Absolutely superb quality and fit . Love this jacket . I am 5,10 and 180 pounds 35 waste and size large is perfect . Looks so smart I wear this coat dog walking , trekking and doing out . Needs a sweatshirt or layers under if lower than 10 degrees otherwise a T shirt is fine

For fitting purposes, I am 6'2", 215 lbs., 35" arms, with a 44" chest, 36" waist, and the large fits me perfectly, very close fitting. I love the royal-blue type color - it really pops out. My girlfriend likes the way it fits because it looks tailored.
I use it as my heavy soft-shell for biking and hiking in heavy terrain because it is tough and fends off branches and other growth. Good stretchy, tough material. Lightly insulated lining makes it warm for a soft-shell. With a thicker base layer, like the Rho AR, or the Phase SV Zip-neck, it goes down into the thirties (F), as long as I am moving, but I always carry an emergency hard-shell with it (the Theta LT) for warmth/weather protection purposes, although it does do very well in snow/light rain.
If it is really cold, I take along my ultra-compressible Atom LT to go under the Gamma MX. The Gamma is cut so that you can put layers on underneath. Quality of construction is awesome. Good zippers. Tough. Excellent hood with functional drawstrings. When I turn my head to the side, I find that I am NOT looking at fabric, but have a clear view - I really like this feature. And it fits well over my bicycle helmet.
I always have a backpack on, so I like the placement of the higher chest pockets, although I have to undo my chest strap to get at them most of the time, but, hey, where else are you going to put them?
Definitely, I recommend this soft-shell. It's a warmer, heavier soft-shell that is comfortable in lower temps, looks good, is comfortable to wear, and super durable.

The jacket is extremely high quality and feels premium from the off as well as being a very capable mountain jacket. Price a bit high for what it is hence the drop in point but it's a great piece.

Amazing jacket but please make the jacket have a longer torso. It is always popping out of my harness when I climb. Please please!

This is my 4th Gamma MX. It's pretty heavy duty with four ventilation pockets and light fleece bonded to the inside as a slight insulation. The dwr from factory is usually pretty good for light rain.
My only issue with it is the cuff design. I miss the old cuffs which are more like an atom or proton cuff. I honestly can't understand why these are designed this way. If it had the old cuffs I would give it 5 stars!
I use this for skiing as it fits over my ski helmet well and if I size up I can fit extra Insulation underneath. Of course if it's really windy and cold I'd recommend a hard shell.

I have the revised 2020 version (replacing 2006 version).
The cut is very good. Great articulation around the shoulder and arms. The new cuff design is great for ease of pulling on and off, this should be incorporated into other jackets. The new zipper with stops work, but, I've never had an issue with whatever it is trying to address. The hood design is great and you can cinch it down so that it looks like a normal hood when not wearing a helmet... older jackets had that bulbous mishroom head look.
This can be worn as a mid layer, but, the hood may get in the way and combined breathability will be an issue. But, the hood greatly increases the temperature range that you can use this.
Parts of the jacket are glued together and may not last over time... e.g. part of the cuff, the part around the waist. In my 2006 Gamma MX, the glued parts have all been worn and detatched, but the stitched areas are fine.
I have the 'Dynasty' colour and it appears more orange than red in real life. I have other Arc'teryx products in the same colour and there is a clear different, esp. in the face fabric.
Overall, this is a great jacket line and I'm sure I'll get 10+ years of use out this one as well.

This is the second Gamma MX Hoody I have bought, the first being when it was made with Gore Windstopper, I think its about 12 years old and out performs the latest version. The quality and fit have both been excellent, like all my Arc'teryx clothing. But the waterproofing on the current version is poor and incomparable to the older jacket. This is disappointing as I was expecting it to be, as good, if not better. One hour walking in light rain and I was wet through.

I bought this hoody brand new and I fell in love at first wear. Yes the sleeve cuffs were too tight but you fixed that. But you should have stopped... (I've bought two more used so I think I know a good product) You took away the users right breast pocket. (I held my glasses there) and the left shoulder pocket. Why? I won't even consider a jacket that doesn't have a breast pocket for my cell so when I found double - it was double joy! Don't fix what ain't broken.

the size is smaller than other arcteryx clothes!
I wear atom M, beta M, very suitable, but gamma mx M is too small

This is a nice jacket overall and I have followed Arcteryx closely for many years (with numerous pieces now). Somewhat unfortunately, the price tag shows 50 dollars less for the exact same model (not last year's) and in general this affected the overall purchase experience.
