I love them. The backs wore through after less than 6 months use, so quality could be a bit better. But I also leave them tied and slip my feet in, so that might be on me.

Fits well with plenty of space but foot not slipping/sliding within the shoe. Better road feel than the last version, which I found less impressive than prior versions. This version made me fall in love with Escalante again.
