Lightweight, Durable. Ok, here's the deal: the color is much lighter in person, nothing some black shoe polish can't fix. It actually comes out much nicer (dark burgundy). This shoe is very light compared to Docs of old. This means no knee pains! I needed this for work. I'm a teacher, so I need a shoe that looks slick, can take the mud on the playground, and won't alert anyone to my approach in the hallways. This shoe does all that. These are Docs, so they'll last forever. The longer you own them, the more comfortable they get. These shoes took about 4 full days of pain (by the tongue of shoe and ankle) before they broke in. Now there's slight pain, but once you suck it up and these break in 100%, it'll be the best shoe in the world.

Docs - This is my 8th pair of Docs. Of the 8, 3 have been wingtips (black, brown & black/white). I have a wide foot (EE+) and a high arch. My measured size is 8.5, but the size 9 (US) Dr. Martens fit well. The toe box is not too far forward. They are casual/dress in style and last forever and a day.

Super cute, even in women's size 11. One very slight issue is that the tongue of the shoe is very stiff, to the point of making the front of my right ankle sore from poking my ankle all day. I think it softens with age/use though.

This is the third pair of this style of shoe I have purchased in the last ten years - first time in brown. I have always had to break in the shoes a fair bit but these had particularly stiff leather. I had to do a rather thorough mink oil treatment to get the leather pliable enough to not create blisters on my slightly larger right foot. Once that was done - these shoes are great! Stylish, good support and good durability.

This is my 4th pair of Dr. Martens shoes and I have to say this brand really lasts. However, for this pair of shoes, while style is still excellent, the quality is really not what it used to be. Outside they look great and well made but inside both shoes had insole lining that only went half way (only the back of the shoe covered). Inside the shoe, where the lining stopped, glue was visible all around the front of the shoes making them look unfinished. In addition, there was a big glob of glue inside one shoe. I am still keeping them but I would expect a lot better quality for the shoes that cost above $100. As for the fit, they run large, feel really roomy and require thicker sock. Would be excellent shoes for someone who needs wider and roomier fit.

They are huge. I wear a size 7½-8 and my feet were swooshing around in them. The size 8 shoes that I ordered felt like a 9. They are very cute, and solid shoes otherwise. Doc Martens are heavy, I suppose that is good for a workout for your legs.

I had to buy these shoes based on style. The fit kind of snug, but I'm sure that will manage itself out. I have a wide foot so I knew that would be an issue anyways.

Style is superb; shoes go well with business attire as well as with jeans, but these are very uncomfortable if you are on your feet for any length of time (little cushion and very stiff).

I've been wearing Doc Martens for the past 15 years almost exclusively, owning about 8 or 9 models among boots and shoes. The model 3989 in black is yet another member of the family of Docs and my third pair of non-England made shoes. My Docs have had an average life span of about 5-7 yrs. depending on use. Docs are known to be very tough shoes. I have noticed a certain decline in quality and less attention to detail and craftsmanship in my newer shoes. The non-England made shoe is a harder wear and lacks past finesse in the way the shoe conforms and fits to the foot. Even the 3989 is somehow an easy shoe to wear, much superior and easier than my last pair of steel toe Docs which completely refused to be tamed and wore hard on the feet even after 5 yrs of use. The 3989 has good looks, cleans readily with a brush without the need of shoe polish. I found that the eyelets are very tight on the shoelaces making them slide with difficulty thus is a difficult shoe to get in and out of as yet. I expect that they should loosen with time or maybe take them to a shoe shop to have them bored cleaned. This is a result of yet another cost cutter on eyelets. The old ones used to be made of metal maybe bronze and were good looking and covered the eye inside and out. The new ones are tiny and only show metal from the inside. Overall this a Doc shoe with a drop on quality and finesse, not as good as the old ones. It still has the distinctive good looks of classic Martens and is worth owning. But I do miss the quality of old Docs and wish the company will put more attention into their manufacturing process as they used to so as to bring back the top quality of such great shoes.

They're really well-cushioned & make me feel like I’m wearing comfortable walking shoes. The shoes aren't broken in yet, so the uppers feel uncomfortable when I put them on (but I don't notice this after a few minutes of walking...)

Great shoe after it is broken in - This is my fourth pair of DM. The shoes look great and after daily wear for about three weeks, they feel great. It did take some time to break in the leather but this seems to be normal with this kind of shoe. The color is great, but the leather does scratch easily. This can be reduced through polish and cleaning, but they are easily marred.

the 3898 saxon shoe is also great, it is black in color

If you got some edge to you, it works with suits. I live in Detroit and I bought the Doc Martens Wingtip as a work shoe to deal with Detroit winters. I wear suits and other corporate wear. It works well in slushy streets because of the thick sole. Very comfortable and people have complimented me. But if you don't have some edge to you, the redness and general clunkiness will likely turn u off. I'm a former punker so, for me and my personal style, it fit right in and I'm 41, man. But I'm giving it four instead of five stars because, well, I'm 41 and wear suits. When climate is right I'm going back to something less edgy. And frankly I'm less edgy.

So cute. So uncomfortable. Something inside near the side of your foot made them unwearable as soon as you put them on. Bummer! Returning sadly.

Way too large! And the leather feels very stiff and uncomfortable. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned a decline in quality. The shoe is quite hard to put on, at least initially. Perhaps when it's worn in it would feel softer... I ordered my usual size but my feet were swimming in these. Very cool looking though.

I love the look of these shoes, but, as other reviewers of Dr. Martens have noted, the ones manufactured outside of England show a noticeable drop-off in quality. The sole of my left shoe separated from the upper after only 5 1/2 months of light wear. I'm not talking about extreme sports here, just commuting to and from work by train. Zappos' customer service was awesome and replaced them; we'll see whether it was a one-off defect or a problem that replicated in the replacement pair.

I nearly returned these shoes because of their questionable quality. The partial footbed was peeled back due to not being glued down adequately. This was without ever being worn! An excess of glue was used on one of the shoes, leaving an unattractive residue that can't be taken off without stripping the leather. It looks like dried snot! But blemishes aside, they are still really cool looking shoes. Just plan on buying a super cushioned footbed to slip in there for comfort and support. There's more than enough room to accommodate it.

Leather is hard. The shoe takes some time to break in. Wear around the house a few times before attempting to walk long distances. Other than that it is a great looking shoe and once broken in comfortable.

These are outstanding looking shoes, classy with brogue. They are dressy but can also be worn with jeans. I loved the shoes the minute I unboxed them but boy are they uncomfortable. The leather, although of very high quality, is extremely stiff. I wore them around the house for a couple of weeks and no deal; they remained very unyielding and caused very sore blisters around the ankle, tendon area. My worst complaint, though, must be the weight. These shoes weigh a few pounds? I did not weigh them, but it is like walking with ankle weights. And I suffer from slight foot drop on my left, so that may not be representative of the usual buyer. But they are painful and very heavy. I cannot imagine having to walk a mile or more in these. They might just look great standing around and regretfully, their beautiful looks and construction did not persuade me to keep them.

5 stars for the upper. 1 star for the sole. I really liked these shoes, but after 1.5 years of wearing them the soles are worn smooth, and I cannot find anywhere to get a Dr Marten sole to replace them. The weld right at my arch blew out too. A cobbler near me will put a set of Vibrams on them, but I'm having a hard time justifying the $65 dollar cost. So comfort, fit, and look were fantastic, but I'm really disappointed in the sole. I have very flat feet, and these were very comfortable. If Dr. Marten had something in their "for life" line that I could wear to the office I'd be all over it.

These shoes get a lot of attention, but unfortunately my feet need some attention after wearing them! They\'re comfortable otherwise, but the opening is stiff, unpadded leather that digs into the skin above my feet. I wore them for a week straight to try and break them in but the leather just keeps digging!

How long owned: 5 minutes before deciding to return. Problems: eyelets: too tight, can't lace; leather: wrinkled upper, super squeaky when you walk; comfort: pinched where toes connect to foot when walking. I bought this shoe and almost immediately returned it. When I ordered online, it was the only size left in that style. When I opened the box, the left shoe had a defect in workmanship. I had planned to send them back in exchange for same pair, assuming this was an anomaly. The leather upper was wrinkled. Before I sent them back, I tried them on and walked around the house to make sure I liked to overall feel. As I walked, I felt the crease at my toes and foot was being pinched. Perhaps this is a result of new leather shoes? I couldn't lace the shoes at the top because the eyelets were just punched holes in the leather, no metal eyelet. The holes were punched entirely too small and I couldn't feed the shoestring through without stretching the hole with a leather tool. These are things that can be worked around, but the shoes were squeaky to the point of obnoxiousness. After reading other reviews about the same shoe, I decided that these are issues that are not an anomaly for the pair that was shipped to me. I didn't take the chance and decided to order a different style of Doc Martens. Too bad, these shoes are super cute! I planned to wear them to work most days. I cannot sacrifice comfort and silence for something that looks good, so I opted not to exchange for the same style.
