I normally don't write product reviews but I had a great experience with this one. I've had the backpack for about a year and a half now, and regularly use it for carrying books, folders and my laptop around campus and it has held up great. But what really surprised me was this: it fell into a stream I was crossing while hiking and down a 10-ft waterfall, but bobbed right back up to the surface because it was so watertight, and floated near the shore until I could pull it out a minute later. There was maybe half an inch of water in the bottom, and most of my gear was wet, but not soaked, and I got my backpack and gear back. The lining has also held up well in heavy rain, with some stuff inside being damp afterwards but only slightly, and in lighter to moderate rain I don't remember anything getting wet yet. Notably, the laptop compartment will get damp around the edges but this hasn't impacted my laptop in the past. Great purchase, definitely worthwhile. I expect to be able to continue using this for several years.

I'm almost 50, and I've been using LL Bean nap sacks since I was in elementary school. When I was a kid I had a leather bottom nap sack for years that I just loved. After a bunch of years the zipper broke, and I sent it back with a note that begged LL Bean to save my favorite bag and fix it. A few weeks later it was returned, as good as new, with a nice note in return. This bag continues LL Bean's great tradition of great bagsbut this time for my 6th grader. I'll always return to LL Bean for great nap sacks.

I don't feel that the back pack is as roomie as advertised. The waterbottle pockets are great but the main compartment seems small and the other pockets also seem small. I love the color, straps, and overall appearance.

This is a good pack but is a little smaller than expected. Overall it works well and has a nice look.

We purchased this bag in August for our son who was entering middle school. The size has worked out great for him. He carries a binder, his math workbook, some extra supplies and a chromebook. The bag is full and heavy but it all fits. He often uses the stretchy straps to hold his lunch when needed. In October, the chest strap/clasp unraveled and fell off. We brought it back to LLBean and true to their word, it was replaced. This was great. A little frustrating that it broke so quickly but I am glad they helped us out.

This is an update to the review I posted last week. I stated the claw clip fell off, making it hard to secure the pack. I was told to go to a fabric store for a replacement. After my review, several customer service people reached out to assist me. The backpack is being returned for a refund. I'll order a replacement. My 30+ years as a LLBean customer continues, primarily due to their great customer service.

Love the backpack, but purchased for my college student in Feb and in March the seams on straps are ripping already. I would think they would be made more rugged.

I use this for work and just returned from a three week vacation where I carried it daily in Alaska. Good size. Light weight. Secondary pouch is a bit of a mess as the divider doesn't do much and everything in the pouch just sort of hangs out together. I took two stars away because the straps are angled too wide. I am a 5'9" male with a 44" chest and the straps hit me at the very farthest out on my shoulders - this causes them to slide off constantly unless I have the chest strap latched.

Could be slightly bigger, but is durable, colorful, and works for my middle schooler.

I just took this on a week long trip. It holds a lot. The side pouches are nice and deep and the front webbing held my hat and scarf on the airplane. I do wish the front section had a longer zipper so it opened more widely. Access to the inside pockets is a bit restricted. I dont know yet how durable it is.

I was looking for a bag that could be loaded up for trips to the office and for city biking. This backpack is close to what I was looking for, but it has design elements that make it next to impossible for a short lady to use. The shoulder straps are set wide wider than any backpack I've had in my life, so to keep it on, the sternum strap is necessary for all use. Unfortunately, just like a car seatbelt that doesn't adjust, the sternum strap hits in my neck. I realized prior to making the purchase that this bag had slightly different dimensions than my previous bag, but I didn't think it would have such an impact.

I bought my son this backpack since I remembered the high quality llbean made thing when I was a kid. With a year the straps frayed and it looks terrible.

The fabric felt weird and made a loud noise. The top didn't open wide enough for me and it barely held my laptop. This just wasn't the bag. for me.

I purchased this pack for my wife a little over two years ago. She uses it to carry her laptop to work, and maybe a book or two. She was generally happy with it. The pack kept her items safe and dry. But then the seam at the top of the shoulder strap started to tear. It's about halfway gone now, and she wonders when it will break completely. This pack just isn't made up to the same standards as the old backpacks.

Unless you use the chest strap, the shoulder straps fit awkwardly. The backpack is too narrow to fit school binders with a lunchbox (5th grader). Will return and exchange for another Deluxe Backpack. We bought this model for the better color option and a sturdier water bottle holder. Too bad.

Small strap broke and two main straps are tearing after 2 weeks of school! My son is 11, his backpack is not that heavy. This is poor quality and I am very disappointed. I remember when a backpack from this company used to last for years. This is inexcusable craftsmanship. My other son has been using the same (other brand) backpack for 4 years. I want my money back. You are welcome to have the backpack back. Aside from that the interior pockets are poorly designed and the water bottle holder needs to be wider.

I purchased this for my teen granddaughter. The first time she used it , the handle broke on one side. I'll be returning it this weekend. I've purchased so many items for my grandchildren and this is the first time I received a defective product from ll bean. I hope I can receive my 40 bean bucks back that I used as part of the purchase price.

The handle on top broke on my third grader in the 2nd week of school?! There was NO weight in the backpack?! He was SO sad about it because he can no longer hang his new backpack in his locker. I was the one who encouraged him to find one from LL Bean because I thought it would last. The backpack we purchased from another popular brand when he was 2 is still going strong, and has been passed down to his little brother. I guess we will switch back to that brand. So disappointing.

We bought our boys LL Bean backpacks with the expectation that they would be able to withstand the wear and tear of school kids. Took this backpack back to the store, and they said there was nothing they could do as it looked like normal wear and tear.

I bought this same backpack years ago for my older sons and it lasted them through all four years of high school with very heavy daily use. I bought a new one for my younger son last summer before he started high school, and after barely one year of use, the straps are ripping off the body of the backpack. Whatever changes LLBean has made to the materials, manufacture, or design of this backpack have substantially reduced the quality and durability and it is no longer worth purchasing. Check the date on any positive reviews! Backpacks purchased in 2022 or before were great, but you won't be getting the same quality backpack if you order it today.
