These were not as wide as the usual Altras, so I’m having to return them.

Went and ordered their black/black for work (required color) after having the SW version that I absolutely love. Opened the box and saw they were dark navy with the sole matching shade. Checked the label on the box and sure enough, it was black/black. So, a great shoe but whoever is picking the fabric color must be blind

I love these shoes! They are close to how the 2 felt but not quite there. The only drawback to these shoes is the bottoms wear out really fast. I try other shoes snd keep coming back to these.

Comfy toe box but not enough heel support

Nice clean shoe with a good toe box. Make sure to order the right size, as I could not find a way to exchange for a 1/2 size larger. I had to do a return then repurchase. But definitely a comfortable shoe.

I would say this is a shoe for walking / casual . Definitely not for a long distance runner. Good for a walk at the park or trail.

Great, comfortable shoes both for running and everyday use. However, colors are not quite right. As other reviews mention, the Black (my first pair, which I love) is not quite black. I ordered the White/Gray colorway directly from Altra, and the colors were off. The tongue is a much lighter gray than it appears online, white uppers have the slightest mint green tinge, and the green on the outsole is much duller in person. I returned the White/Gray and ordered another pair from another retailer to check if it was a one-off manufacturing issue, but the second White/Gray pair had the same issues.

Was purchased due to arches starting to flatten out and a very tight calf / Achilles, stretching and wearing these have greatly improved what I thought was a plantar fasciitis..

The only reason these are not a five stars is because I miss the Escalante three. In the world of overly stacked sneakers that look like you're running on mattresses, I love the simplicity and cushioning of this shoe. It would be nice to see more color choices as well. The three had just a little more cushioning and I got more life out of that shoe. Please bring it back!

I train for my Triathlons in this shoe and overall I'm happy, my only complaint was the craftsmanship. Within the first couple times I wore it the tongue separated from the shoe on one side.

I've had the OG Escalante's, the 2.5s, the 3s, and now have ~550 miles on the 4s (in highlighter yellow). The 4s are probably my favorite pair to date - light weight, comfortable, and relatively responsive. My biggest complaint as I look for a new pair is the available color ways. Only one option that isn't some sad shade of beige or gray...seriously?!? Running shoes should be loud, fun colors. Maybe one or two color ways for people who daily these shoes to work, but other than that make something bold!

These are my fourth pair of Escalantes. I've had the originals, the 2.5s, the 3's and now the 4's. Currently I have about 550 miles on my pair of 4's and this version is by far my favorite since the OG version. Comfortable, light, and overall pretty durable. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new pair, but sheesh are the current colors BORING. What gives? Running shoes should be loud and garish...not everyone wants a bland color. I get it for people that daily these as work shoes etc, but at the very least offer a few color ways that aren't some variation of sad gray or beige...4/5, would be 5/5 shoes if there were better color options.

Correction to my earlier comment: Escalante 4 tongues tendency to slide outside is not a dealbreakerstill a wearable shoe. I'm very glad Altra offers shoes with the "Original Footshape." Extra width crucial for my feet, which have bunionettes. I use the shoes for walking and light strength training.

These are very comfortable and just what I need. After walking in them for months, however, the cushioning seems to have worn down so that they are less so, and the outer sole is considerably more worn than I would expect. This isn't my first pair of Altras to have this problem! I don't know what it is about them, but they all seem to wear too quickly. Altra, PLEASE invest in better material for the soles of your shoes. Perhaps they should all be Vibram.

Great zero-drop shoe. Here are things to look out for:
1. Yes, they wear out quicker than other brands.
2. Uh, yeah... the black version isn't black. It's objectively navy (I'm a film colorist).

Love the feel of this one and the racer version. But as a moderate runner (twice a week), these wear out VERY quick! (Less than a year, and the heal is wearing quickly)

Wish the black was actually pitch black and not navy in color. The shoe laces could be 4-6 inches longer. Virtually impossible to double knot. Had to replace the laces.

I bought these for the wide toe box. My toes have room to move. Which is the reason for looking and buying these shoes.
My only complaint is that the shoe laces come untied all the time. I will be looking into a different shoe lace.

I loved the old generation Escalante Racer, which fit my foot perfectly and provided the perfect amount of support I need.
I tried out this Escalante 4, as it seemed similar enough, albeit with an obvious amount of extra support. As I have been using these in the gym, that observation was confirmed a lot of extra support. So, while my feet feel supported in the gym, I don't feel these would be ideal for my foot shape and style in a running capacity. I wonder if there is just too much support for my arched feet.
Comfortable 10/10
Supportive 11/10
Prevents my ankles from rolling 9/10
Color and style (I got the highlighter green) 10/10
I would buy these again for the gym only. For every day walking and for running, I would go back to the Escalante Racer.

This shoe caused me quite a bit of pain in my arch at first until I cut out part of the insole with a razor blade. Since then it has been great

I walk/run 3-5 miles daily. I have worn both the 3's and 4's. The fit is good and the shoes are comfortable. The only complaint is that the soles wear very quickly. Surely there is a tougher material that can be used on the outsole without compromising the flexibility.

This is my fourth pair of Escalante's. I really like the shoes but wish that the outsole lasted longer. I run/walk 3.5-5 miles a day and this pair is worn flat at 275 miles. Surely a tougher outsole is not impossible to produce. I would also like to see an expanded color selection. Greys and blacks are boring. I have the yellow now, but there aren't any other "fun" colors. I would and have recommended these shoes and will continue to do so.

I have purchased 6 pairs of Escalante's and I use them to walk around 2 miles per day. They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned primarily due to the wide toe box. However, after a few months, the fabric on the bottom of the heel tore and holes developed in the heel long before the tread wore out.
